    FT: Scotland 3-0 Ukraine

Scotland are back at Hampden on Saturday to face Republic of Ireland, where victory will be enough to win the group if Ukraine fail to beat Armenia earlier in the day.

Should Ukraine win, it definitely goes down to the final fixtures on Tuesday. That's when Scotland face the Ukrainians in Krakow.

Scotland now know that draws in their two remaining matches will be enough for top spot. Bring it on.

Thanks for your company this evening. Cheerio.

  2. 'Dykes & Fraser had the hump with me'published at 22:48 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Ukraine

More from Scotland manager Steve Clarke...

On super-subs Dykes & Fraser: "Both of them had the hump with the head coach that they didn't start the game. That's what you want, a hungry group.

"I said afterwards that the work they do in the preparation is important. We scored from two corners so it means Austin [MacPhee] is doing his work and the boys are listening to what the movements should be.

"It's always nice for players to go on and prove the coach right. But I'm not taking credit for it, it's all down to the players."

On the play-off defeat to Ukraine in the summer: "I think everyone forgets just how disappointed the players were. They wanted to show everybody what they were about tonight.

On facing Ireland on Saturday: "Without being disrespectful, I'd rather play San Marino. It's just another game, obviously the Irish have a clear week of preparation, so it's important we assess what we did tonight well and look at the system they play because it's a different system.

"Hopefully we can have a similar performance and similar result.

"We've responded tonight but we have to respond again on Saturday. We want to be in a position going to Poland to play Ukraine [next Tuesday] in the last game where we have a realistic chance of being top of the section."

  4. Scotland's best display under Clarke?published at 22:40 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Ukraine

So, is this Scotland's most complete performance in the near three-and-a-half year tenure of Steve Clarke?

    Let's ask the man himself.

“Nah, that's a bit much," he says.

"It was good and we're really pleased. Now we have to reset and get ready to go again on Saturday."

  5. Scotland's perseverance & quality pleases Clarkepublished at 22:36 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Ukraine

Scotland manager Steve Clarke says: "The performance was really good, congratulations to the players.

"It was an open game, not many chances, then we got on top, and the first goal was always going to be crucial and thankfully we got that.

"It took us longer than we thought to get goal, we missed a few chances and then John does what he does well. From there you can see there's a good belief and confidence.

"It was nice for two subs to come off the bench and make the scoreline better.

"When you're watching from the side, you know you're creating chances, you're waiting - actually expecting - one of them to go in because you're creating good chances. You trust the players to get the goal and that's what happened."

After not scoring or assisting in his first 14 Scotland appearances under Gordon Strachan, Malky Mackay and Alex McLeish, John McGinn has been involved in 20 goals in 35 matches under Steve Clarke (14 goals, 6 assists), 12 more than any other player in that time.

  11. 'Boring work' reaps rewards for Clarkepublished at 22:15 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Ukraine

Scotland manager Steve Clarke, as calm and undemonstrative as ever, tells Premier Sports: "I'm pleased for the players. They suffered in the summer more than anybody.

"We did a lot of work in the short period we had, a lot of it very boring work in the lecture room, and they obviously took it all on board. They were excellent.

"Sometimes you need to respond in football and it's nice that we've responded in this way."

The pressure was on in this match, after losing two of the last three, just as much as it ever has been before under Steve Clarke. This performance was as good as I have seen. Ukraine did under perform but Scotland could have won this easily by five, perhaps even more.

  13. 'I changed the game' - Dykespublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Ukraine

Scotland super-sub Lyndon Dykes is quite rightly revelling in his two-goal heroics.

"I was disappointed not to be playing, but I came on and changed the game," he tells Premier Sports.

"For Scotland, my goal record has been good and I'm going to keep on getting in the right positions and keep on scoring.

"It's a great start to this run of three matches. It will give us massive confidence and we've got one to give to Ireland as well because last time wasn't up to standard."

Hickey was exceptional when he came on, he looked in control. Let this be the end of McTominay playing at the back because he was absolutely class in the middle of the park. He was physical, he was a leader, he looked about 12ft tall!

  16. 'We owed a performance like that' - McGinnpublished at 22:00 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Ukraine

Scotland's goalscoring captain John McGinn tells Premier Sports: "We needed that. The summer hurt us badly.

"Tonight we got back to doing what we do well, being horrible to play against and showing desire.

"We know we're a good team and we owed the supporters, the manager and most of all ourselves a performance like that."

You can only play like that if you've got the right players and the right system in place. It was a big call to go with four at the back and the 4-2-3-1 often looked more like a 4-4-2, which is very brave at this level. Steve Clarke deserves a lot of credit.
