Scotland are back at Hampden on Saturday to face Republic of Ireland, where victory will be enough to win the group if Ukraine fail to beat Armenia earlier in the day.

Should Ukraine win, it definitely goes down to the final fixtures on Tuesday. That's when Scotland face the Ukrainians in Krakow.

Scotland now know that draws in their two remaining matches will be enough for top spot. Bring it on.

On super-subs Dykes & Fraser: "Both of them had the hump with the head coach that they didn't start the game. That's what you want, a hungry group.

"I said afterwards that the work they do in the preparation is important. We scored from two corners so it means Austin [MacPhee] is doing his work and the boys are listening to what the movements should be.

"It's always nice for players to go on and prove the coach right. But I'm not taking credit for it, it's all down to the players."

On the play-off defeat to Ukraine in the summer: "I think everyone forgets just how disappointed the players were. They wanted to show everybody what they were about tonight.

On facing Ireland on Saturday: "Without being disrespectful, I'd rather play San Marino. It's just another game, obviously the Irish have a clear week of preparation, so it's important we assess what we did tonight well and look at the system they play because it's a different system.

"Hopefully we can have a similar performance and similar result.

"We've responded tonight but we have to respond again on Saturday. We want to be in a position going to Poland to play Ukraine [next Tuesday] in the last game where we have a realistic chance of being top of the section."

“Nah, that's a bit much," he says.

"It was good and we're really pleased. Now we have to reset and get ready to go again on Saturday."

Scotland manager Steve Clarke says: "The performance was really good, congratulations to the players.

"It was an open game, not many chances, then we got on top, and the first goal was always going to be crucial and thankfully we got that.

"It took us longer than we thought to get goal, we missed a few chances and then John does what he does well. From there you can see there's a good belief and confidence.

"It was nice for two subs to come off the bench and make the scoreline better.

"When you're watching from the side, you know you're creating chances, you're waiting - actually expecting - one of them to go in because you're creating good chances. You trust the players to get the goal and that's what happened."

"We did a lot of work in the short period we had, a lot of it very boring work in the lecture room, and they obviously took it all on board. They were excellent.

Scotland super-sub Lyndon Dykes is quite rightly revelling in his two-goal heroics.

"I was disappointed not to be playing, but I came on and changed the game," he tells Premier Sports.

"For Scotland, my goal record has been good and I'm going to keep on getting in the right positions and keep on scoring.

"It's a great start to this run of three matches. It will give us massive confidence and we've got one to give to Ireland as well because last time wasn't up to standard."
