Despite that dominance, there is another warning for Chelsea.

They've got to be careful, otherwise they could end up going into the break level.

Young Danish midfielder Maurits Kjaergaard saunters into the Chelsea box and is picked out on the left.

However he drags a tame shot wide.

Think the keeper deserves plenty of credit there, Jared!

Philipp Kohn has stopped this being a mauling.

Chelsea have enjoyed over 70% of possession and been very lively.

Jared: Surely Aubameyang, what better chance does he need than that? How do you even miss from such!!!?

That is a tame, tame header from Kai Havertz. He just cushions it back to the goalkeeper who can't believe his luck that it just falls back into his chest. For the second time, after the Aubameyang chance, it's a really poor finish from Chelsea.

Another one where we say it should have been two.

Kai Havertz is the culprit this time, heading straight at the home keeper from about eight yards out.

Philipp Kohn does his bit to keep the entertainment levels high by juggling the ball before gathering at the second attempt.

Wait! There's a warning at the other end for Chelsea. Salzburg remind the visitors that they are dangerous on the break and Noah Okafor forces a save out of Kepa.

That would have been as good a team goal, under pressure in possession as you would have seen. For some reason, Aubameyang just wanted a second long before he pulled the trigger and allowed the goalkeeper to make a pretty good save at his feet. That one was his bread and butter.

And then... they pounce. The patient approach at the back finally lead to another opening, this time down the left.

Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic are heavily involved with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suddenly appearing in space on the right.

Play him in! That's what happens as Kai Havertz spots his team-mate but home keeper Philipp Kohn spreads himself well to deny the Blues striker with his outstretched left leg.

Potter-ball is certainly easy on the eye.

Slick passing from side-to-side at the back, everything neat and precise.

Such a good save from Kohn who pushed it away from danger to deny Havertz get what he thought was a tap in.

Almost a second! A bit of a scramble in the Salzburg box following a corner from Conor Gallagher.

Home keeper Philipp Kohn keeps out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's header and somehow his defence help stop Kai Havertz from turning in.

Well that is a sensational finish by Kovacic at the edge of the penalty area. He hits it on the half volley, it was good play all round by Chelsea.

That is an unbelievable reaction from Kovacic to open his foot up and side foot it right into the top corner. The goalkeeper, pretty much on his knees can only watch it go in. What a wonderful finish to put Chelsea ahead.

    Mateo Kovacic

    Finish!

Chelsea are ahead thanks to a moment of instinctive brilliance from Mateo Kovacic.

Salzburg valiantly try to clear their lines with Kai Havertz creating a nuisance, but a toe-out goes as far as Kovacic.

The Croatia midfielder, almost nonchalantly, opens his left boot and clips into the far corner.

Chelsea need to be better in possession, they are giving the ball away too easily. They are looking to manipulate space but when they get the ball to their attacking players they are not holding on to the ball well enough.
