    Arsenal 0-0 Zurich

This is another big night for Eddie Nketiah. He's very much played second fiddle to Gabriel Jesus this season, but he has a chance this evening to turn up the competitive heat on his rival for the number nine slot.

There's some ambition on show from the Swiss side. They win a corner but Gabriel gets his head to the delivery first to nod away.

Arsenal yet to get a grip on this.

    This is lively!

West Ham attack and Divin Mubama is close to connecting with a low ball across goal before Manuel Lanzini's low shot is saved.

West Ham almost get themselves in a mess at the back.

Vladimir Coufal's poor touch back to Alphonse Areola prompts Andrea Compagno to nip in but the Hammers defender recovers to tackle.

Oof. That's a naughty one. A home player slides in nastily on Flynn Downes in the FCSB half. Thankfully, Downes is OK after.

The free-kick is whipped into the middle but headed away.

  10. Hammers in Romaniapublished at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2022

FCSB v West Ham (20:00 GMT)

West Ham have a bit of recent European history in Romania.

They visited in successive seasons, in 2015-16 and 2016-17. Astra Giurgiu were 2-1 winners in the Uefa Europa League third qualifying round in August 2015. The same side bagged a 1-1 draw on the way to a 2-1 aggregate victory in the play-off round of the same competition a year later.

Prior to that, you can go back almost exactly 23 years ago to when the Hammers visited Bucharest for a European game. They were found wanting too.

Then managed by Harry Redknapp, West Ham were beaten 2-0 at Steaua Bucharest, with Laurentiu Rosu and Sabin Ilie getting the goals. A 0-0 at Upton Park meant the Irons were knocked out of the then Uefa Cup at the second-round stage.

Even further back, John Lyall's Hammers suffered a 1-0 defeat at Politehnica Timișoara in the European Cup Winners' Cup second round second leg. A 4-0 home win set the record straight, though.

West Ham had to come from behind to beat FCSB in the return game in London back in early September.

The Hammers dominated that game but managed to conspire to concede before Jarrod Bowen, Emerson and Michail Antonio put things right.

FCSB are currently seventh in the Romanian top-flight and have yet to win a game in this Europa Conference League group stage. With just two points to their name, they are out of the running to qualify. They have also conceded 15 goals, which is the most of any side in the group stage so far.

Oh, and they come into this game having just lost coach Nicolae Dica, who stepped down after Monday's loss at Universitatea Cluj.

  12. Can Nelson use display against Forest as platform?published at 19:54 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2022

    Arsenal v Zurich (20:00 GMT)

Oli Price-Bates, The Fresh Arsenal podcast, external

Last week Mikel Arteta said Arsenal needed a reset after two games in a row which they failed to win. A home match against Nottingham Forest presented the perfect opportunity to do just that and this team seized that opportunity.

The Gunners cut through Forest with ease in a game that will have reinstalled confidence to lots of this team. None more so than Reiss Nelson.

Nelson turns 23 in December and he was once thought of as one of the most exciting players to emerge from Hale End. His progress has stalled in recent years but sometimes players just need a break to put them back on track.

He must see the success the likes of Bukayo Saka have had in this team and under this manager and be desperate to replicate it.

Nelson has a lot more to do to convince fans and Arteta that he is part of this project for the long haul but, with a real lack of attacking depth, there’s a space in this squad for him if he can use his performance against Forest as a platform to propel his career back on track.

  13. 'It's what we have' - Arteta dismisses schedule concernspublished at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2022

    Arsenal v Zurich (20:00 GMT)

Mikel Arteta is not complaining about Arsenal's gruelling fixture schedule that leaves them facing a Thursday night game against Zurich before a 12:00 GMT kick-off at Chelsea on Sunday.

The Gunners need a win against the Swiss side to guarantee a first-placed finish in Group A of the Europa League and Arteta is trusting in the plan to make sure his players are ready to deliver in both games.

"It's been a challenge having to play every three days and trying to load the players equally over the past five or six weeks," he said. "But we have managed to do it.

"We have not repeated too many blocks of four games with certain individuals, and we will continue that to try to get everyone as fresh as possible and keep their rhythm."

It is rare for a Sunday fixture to be played at midday, exacerbated by the fact Chelsea get their Champions League game out of the way on Wednesday and have an extra day's rest.

"We know that when playing in the Europa League this can be an issue," said Arteta. "The early kick-off is a little unusual, but it's what we have. We will certainly have a competitive team against Zurich."

Nathan: One of the worse 45 minutes under ETH that second half. No will to score, no attacking risks, no real movement. Easy to defend against. Very disappointing.

Andri: Last minutes of the game, yet they didn't do straight corner even though Maguire was in. Such is the lack of self-believe in the United squad

  15. Moyes to give 'opportunity' and wants key Aguerd minutespublished at 19:49 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2022

FCSB v West Ham (20:00 GMT)

As we've already mentioned, David Moyes said he would give some of West Ham's youngsters "an opportunity" in Thursday's Europa Conference League fixture at FCSB but has challenged his side to make it six wins from six in the competition.

The Hammers have already qualified in top spot with a game to spare but could become the first team in the history of the competition to win all six group games.

“The biggest motivation for us is that we’ve won the group and we now need to finish it off,” Moyes said. “We’re going to give some of the younger players an opportunity in the game. We’ve left the bulk of the players back home and we’re looking forward to the game.

“We’re not full of young players but there are a couple of young players that are going to start tomorrow night. We’re going to give them an opportunity, and maybe some of the others will get an opportunity as well, because in some of the other games we weren’t able to do so."

Moyes said the club's "biggest priority" is now the league - where they sit 13th before a home game against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

But the Scot hopes the trip to face Romania's FCSB offers £30m summer signing Nayef Aguerd the chance to get valuable minutes.

The Morocco defender made his debut against Silkeborg last week after overcoming an injury that has kept him out since signing for the club.

“We hope Nayef can play again, hopefully as long as he can," Moyes added. "We’re trying to get him back and these games have been really good for him.

“We included him the squad from the start because we hoped he might be available for the last couple of games, and that’s the way it’s proved to be. Hopefully we can get him another good part of a game under his belt.”

    • Arsenal’s victory against Zurich earlier in the competition was the first meeting between these sides. Arsenal have now won all seven of their matches against Swiss clubs, the most games they’ve played against teams from a particular nation while winning each time.
    • Zurich have lost all five of their away matches against English sides in Europe, conceding three goals per game on average. Their most recent away game against an English club saw them lose 3-0 against Aston Villa in the Uefa Intertoto Cup in July 2002.
    • Arsenal have lost just one of their last 19 group stage matches at home in major European competitions (W15 D3), while they have won each of their last five such games.
    • Zurich have won only one of their last 17 away games in major European competitions (D3 L13), beating AEK Larnaca in this competition back in September 2018.

    Cheers Gaz.

One down, two games involving English sides to go.

These two might not seem like the most dramatic and exciting games on paper, but Arsenal won't want to join Manchester United in those Europa League play-offs.

And you just try telling Oliver Scarles and Divin Mubama that the dead rubber in Romania isn't important!

Right, we'll have reaction from that game coming soon but there's also more action up shortly with Arsenal and West Ham in European action.

Phil Dawkes has the pleasure of overseeing their games and he has just jumped into the driving seat now.
