  1. 'I tried to sign Vieira for Tottenham - and he was keen'published at 18:18 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

Former Tottenham, West Ham and Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live about signing players from rivals: "I nearly signed Patrick Vieira for Tottenham. He would have been at Manchester City or Juventus, I can't remember. But I met him at his house. He was a great guy, a really impressive man and what a player he was.

"He was [keen]. He was quite fearless, really. Somebody at Tottenham said 'oh we can't bring him here, the crowd won't like it'. I said 'listen, if he comes here and plays like we know he can, what courage he has got. He was a true legend at Arsenal and he's willing to come and play here at Tottenham, it shows you what he is made of'.

"That would have been an incredible signing."

  2. 'When you bring these players in they have normally not been playing'published at 18:14 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

More from former Tottenham, West Ham and Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp on BBC Radio 5 Live: "When I went back to Portsmouth [in the January 2006 transfer window] it was a case of needing to get five or six players in.

"I went to Tottenham and Daniel Levy did one of his special buy two get one free deals with us, so we ended up taking three players from Tottenham who all did great for me.

"I took a little Argentinian lad Andrés D'Alessandro, on loan from Wolfsburg, who was a genius for me. But when you bring these players in they have normally not been playing.

"The three Tottenham lads had been in the reserves. First game we played Birmingham away and they all got cramp after about 50 minutes. They weren't match fit because they had not been playing any football.

"So it is a difficult time, but eventually they managed to settle in and we went on an incredible run for the last 10 games and we stayed up. I think we got 21 points in the last 10 games to stay up."

  3. 'It will be interesting if Arsenal can hit a figure for Luiz'published at 18:10 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport reporter

One to keep a eye on is Douglas Luiz. He was at Manchester City, he went to Aston Villa, who have been adamant in saying he is going nowhere, but the rumours about him leaving persist.

Arsenal are looking at him. It will be interesting if arsenal can hit a figure that Villa say 'you know what, we will cash in'.

Former Tottenham, West Ham and Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live about the the manager's experience on transfer deadline day: "Everyone is looking at their team - they are looking to win something, get in the top group, not get relegated. They are thinking 'if only we could get one more player'.

"The chairman is getting fed up hearing that as you get one then ask for another one.

"You always feel you are going to get left behind.

"Look at Nottingham Forest signing 20 players - it's amazing really. They did fantastic last year to get up [to the Premier League] and they are looking determined to stay up. It is going to be quite interesting."

Surely Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa should be looking for a proven goal scorer like Aubameyang!! Without goals Aston Villa will never get the benefits of a great midfield and the creativity available.

    Chris

12 months ago Villa spent the summer trying to pry away top players for other teams (Smith-Rowe and Ward-Prowse). Failed to do so, and a year on settling for cast offs from Wolves and Southampton. The come down in ambition is a bit worrying.

As a NUFC fan, sad to see Dubravka go as he was arguably our best player in season's past. Leaving our GK quality a bit short if something happens to Pope!

  12. De Bolle joins Hamilton Academical on loanpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Newcastle United

Eddie Howe was quick to promote 19-year-old creative midfielder Lucas De Bolle to the first-team set-up when he arrived at the club.

The product of the same esteemed Wallsend Boys Club, external, which helped to nurture the likes of Alan Shearer and Michael Carrick, has been an unused substitute in the Premier League.

After signing a new two-year-deal at Newcastle he will now get the chance to prove his worth in the Scottish Championship during a season-long loan with Hamilton Academical.

One to keep an eye on maybe.

  13. 'Quite a few players might try to get their contracts cancelled'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport reporter

I have a feeling quite a few players might try and get their contracts cancelled. If they manage to do that before the transfer deadline in the country they are playing then they are allowed to sign for other clubs outside the window.

[Barcelona's Netherlands forward] Memphis Depay is one that keeps coming up. If he can get his contract cancelled at Barcelona by the time the Spanish window closes, which is roughly the same time as in England, he will be able to sign for another club outside of the window.

Looks like another bumper deadline day for Palace, I understand we've already signed a new tea lady, subject to a medical, and that we are close to poaching two car park attendants from one of our London Premier League rivals.

  15. 'A special moment joining Man Utd'published at 17:36 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Manchester United

Manchester United have paid a £2m loan fee for Martin Dubravka with a £6m obligation to buy if he starts a certain number of Premier League games.

“To be joining Manchester United is a special moment in my career and I can’t wait to get started, and help the group achieve its ambitions," he said.

“I am joining an excellent group of goalkeepers with lots of experience in the Premier League, and I know that we will push and support each other to keep our standards at the highest levels. The chance to work with David De Gea, alongside Tom Heaton, is one that I am relishing.

“I’d like to sincerely thank everyone at Newcastle United, and especially the fans, for many great experiences over the past four and a half years. I enjoyed every minute of my time there and made amazing memories to look back on."

Why the negativity about the players Forest have bought? We have been saving for 23 years! Why get to the Prem and not have a go? All we heard pre-season was "it's good to have Forest back" now it is "how dare they try to compete who do they think they are". Relax and enjoy the ride.

    Adrian

Re: Joe & Daft Penguin @ 16:58, Forest have had to sign so many players because they've sold/released/returned to parent club about 20 players themselves from their squad from last season. It seems obscene on the face of it, and they probably have gone a bit OTT, but there is an element of necessity if you lose an entire matchday squad's worth of players.

  18. 'Unprecedented to bring in 20 players'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport reporter

It is fairly unprecedented for any promoted football club to bring in 20 players [as Nottingham Forest have done]. I was at the Etihad last night, where Nottingham Forest got absolutely hammered 6-0 by Manchester City.

That's not representative of where they are. They have got games coming up in September that are more in line with their aims. They will have to play some of these 20 players.
