  1. goal

GOAL - Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpoolpublished at 4 mins

    Mohamed Salah

Aston Villa haven't set themselves after that collision between their team-mates and Liverpool take the lead.

It is a delightfully worked move from the Reds, Trent Alexander-Arnold playing an outside-of-the-boot pass through to Andrew Robertson.

The Scotland international lays off a first time pass into the path of Mohamed Salah to slot into an open net from a few yards out.

Rested and revitalised, Salah might be dangerous in the second part of the season.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Liverpool

It looks like a right knee issue for Tyrone Mings, who charged into his own goalkeeper while trying to retreat.

Robin Olsen is OK but the England defender is in a lot of trouble.

Calum Chambers is out warming up.

  5. CLOSE!published at 2 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Liverpool

And Liverpool go to the other end and should score.

Darwin Nunez for some reason steps over a low Andrew Robertson cross and it drifts away from goal.

Why did the Uruguayan not have a shot???

Meanwhile, Tyrone Mings and Robin Olsen have crashed into each other and both Aston Villa players are hurt.

  6. CLOSE!published at 1 min

    Aston Villa 0-0 Liverpool

Nice, very nice from Aston Villa.

A sharp start from the hosts and Ollie Watkins latches onto a pass from Emi Buendia, but his strike on the half volley is gathered by Alisson.

Wolves got through the scares. Everton should have gone at least two up, but this is where Frank Lampard sees his team at the moment: languishing at the bottom.

It looks like Lopetegui has got his players at least playing for him and fighting. It was very scrappy in midfield, and then you've got Diego Costa firing them up.

It could have gone in Everton's favour but they had chances and messed them up.

  9. 'A really good result for us'published at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2022

    Everton 1-2 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves captain Ruben Neves, speaking to Match of the Day: "It was a great re-start for us. We worked a lot during the week and the set pieces are a massive part of the game. It was amazing and it meant a lot for us.

"It was a final for us and every game will be a final now. As a team we did very well and handled Everton's pressure. It's a really hard place to come and play but I think we deserved the win."

On the impact of new manager Julen Lopetegui: "It's a lot of impact. He is a really experienced manager. He has been working at big teams before and everyone is improving a lot.

"There's a lot of room to improve but it was a really good result for us."

  10. Postpublished at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2022

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-3 Fulham

    Crystal Palace

Palace captain Joachim Andersen: "It was a disappointing performance, losing 3-0 at home is never nice. We have a game soon so we have to get our heads up and win against Bournemouth. We need to forget this match, it's finished.

"Even though we didn't play well, I thought we were still in the game for a long time, but going 2-0 down made it difficult.

"We didn't do some of the basics right, we didn't compete in our duels. It's nothing to do with the break. We need to see what went wrong, make an evaluation and see what we can do better."

  11. 'I want fans to believe we can do anything'published at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2022

    FT: Leicester 0-3 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC MOTD: "Coming here knowing how difficult it was going to be, the start was really important to us. The first half an hour we were excellent. It's a trademark goal for Miggy [Miguel Almiron] and a really good team move.

"Leicester showed their quality in the second half and it was difficult to get the ball. I was keen for us to go on and control the game more. But I do think we minimised their threat. Credit to the team, it's another clean sheet and that's important."

On Almiron scoring nine league goals this season: "Confidence is so important and he has been lifted by the form of the players around him."

On Newcastle going second and where they might end up: "We can do anything. The season is still young enough for all possibilities to exist for us. I want the fans to believe we can do anything."

It's depressing as an Everton fan to watch Newcastle get taken over and rocket towards the Champions League, while we get a big money takeover and go from fighting for Europe to fighting relegation. A mess from top to bottom.

    Michael

Fantastic win for Wolves - encouraged by the substitutions. Glad Wolves fans stayed together and supported the team. You could feel the undermining home vibes at Goodison today - gave us an extra man!

Chelsea will be thinking "we can't let Newcastle finish ahead of us". Liverpool will be thinking they could finish lower because Newcastle are doing so well.

