  1. Dawson set for Hammers staypublished at 19:15 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport reporter

Craig Dawson looks set to stay at West Ham despite significant interest in the veteran centre-half.

Wolves and Aston Villa were understood to be amongst the clubs keen on signing Dawson, who was outstanding for the Hammers last term.

However, West Ham would only allow Dawson to leave if David Moyes was able to secure a replacement.

    That has not happened.

The club were hopeful of signing Jan Bednarek from Southampton but he has opted to join Villa instead.

Unless the situation changes unexpectedly before the deadline, Dawson will remain at the London Stadium for the final year of his contract.

Who was your team's biggest 'nearly' signing?

As a Huddersfield fan, we 'nearly' signed Adama Traore before he joined Wolves, but Robert Lewandowski almost joining Blackburn (but for a volcano eruption) will take some topping.

Liverpool nearly signed Cristiano Ronaldo. Phil Thompson went to see him play for Sporting Lisbon, said 'we've got to get this kid', and they were being given a contract in their hands to sign him for about £4.5m.

Gerard Houllier gave it the old 'let's wait two weeks'. United, in the meantime, went and played Sporting Lisbon in a friendly and Ronaldo ran rings around every single player.

On the plane on the way over, apparently, Roy Keane led a delegation of players to Fergie and went, 'sign him when you get off the plane' - and they did.

Houllier and Thompson were sitting in the boardroom eating when the deal came up on Sky Sports. It's in Thompson's autobiography. Those moments are massive.

  8. '£90m Antony could turn out to be risky purchase'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Manchester United

Kim Cramer Larsson,, external Technical Analyst at Saxo Markets, told BBC Sport:"The transfer window is actually very similar to the stock market. A common theme in the stock market is 'interest'. If more people are buying a particular stock, that increases its demand and therefore gauges more interest. This simple breakdown of how shares are bought is a tactic that football clubs and footballers' agents have often tried to use to increase the value of their clients in order to get a better deal for the selling club.

"In more recent times and with news moving so quickly on the internet, there have been examples where the markets have been moved by stakeholder commentary. For example, most recently Tesla owner Elon Musk's tweeting about Manchester United. On Transfer Deadline Day, you can imagine those involved would try to use similar tactics to boost a player's credentials to grab the attention of other potential suitors.

“If agents of wantaway players from clubs in smaller leagues can drop a hint that one of the big cash rich English clubs, this can raise the price of a player significantly. The top six clubs in England are linked with 75-100 players each summer transfer window, but they likely only speak to a fraction of this. Take Manchester United's purchase of Antony. Like with the stock market, if a company, or player in this case, becomes so in demand, the fanfare around them can push a player's price up by millions. In Antony's case, this was close to £90m - which could turn out to be a risky purchase if his ability fails to match his performance levels."

Eddie: Douglas Luiz knows what to do. Take the train down to London and wait by the gates of London Colney to force through a move.

Chris: Feel like Gerrard is on borrowed time at Villa. He has a worse win percentage than Gary Neville at Valencia!

If he doesn’t get anything from the next two games then it is surely the sack for him. No wonder he is holding on to Luiz - don’t think you’ll see a £40m move.

  19. 'Liverpool need midfield reinforcements'published at 18:24 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

More from Harry Redknapp on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Liverpool are short in midfield. They are missing a bit of quality in there. They have Thiago, who is a fantastic player, but they are a little bit short in there.

  20. 'Arthur will strengthen the Liverpool team'published at 18:21 British Summer Time 1 September 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport reporter

It looks like Arthur Melo - the Brazilian from Juventus - is going to strengthen the Liverpool midfield. Liverpool obviously took a big decision to let Sadio Mane go during the summer. It almost feels as if they are still trying to make up for that in some way.

So it looks like Arthur is going to come in and I think he will strengthen Jurgen Klopp's team.
