With Saka and Martinelli's pace, they will definitely threaten Brighton in behind.

  2. 'A year of real progress'published at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leeds

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to the BBC: "The desire was there, the quality was there but the finishing wasn't there. We had a number of opportunities that normally we take. We paid the price for that in terms of the results. We had the chances and on another day we score at least a couple of those. Then we became more desperate and it just didn't happen.

"We knew Leeds were going to come here and make it very difficult by stopping our flow. I thought we were really good today. It was a good battle and we defended really well which was important.

"2022 has been a great year, a year of real progress. The team has developed really well. We have had some great results and now we look forward to next year. We are just going about our business in the way that we see best - training our best and trying to improve the squad every day we train. There are big challenges ahead but we look forward to those."

On the transfer window: "Difficult to predict the transfer window. There's a lot of football to be played so let's see what happens."

On what has pleased him most this year: "The effort and commitment of the players has been pleasing. They give that every single day. Real praise to them for what they have given the club, I can't thank them highly enough for their efforts."

  3. 'We played really good'published at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

    FT: Man City 1-1 Everton

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to BBC Sport: "Great game. We played really good in the last three games and it makes me feel optimistic. Dropping points at home is always tough but I'm always trying to make our game good and we have continued to do it.

"I would say they had eight in the back. In that situation it's movement and attacking at the right moment. In general we did it. We didn't allow them transitions. They made a fantastic goal and when that happens you say congratulations but in general we did really well."

On Rico Lewis: "Every decision he takes and the moves he makes is good. He helped us do our job."

More from Guardiola to PLP on Erling Haaland and Ben Godfrey: "Well, I think it was the first kick of the game. After he played with a good energy. I was happy. I am always happy with my players."

On Aymeric Laporte's absence: "He had a problem with his back."

A couple of corners in quick succession for Brighton with the latest causing a bit of panic in the Arsenal defence as Aaron Ramsdale misses his punch but his team-mates are able to clear in the goal mouth.

Great football by Brighton as the ball is worked down the right before Tariq Lamptey scampers away. He cuts the ball back to Adam Lallana, who in turn finds Leandro Trossard but his shot is deflected behind for a corner.

  7. 'I have no doubt about my players'published at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

    FT: Bournemouth 0-2 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I don't have any doubt on players' commitment and quality. We knew against Fulham we did not play very well at all. So many aspects of our game were missing. And it was a one off. Of course we will win and lose games but today we played at the level we know we can. We managed to win the game and that is really positive for us.

"It wasn't comfortable at all. To win matches you need to be focused and concentrate, disciplined. All those aspects we had today and we had the quality. Today was a really good team performance from the first to the last minute.

"We have our goalkeeper coach look at the organisation of the opposition team and he had some ideas about how we could score goals. Today is good to score those goals because we have a quality with Michael on the ball and with Ebs [Eberechi Eze] who can shoot outside the box. So today it worked.

"I am not making decisions on one bad performance. I know that players I have been working with and the quality is there. It is to enforce some of the messages to compete at this level. I will never lose faith on the players and what we try to do. Hopefully it is the same for everyone."

On the transfer window: "I believe that we are, like always, a bit short on numbers. I would like to have more options and we notified the profile of players that we want. Now we try to make it happen. We know the January window is difficult but at the same time we may not have the resources. We have a good group who are working well and it is important for us to keep believing in those players and consistent in our emotions."

This is better from Brighton. They are seeing more of the ball as they look to try to control possession. They've not looked close to having a chance as yet but play is much more even now.

  9. 'That has to be ironing out in peoples' heads'published at 17:44 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

    FT: Fulham 2-1 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton manager Nathan Jones: "I thought we were excellent in discipline and shape in the first half and we could have gone in in front. To instead go in behind because of a set-piece was really disappointing and frustrating.

"We tweaked the shape and had moments to turn the screw in the second half.

"We didn’t do the basics well on two occasions and that is what let us down. They have to be ironed out on the training ground and in peoples’ heads.

"The overall performance was good today - we negated a fluent team - but we have to be better in those moments. We are gifting teams goals, they don’t have to do much to score, and that has to change.

On the possibility of doing business in the January transfer market: "We know exactly what we want to do. We have been looking where we want to strengthen and we have been looking since we have come in."

    Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

Levi Colwill - whose ability I will rave about until the end of time (future England captain imo) - has the ball for Brighton as the hosts try to slow the tempo down after a very hungry start by Arsenal. It is a bit more calmer now after the Gunners threatened to have this wrapped up very early.

  11. 'We got a special moment'published at 17:41 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

    FT: Man City 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard to PLP: "A lot of personality and work ethic. When you play a team of City's level you understand what's coming. If you open up against them they put you to bed so we had to have a certain style and the players kept to that and scored a goal. It's very hard but they did it.

"We had to not give them the space they wanted. I thought we were pretty good at that. We had some great blocks and defending too. When you stay in the game you have a bit of belief and you just need some moments. We got a special moment. You need that here at City.

"The quality of the finish was top draw. Demarai Gray wants more of that and I do. It got us the point. You ride your luck a tiny bit of course. We deserved more last week after the result. Sometimes football pays you back in different ways.

"Two physical lads! Erling Haaland, what a player, to see him in the flesh, he's a special player. I like that side of it with Ben Godfrey.

"We have two home games in the league and we need to go and get some points but we have to fight for every bit of it."

More from Lampard to BBC MOTD: "It's a big point for us. People are waiting. We have to defend ourselves by performances. The reaction to the result the other day was all negative.

"You have to wait for your day. We haven't achieved anything yet. It's a point at the champions but we need to go and get more points."

It's great football. Arsenal are playing some fantastic football through the pitch. They break with pace.

Technically they are excellent. Partey keeps everything together in midfield. He has been a really good player for Arsenal this year.

  13. 'Pele is a King of football'published at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leeds

    Newcastle United

Bruno Guimaraes speaking to Premier League Productions: "It is difficult. We would like to win this game at home. We needed to take the three points. The weather was difficult, the pitch, Leeds played well. But we need to keep positive, we played well. Another clean sheet but even with these things we are disappointed.

"We found problems to find the space to play well. Keep the ball well. We were a little bit anxious at times.

"For me it has been an amazing year. When I came here we were fighting against relegation and now we are fighting for the title, the Champions League, things like that. The club has changed. We still took a point. What a year. I think it was my best year.

"Arsenal [on Tuesday] will be an amazing game, we know they are doing very very well. They are surprising me. It will be a difficult game.

On his tribute to Pele: "For me and everyone in Brazil, Pele is a God of football. I want to do something for him. He did so much for us Brazilians. Everyone in brazil is sad about the news. He was my grandfather's favourite player. I'm sad to speak about him like this. When football exists, Pele exists, he is the King of football for me."

  17. 'We fell well below the standards set'published at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

    FT: Bournemouth 0-2 Crystal Palace

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is the first time I can stand here after a game and say the boys have fallen well below the standards we have set since I've taken them. The errors in the goals are unacceptable for this level. We have worked hard on set plays and we still concede two from them. More work needs to be done on them. And the overall performance was nowhere where we need to be.

"It will be rectified [conceding from set plays]. It won't go without work. It is hard to legislate for things you have worked on not happening. There are things in there that should not happen. Very disappointed with those two goals and more than that the afternoon. Palace slow it down, they are a counter-attacking team. You huff and puff but you need something to go your way to give it a spark. Too many sloppy errors. We take responsibility and go again.

"I didn't see it coming. It has been a bit of a tricky spell for the boys. Lack of training in some of them. It has not been a smooth ride in recent weeks with illness and injuries. But no excuses, we just fell well below the standards we have set.

"They'll be fine. They won't need galvanising. They known every game we go into the next one. Regardless of the result today we get ready for Man Utd. We know what our targets are and we will be ready for Tuesday."

Almost 2-0 as Oleksandr Zinchenko turns superbly inside the box to be in on goal but his shot is charged down by Robert Sanchez.

  20. 'A sign of how far we have come'published at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2022

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Leeds

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was one of those days for us. We had enough chances to win the game comfortably. It just wouldn't go in for us today. You have take one of those chances.

"It is a sign of how far we have come that they were timewasting and doing everything they could to take time out of the game. All that was missing was the final third."

On their improvement in 2022: "A lot has happened in the year. If you think back to where were and the strides made by the players., it has been a great year. We hope we continue the momentum we have got."