It's going to be an interesting finale to the season.

  14. 'Everton create once in a blue moon'published at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2022

I kind of feel sorry for Lamps because he knows what he wants from his team. But he needs to brush up and get a bit more stability in midfield - then they can start scoring more goals.

Once they do create - which is once in a blue moon - they don't put it in the goal. That's where you need a ruthless striker.

In the first half especially, Newcastle were scintillating. They were so exciting to watch and they created so many opportunities.

Bruno, in the middle, was pulling strings left, right and centre. Almiron, on the right, was brilliant - absolutely brilliant. Every time he picked the ball up he was driving forward, so positive.

Joelinton, again, was so creative and made things happen constantly. Chris Wood came in from the cold, got on the scoresheet and won a penalty.

It was Newcastle's all-round team play that was so impressive. All four defenders and the goalkeeper were fantastic. I wish I could pick five Newcastle players in my fantasy team because it would be the five at the back.

This is going to hurt the Everton players. They just need to know that they need to dig deep. The fans have stuck with them so far but they are getting frustrated now because they can see little glimmers of quality before they get into that final third.

Anthony Gordon is a really good players and he had a couple of very good chances, while Ben Godfrey had a chance. If they scored then Everton wouldn't be in this position.

Wolves just stayed strong and played some really good football, but just looked better in the final third.

I don't know what Frank [Lampard] was thinking. If there was a speech bubble above his head I think it would just be expletives.

[Do you worry for Lampard?] Not yet, another couple of defeats and then yes. Today he is going to be angry because his team did not put the game to bed with the chances they had. They had more chances than Wolves did.

As an Everton fan I'm already looking around for 3 teams who are bad enough to save us. Southampton probably fit the bill but I'm not sure there are 2 others. We are a shambles a long time in the making.

Re Ste's message at 16.45 regarding the weakness of Everton’s squad, it is even worse when you realise they have a nett spend of -£450m in the last 10 seasons.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I am happy because we won the game and we played very well.

"I'm angry only for the yellow card for Moises Caicedo because he can't play [in the next game]. But for my players in terms of quality of play I am very happy.

"The game was always in control, I think we could score more goals in the first part of the second half and close the game.

"But Southampton are a good team and every game in the Premier League you have to fight in every game.

"We have a lot of younger players and it is not easy for them to understand my demands, but we have older players - like Lallana, Gross and Veltman - who are very smart and can help the younger ones."

  19. We played really well all over the pitch - Mitrovicpublished at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2022

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-3 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic: "We are back and this is the best possible way to start the season again. We played against a good side but we showed that we are the better team today.

"Of course, they had two red cards, but even before the first we dominated and scored the goal. The red card made it easy but we played really well all over the pitch.

"The way we finished the first half we tried to put more pressure on them. We had to manage their intensity, then the second goal made it even more easy. I'll take one goal and two assists all day, but the most important thing was the three points.

"I really enjoyed it, even though I'm still having some trouble with my ankle. I'm still not fully fit but I'm getting there, and hopefully we can continue like this."

  20. 'Attitude and mentality not right'published at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2022

    Leicester 0-3 Newcastle

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers to BBC Sport: “The disappointing start was a big surprise. Especially with us at home when we haven't played for so long. The attitude and mentality were not right for some reason. They were 2-0 up within 10 minutes - that makes it very difficult, especially against a team playing well.

"I always felt it would take a few games but we should still start better. Sometimes it takes a while to get your rhythm but aggression and physicality should always be there – and it wasn’t."

On whether playing out from the back costing them a goal was an issue: "No. Sometimes it’ll happen. The penalty comes from a misplaced pass. We still have a chance to recover and we give away a cheap penalty. We've always played out from the back and will continue to do so.

"James Maddison was a huge miss. He's a huge catalyst for the team. We hope he can get back soon but we’re not sure when it’ll be.

"It's a recurrence of his knee coming back. We’ll wait to hear from the medical team how long that’s going to be. The quicker we get him back the better.

"Today wasn’t our day. Newcastle were much better than us."
