Ajax always somehow manage to build top sides. They do well, they have to sell all their star players and they rebuild again and come again. It seems as though they're building another top side. They'll be a tough opposition for Liverpool and hopefully they do one over on them tonight!

  3. 'We come here in a good mood'published at 19:48 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    Ajax v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport before kick-off in Amsterdam: "I don't understand how you can go for a point, you can only get a point by trying to win.

"Ajax is a great club and it's in their DNA to be an attacking team. But that creates spaces for us and hopefully we can use that."

On Darwin Nunez returning, along with Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold: "It is positive, they are the changes we can make and they make sense. The three of them should be fresh.

"The others have played a little more but they have had time to recover.

"We come here in a good mood. It will be an outstanding atmosphere and we have to play our part.

"What will our formation be? You have to work that out yourselves."

Spurs have won six of their seven home matches against Portuguese opposition. Their one loss came against Benfica in the Europa League in March 2014.

They have only played Sporting once - earlier in this year's group stages, losing 2-0 to two injury-time goals in Portugal.

Liverpool's three wins after their 4-1 defeat by Napoli mean that the Reds need only a point from their last two matches to reach the knockout stages. Gracenote's Euro Club Index gives Liverpool 99% chance to progress to the last 16.

The Reds are likely to finish as group runners-up though as they have only 21% chance of winning Group A and most of that relies on Napoli dropping points against Rangers.

It might be a good job for Liverpool that a point will get the job done tonight, given their surprisingly poor away record this season.

The Reds have won just one game on the road in all competitions and have lost at Manchester United, Arsenal, Napoli and Nottingham Forest.

This is the worst Liverpool have been on their travels under Jurgen Klopp, but the German is unconcerned about their form away from Anfield so far.

"It is nothing in my mind at the moment," he said.

"I prepare the team for a very important football game and, sorry, but I am not prepared for this question in this moment. I had other things to do in the last few days."

Inter Milan have beaten Viktoria Plzen 4-0, which means they join Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16.

Plzen finish bottom of the group.

Antonio Conte cut a sombre figure after the loss against Newcastle United on Sunday. The Italian’s lack of confidence in the club’s signings means we are suddenly beginning to look at the impact injuries will have, as the core group are beginning to feel the burn.

Cristian Romero has apparently felt some fatigue in his calf and Conte said that he had not been minded to force the player. This meant the return of Davinson Sanchez, who has been desperately poor.

There are multiple consequences of having to inject back-up players into a side, and against Newcastle, Spurs looked fragmented.

One cannot help but feel that Dier, Sanchez, Davies, Doherty, Emerson, and Sessegnon all being in the same starting 11 is ruthlessly handicapping Conte.

Thinking with one’s head rather than one’s heart, would any of that group of six walk into any of Europe’s top sides?

Losing can become a habit very quickly in football, and of course, we’ve been here before. Is Daniel Levy still happy with his summer business?

    Andros Townsend
Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Conte has gone back to his tried and trusted, he's tried to get Lucas Moura a run of games. He's obviously been out injured for a long period so I think this is the perfect opportunity at home against Sporting Lisbon to try and get some minutes in his legs and see if he can contribute moving forward in the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku has hammered in Inter Milan's fourth on his return from two months out injured.

    They lead Viktoria Plzen 4-0.

Until Plzen score four in three minutes, Inter are through and Barca are through... to the Europa League.

Despite losing at Sporting, Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to reach the Champions League knockout stages from Group D.

Spurs have an 85% chance of playing in the last 16 according to Gracenote's Euro Club Index. All four Group D teams can still progress so a victory for Spurs tonight is crucial to avoid a nerve-wracking final match.

Ben Davies says there is more to come from Tottenham, adding that the squad all know recent performances could have been better.

The defender said: "It’s probably the most important game we’ve had in the group. It’s important to try to finish the job tomorrow and put us in the position where we can go to Marseille without needing a result.

"We know we’re up against a very good team. They are going to cause us some difficulties but we have to be ready for it. We know we have to be at our best.

"We’ve given ourselves every chance of going through this group. We have two big games left and hopefully we can secure qualification tomorrow.

"As a team, we are growing. We really believe that we could have played a lot better in the other games so far. There is definitely more to come for us.

"We’re a team working hard every day and our biggest aim is to get better and better. Hopefully, that can continue in this competition."

  17. 'Spurs should be qualifying comfortably'published at 19:24 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    Spurs v Sporting (20:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Former Aston Villa striker on 5 Live's Monday Night Club

When they lost the away game, some of Conte’s words - ‘Sporting have been a Champions League team for so many years, we haven’t’ - you’re thinking: 'Blimey.

Spurs should be getting out of this Champions League group comfortably with the players they have at their disposal. That is a bit of a cop out from Conte.

It’s OK when you’re winning and you’re winning ugly. But as soon as there are a couple of poor results, everyone is now looking at performances and analysing each game this season and thinking there hasn’t been one standout performance - and that is Conte’s problem.

Marcus Edwards was likened to Lionel Messi aged 17, but just three years later he was let go by Tottenham - the club he had been on the books of since he was eight years old.

But the attacking midfielder, now 23, used that disappointment to his advantage and is now shining for Spurs' Champions League opponents tonight - Sporting Lisbon.

Edwards showed what his boyhood club has missed out on with a superb display against them in Portugal last month in which he came so close to scoring a superb solo goal, and will be determined to do it again on his return to north London.

  19. Liverpool just need a pointpublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 26 October 2022

    Ajax v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

Liverpool just need a point in Amsterdam to seal their place in the knockout stage. They probably have to win to maintain their hopes of top spot.

The Reds currently trail leaders Napoli - who host Rangers - by three points.

Ajax realistically need to win by more than one goal to keep their hopes alive as that would give them a head-to-head edge on the Reds if they finish level on points.

Rangers' hopes of third spot and the Europa League would be over if Ajax better their result.
