  8. 'The money is going out of the country'published at 16:10 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

Football reporter, The Athletic, on BBC Radio 5 Live

The Premier League will tell you that money is trickling down to the EFL and it does as part of the solidarity agreements.for grassroots football. Those at that level will tell you that it's not enough.

If you look at the patterns over the summer, an awful lot of the Premier League spend goes out of the country. The big deals that we've seen, even with Antony joining Manchester United from Ajax, is money going out of the country.

There haven't been too many between Premier League and EFL clubs - we've seen a few, like Keane Lewis-Potter going from Hull to Brentford for big money, but in terms of consistently big money, the EFL has its bowl under the table waiting for crumbs.

The Premier League recovered very quickly from Covid but the EFL hasn't. Nor have Serie A or La Liga, simply because of the Premier League's broadcast revenues.

The less you depended on people coming through your turnstiles, the quicker you were going to recover. That's a huge factor for Premier League clubs because they were filthy rich even without people coming to watch games.

Clubs like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona will always have enormous financial clout because of their commercial revenues, status and how deep they go in the Champions League.

But Premier League clubs are out-muscling the clubs below them. There are players who will always see Real Madrid or Paris St-Germain as the pinnacle of their careers but there are mid-tier European clubs where Premier League clubs can poach their players because of their wages, playing in the Premier League and the exposure that can bring.

I'm not going to patronise European clubs by saying they can't keep up because results say they can.

Any English club that enters the Champions League is almost assured of reaching the last 16. You see English clubs dominating the group stages, even if they don't go on and win. It was Spanish and Italian-dominated during the 90s but English football is the force now.

The Premier League has never been more attractive. You see the talent drain that has left clubs like Ajax this summer - obviously most of their outgoing players have gone to Manchester United.

The Champions League used to be the pinnacle. Now the Premier League increasingly is, because of the riches on offer and players wanting to test themselves.

Richard: The Aubameyang deal is insane. Chelsea have lost the plot in desperation.

James: Why do clubs leave it late to sign players? If their target fails a medical then it would be difficult to find another player, agree a fee, contract and do the medical in such a short amount of time.

  10. What else to look out for?published at 16:05 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

  16. I have pushed a move myself - Antoniopublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Deadline day drama was one of the main talking points on the latest Footballer’s FootballPodcast, with Michail Antonio describing how he once managed to force a move.

The West Ham striker said: “I’m not going to say how I did it. It probably wasn’t the right thing to do, but it could the move done. No, actually, it was the right thing to do because I got what I wanted at the end of the day. People frowned upon it, but it’s worked out for the best.”

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson added: “When you’re a football player, it’s a short career at the end of the day. Sometimes, it’s just time to move on, time to take a different path. Ultimately, players have quite a bit of power.

“I’ve seen it happen time and time again. As a player, you can understand it, but you just don’t want it having a negative impact on what your current squad are going to do. As long as it’s not disrespectful to the players, I just leave players to their own devices.”
