    Netherlands v Ecuador (16:00 GMT)

A young reporter from Senegal apparently did not ask a question at Louis van Gaal's press conference on Thursday, instead he just told him that he was a fan.

The Netherlands boss responded by saying "we are going to hug later" and it looks like he was as good as his word.

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal says that Memphis Depay could start Friday's World Cup group game against Ecuador.

Barcelona forward Depay came on after 62 minutes against Senegal on Monday and was involved in one of the Dutch goals, as he gradually returns to fitness from a thigh injury that kept him sidelined for two months.

"He has played 30 minutes and the next step would be 45 minutes," said Van Gaal.

"The injury he has makes it so difficult to decide when he can start so we have to look at him. But he is an extraordinary player and so I have set aside my principles because I consider him to be incredibly important to my team.

"I explained this to the players, that I am doing all this for Memphis, and the players accepted this."

I've just bumped into three England fans, who have been living out here in Doha for a few years now.

Their views on the World Cup here are very interesting, especially on the impact the tournament will have for the future of the country.

They explained when they arrived in Qatar five years ago, there wasn't even any drainage and the Metro system didn't exist.

“The World Cup coming here is huge for the country, it will be a massive catalyst, " one of them said.

“The £200bn isn’t just for a World Cup, it is for the development of a country. The benefits will be here long after the World Cup has gone."

  8. Ronaldo can't sit and watch from the sidelinespublished at 11:04 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    Portugal 3-2 Ghana

Cristiano Ronaldo needs to be involved, even when he's in the dugout.

The image of an injured CR7 hopping along the touchline on crutches and barking instructions to his team at the Euro 2016 final has become one of the iconic scenes of modern football.

The 37-year-old legend was in similar mode towards the end of Portugal's opening match against Ghana on Thursday.

Ronaldo opened the scoring on the night with a penalty. When he was brought off by manager, Fernando Santos, with 88 minutes gone and Portugal winning 3-1, it looked like job done.

Instead, a very nervy period of extra-time followed for the European team. Ghana's Osman Bukari scored in the 89th minute and Inaki Wiliams almost stole the ball from keeper Diogo Costa to level the match in the final minute of stoppage time.

It's fair to say that Ronaldo did not look pleased at how his teammates had managed the situation.

    One from last night now...

Ghanaian player Osman Bukari has defended his imitation of Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic 'Siuuu' celebration after scoring a late consolation in the team's 2-3 loss to Portugal.

He had faced some criticism on social media that the celebration was disrespectful towards Ronaldo - who usually celebrates his goals by jumping up while rotating in mid-air and lands shouting "siuuu".

But Bukhari dismissed the concerns as "incorrect"'.

He said he "was overcome by the emotion of the moment of scoring for my country on my World Cup debut".

"My upbringing doesn’t permit me to be disrespectful to elders let alone one of my idols," he added.

More now on the scene before the game...

Iran's players sang their national anthem before Friday's World Cup game against Wales after not doing so before their opener against England.

They had stayed silent at Khalifa International Stadium on Monday in an apparent expression of support for anti-government protests in Iran.

As the players joined in with the anthem on Friday, loud jeers could be heard from Iran fans in the stadium.

Mass protests in Iran in recent months have been met with a fierce crackdown.

  14. Kick It Out accuses Fifa of 'sinister abuse of power'published at 10:42 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

    ArmbandImage source, Getty Images

The chair of anti-racism group Kick It Out has accused Fifa of "sinister abuse of power" in the OneLove armband row.

Sanjay Bhandari was responding to reports that captains faced "unlimited liability" if they wore the OneLove pro-diversity armband.

The PA news agency reported that a booking to a captain wearing the band would have only been the starting point of the sanctions, with Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and the other five skippers also set to have been prevented from entering the pitch wearing it.

According to Fifa rules, "political, religious or personal messages or slogans" are banned, and it instead offered the captains an armband that says "No Discrimination".

"What Fifa did is beyond failing to live their values and is a sinister abuse of power designed to silence - hence the German gag protest," Bhandari tweeted, in reference to Germany players covering their mouths during the team photograph before their opener against Japan.

"I guess if you hang around with autocratic dictators long enough, you start picking up some of their habits."

  18. Kane wore a rainbow watch ahead of Iran matchpublished at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2022

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted spotted something interesting on Harry Kane's wrist on Monday. Ahead of England's opening match in Group B, the 29-year-old forward was seen wearing a rainbow-coloured Rolex watch.

England captain Kane had been due to wear the OneLove armband for the match against Iran, as a way to promote diversity and inclusion. The armband features a Pride rainbow.

However, those plans were ditched at the last minute when it was announced that players would receive yellow cards for doing so - something which drew a lot of criticism.

Could Kane's choice of watch be a simple coincidence?
