  1. 'United are light years behind City and Liverpool'published at 20:46 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

Manchester United missed a trick, going back to last season, by appointing Ralf Rangnick as interim manager.

They are light years behind Manchester City and Liverpool in terms of getting their business done early.

Had they had Ten Hag in last season, he could have done his due diligence then, assessed the squad and hit the ground running at the start of this summer's transfer window when it opened.

As it is, I feel they've always been behind the 8-ball, playing catch-up. Yes, they've signed £82m of talent in Antony - but if you compare that to City and Liverpool, who have a process and a structure that they stick to rigidly, United's recruitment is some way off.

  2. Arthur says bye to Juventuspublished at 20:43 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

Brazil midfielder Arthur Melo has just tweeted a sort of farewell video to Juventus.

So that Liverpool move must be close now.

A third signing for Salford City today.

They have signed Birmingham midfielder Odin Bailey, 22, for an undisclosed fee.

Earlier they signed Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Jacob Chapman on loan until January and Manchester United midfielder Ethan Galbraith on a season-long deal.

  4. Tranmere land second Premier League loan playerpublished at 20:39 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

Tranmere Rovers have signed Southampton defender Dynel Simeu on a season-long loan deal.

They earlier signed Liverpool forward Paul Glatzel on a similar deal.

Simeu, 20, joined Saints from Chelsea a year ago and had a loan spell in League Two with Carlisle last season.

  5. Hearts sign Wigan playerpublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

A little bit of Scottish transfer news for you...

Hearts have signed Wigan striker Stephen Humphrys, 24, on loan for the rest of the season.

  6. Aubameyang having Chelsea medical?published at 20:33 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

  8. 'Agents can have a destabilising effect'published at 20:29 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

With the deadline at 11 o'clock, most of the deals will be done by now. They do take a while - it can be quite a laborious process.

Sometimes you get agents who are trying to manoeuvre a player out of a club. It can have a destabilising effect if you're not strong, so it gives managers a dilemma.

  9. 'Will United reinvest their trust in Ronaldo?'published at 20:27 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

I've heard some people saying Antony is the missing piece in the jigsaw for Manchester United and will get 20 goals in a season.

He never has done. He's a brilliant prospect from Brazil - where they still don't trust him at international level - but he's not going to get you 20 goals a season.

Will United then reinvest their trust in Ronaldo? He's brilliant at headers and might not be as quick as he was - we've seen that this season.

He needs service. Antony will provide that. I don't accept the criticism that Martinez is too small. You need a more authoritative figure alongside him. Varane might provide that.

We haven't seen anything like Erik ten Hag's best as their manager yet and there are one or two questions around their signings.

Mick: As a Manchester United fan, we've had a fair few 'nearly' transfers over the years but Paul Gascoigne came very close. That would have been brilliant. Honourable mentions for Alan Shearer and Ronaldinho too.

Sean: Sheff Wed missing out on Eric Cantona after having him on trial for a week before he signed for Leeds.

  13. Oxford get their manpublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

The one you've all been waiting for...

Oxford United have signed Lazio right-back Djavan Anderson on a one-year deal - subject to a work permit.

The 27-year-old, who spent last season on loan with PEC Zwolle, was on the bench for Lazio last night.

The Dutch player said: "I hope that [paperwork] goes through as quickly as possible. I haven’t played as many games as I wanted to in the last few years and I just want to get started now.

"The manager spoke with such passion about Oxford and the plans for the club and I know the style he likes to play which I think will suit how I like to play the game."

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Chelsea are close to completing a loan deal for Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria.

The 25-year-old Switzerland international would boost Chelsea's midfield options after Ajax were unwilling to sell Edson Alvarez.

Current midfielders N'Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are both injured while Mateo Kovacic is working his way back from injury.

Zakaria joined Juve in January from Borussia Monchengladbach and has made 15 appearances, including two this season.

  17. Baggies sign Kellypublished at 20:09 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

Championship side West Brom have signed former Crystal Palace defender Martin Kelly, 32, on a free transfer.

“The size of the club helped convince me to come here and sign. I believe this club should be in the Premier League," he said.

  18. 'Willian has to hit the ground running'published at 20:06 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

Willian to Fulham took me back. I've been covering some of the Copa Libertadores games and I've seen him over there. He's just not the same - not performing to the same level.

It was a bit of a swansong going back to his boyhood club and it didn't quite work out. His family have been threatened.

You could see how reliant the club were on him. It wasn't as physical or as fast-paced as the Premier League.

Willian has to hit the ground running. It's important, when you're a team like Fulham, to get wins and have attacking players who are at their peak.

That's going to be a really interesting addition because it really did surprise me.

Aston Villa sign Leander Dendoncker from Wolves for £13m

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa have signed Wolves midfielder Leander Dendoncker for £13m.

The Belgian, 27, was surplus to Wolves' requirements and Villa manager Steven Gerrard was keen to strengthen his squad after a poor start to the season.

The move is unrelated to the future of Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz, who is a target for Arsenal.
