  1. Unsettled players 'have to focus'published at 15:38 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

On the latest Footballer’s Football Podcast, Michail Antonio and Callum Wilson talked about what the dressing room vibe can be like after the transfer window closes.

Newcastle striker Wilson said: “It definitely changes, because you’re left with the people who are still there with the club. Players that didn’t get what they wanted have to get their head down and focus on this current team – trying to play their way into the team to get appearances.

“Everyone has to uplift the squad. You’ve got new players to welcome - you’re all in it together. It’s a team now. There’s no dividing, someone trying to leave. Some people need an arm around them, some people don’t.

“Sometimes you’ll see people trying to push things through in the last few days, not turning up, acting like they’re injured. At our club, I think we have a good group of lads. I can’t see anyone doing that.”

  3. Braithwaite leaving Barcelonapublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Barcelona

Denmark forward Martin Braithwaite has agreed to leave Barcelona by mutual consent.

The 31-year-old joined Barca from Leganes in 2020 and helped the club win the Copa del Rey in 2021.

However, he has found himself on the fringes at the Nou Camp, making just five appearances last term and was left out of their pre-season tour to the US.

Braithwaite still had nearly two years remaining on his contract but has agreed to leave Barca having scored 10 goals in 58 appearances for the club, with 36 of those appearances coming as a substitute.

He is now reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign with Barcelona's local rivals Espanyol although the likes of Everton, Aston Villa and Fulham have all been linked with the former Middlesbrough striker.

  4. 'Clubs take huge risks to stay in the Premier League'published at 15:30 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

The big driver this summer is undoubtedly the big increase in revenue that Premier League clubs can expect this year because of the new TV cycle, which means that international broadcast revenues have had a big uplift this time around.

If you're the team that finishes bottom of the Premier League, you might not win a game all season but you are guaranteed somewhere in the region of £100m.

If you win the Premier League, you might be looking at somewhere around £160m, which underlines the need to stay in this division.

Clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea were always expected to spend this summer - one on the back of a takeover, one because of a big rebuild.

The way aspiring clubs below the big six have spent this summer is indicative of where the Premier League is. West Ham have spent more than £100m, as have Newcastle United, with their Saudi money.

Nottingham Forest are proof that clubs are absolutely desperate to stay in the Premier League once they get there. The longer you stay in the Premier League, the more sustainable you are as a business.

There are huge risks involved in that. If Forest go back down again, they'll be in need of a financial reset this time next year.

The power of the Premier League is that everybody wants to be part of it, and that goes from clubs to players.

Gary: Dan James potentially leaving Leeds United, having played out of position for most of last season when we lack a striker and he has room to grow, and going to mid-tier or relegation rivals - the move makes no sense.

Paul, Leeds: Dan James can do better than Fulham. They will be in the Championship next season.

  7. 'I don't want to comment about Dan's situation'published at 15:26 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Leeds United

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch said there is "a lot going on" at the club today, adding that he is "not sure" when he was asked about Dan James's future.

Can't help but compare Aubameyang's move in my head to when Giroud ended up at Chelsea. Arsenal origins aside, likely to be someone slightly past their peak but who has a real knack for coming on at 70-80 minutes and scoring a winner.

    Rob

Spurs fan here. What I would give to see Aubameyang score the winning goal that keeps Arsenal out of the top 4 on the last day of the season... with Spurs comfortably in 3rd of course...

  9. 'Some clubs have spent like tomorrow will never come'published at 15:22 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Phil Buckingham
The Athletic football report on BBC Radio 5 Live

The total transfer spend in the Premier League 10 years ago was just under £500m. By the close of day tonight, there's every chance we'll be looking at £2bn, which is a phenomenal climb.

It's nothing new. Premier League spending power has been going up year on year. The Covid-19 pandemic was a bump in the road and 12 months ago the spend was around the £1.1bn mark, but these phenomenal numbers are testament to how Premier League clubs have come through Covid and the new deals in place.

Some clubs have gone out and spent like tomorrow will never come this summer. Clubs like Leicester have waited until the final day of the summer window to spend for the first time.

There are some rumours circulating that Leicester are trying to sign legendary Brazilian defender Marcelo.

It would be an amazing deal if it happened but am told the reports are wide of the mark.

Shame that. I could imagine him making a big impression in the Premier League, even though he is 34.

  17. 'Forest had to sign players'published at 15:06 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

The thing with Nottingham Forest is that 15 players left the City Ground last summer, so you had a large proportion of the side that got them promoted departed.

Steve Cooper had to go out and sign a number of players to get the squad level to where it was last year.

The problem they will have is getting them to be a cohesive unit and keeping those players happy if they're not getting regular football.

The other side of it is, Bournemouth have been criticised and Scott Parker wasn't happy with the lack of recruitment. He was public about that and it cost him his job.

  18. What else to look out for?published at 15:03 British Summer Time 1 September 2022
