  3. Senegal tie 'great news' for Englandpublished at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

England v Senegal (Sunday, 4 December, 19:00 GMT)

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the tie with Senegal is great news for England if they've kept everyone fit.

Before this competition, if you've watched any African football in recent times, you would have thought Senegal were really dangerous and they have got good players. But they don't have the depth with strikers. They've lost one or two players.

One thing Senegal do have though is that they are playing with energy levels that are quite scary. England found that difficult against USA so it's not a foregone conclusion.

But, I think it's going to plan so far if you're England.

England v Senegal (Sunday, 4 December, 19:00 GMT)

Of course, as well as the resolution of the group stages, we can now start looking forward to England's last-16 game with Senegal on Sunday (19:00 GMT).

Former Three Lions defender Stephen Warnock told the Football News Show that the African side will ask questions, but that England should have too much for them.

  5. Ten Hag may pay close attention to Poland v Argentinapublished at 14:17 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Poland v Argentina (19:00 GMT, live on BBC TV, radio, online/app)

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag may want to pay particular attention to how Lisandro Martinez handles Robert Lewandowski this evening.

Ten Hag has a lot of players engaged at the World Cup in Qatar. Argentina centre-back, Martinez, whom Ten Hag brought with him from Ajax in the summer, will potentially face his biggest test of the World Cup campaign, tasked with keeping Poland's star striker Lewandowski quiet.

What's more, Martinez will likely face Lewandowski again in February when United play Barcelona in a Europa League play-off.

How Martinez manages tonight could give Ten Hag some important insights for that encounter.

  6. Messi could lift World Cup trophy - Pochettinopublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Former Argentina defender and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says that managing the "feeling, the emotion, the stress" at the World Cup is really important for Argentina.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's World Cup Daily, he acknowledged their tricky start to Group C but insisted the Argentina team could go all the way, providing they come up with one particular tactic.

"They need to give the ball to Leo every time he's free to play," he said. "The only possibility to win the World Cup is to build organisation around the best player in the world and that is Leo Messi."

On the match with Saudi Arabia, which Argentina lost, Pochettino argues Argentina had "no time to prepare" but concedes their opponents deserve credit.

"They were very aggressive - and with some quality players they were able to play their chances," he said. "Plus, [they had] luck, which you always need."

  7. Poland manager compares Messi to an alpine skierpublished at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Poland v Argentina (19:00 GMT, BBC TV, radio & online/app)

A lot of attention will, of course, focus on Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski in this one. At 35 and 34 respectively, this could be a final opportunity for both to prove themselves on the biggest platform.

Poland manager Czeslaw Michniewicz was keen to remind everyone that this is "a match between Poland and Argentina," and "not between Lewandowski and Messi."

Nevertheless the question remains, how do Poland stop Messi?

Outlining his plan, Michniewicz compared the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner to a former Olympic gold medallist in alpine skiing.

"Today we talked about Messi acting on the pitch like Alberto Tomba on the slope," the Poland manager said.

"He can avoid everyone like Tomba did, so I need to set up the poles, meaning place our players in a way to make it a difficult ride for him. One player wouldn't stop Messi, we need to do it as a team. But we are ready for it."

There you have it - ski Poles redefined.

BBC Sport columnist and former Argentina player Pablo Zabaleta says that 'nothing is done for Argentina or Lionel Messi yet':

"You all saw the tension and anxiety we suffered during our game against Mexico until we scored, and also the relief at the final whistle after our 2-0 victory," he says.

"There was so much pressure on us after we lost to Saudi Arabia and that relief was for everyone - for the whole team and all our fans here, but especially for Messi.

"It would have been a terrible and painful end to see Argentina eliminated in the group stage in what is probably his last World Cup.

"We are not in the last 16 yet, though. Now we have to win again - this time against Poland - to be sure we make it."

  9. All-female referee team to take charge at men's tournament for first timepublished at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Costa Rica v Germany (Thur, 19:00 GMT)

An all-female refereeing team will take charge of a men's World Cup game for the first time in Thursday's group-stage game between Costa Rica and Germany.

Stephanie Frappart will be the first woman to referee at a men's World Cup.

The Frenchwoman became the first female official at the tournament when she was named as the fourth official for Mexico and Poland's game last Tuesday.

"We know the pressure," Frappart told BBC Sport before the tournament.

"But I think we will not change ourselves. Be calm, focused, concentrate, and don't think too much about the media and everything, just be focused on the field."

We've also got the team news dripping in from Australia against Denmark.

It's just the one change for the Socceroos who probably only need a draw to qualify, Milos Degenec coming in to replace Fran Karacic at right-back.

Australia XI: Ryan, Degenek, Souttar, Rowles, Behich, Mooy, Irvine, McGree, Goodwin, Leckie, Duke.

Win-or-bust for Denmark so Kasper Hjulmand makes another change up front. Ex-Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite is brought in to lead the line as one of three changes, with Andreas Skov Olsen and Jesper Lindstrom also recalled.

Denmark XI: Schmeichel, Andersen, Christensen, Kristensen, Hojbjerg, Jensen, Eriksen, Maehle, Lindstrom, Braithwaite, Skov Olsen.

Tunisia v France (15:00 GMT, live on BBC TV, radio, online/app)

Some early team news from Education City Stadium in Qatar.

Kylian Mbappe is rested - one of nine changes made by Didier Deschamps to his already-qualified France side. Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud are also on the bench.

France XI: Mandanda, Disasi, Varane, Konate, Camavinga, Fofana, Tchouameni, Veretout, Guendouzi, Coman, Kolo Muani.

The alterations should give Tunisia hope with their boss also making six changes to the team that lost to Australia on Saturday.

Tunisia XI: Dahmen, Kechrida, Talbi, Meriah, Maaloul, Ghandri, Ben Romdhane, Laidouni, Skhiri, Slimane, Khazri.

Build-up to this one, and Group D's other game between Australia and Denmark starts over here from 2pm.

  12. 'We will not fool ourselves by their under-performance'published at 13:45 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Croatia v Belgium (Thur, 15:00 GMT)

Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic has played down suggestions Thursday's opponents Belgium are a fading force despite their patchy performances in Qatar.

Belgium were beaten by Morocco in their second group game and will likely need a victory over 2018 finalists Croatia to have any chance of qualifying from Group F.

"We are playing against the second-best football team in the world and they were number one," he said.

"They are a great team and if we could choose we would not have selected this match to be the decisive one.

"We will not fool ourselves by their under-performance in the last two games."

"Belgium are a top team, they have [Kevin] De Bruyne and [Eden] Hazard and we will not be fooled by media stories and some rumours. We are expecting the best of Belgium, a top-notch national team.

"They haven't become bad football players overnight. I am not focused on any other aspects, we are just focused on their strength and quality."

  13. 'The players were fearful of losing'published at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Croatia v Belgium (Thur, 15:00 GMT)

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez says the pressure of expectation had got to his players in their first two matches.

"There was no enjoyment. There was too much responsibility," he said. "Every player was fearful of losing. We are not expected to lose.

"Tomorrow there is no doubt. A draw and we are out."

  14. Belgium are not in crisis - Castagnepublished at 13:38 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Croatia v Belgium (Thur, 15:00 GMT)

There has been a bit of theme developing in Belgium news conferences this week: players denying that they are in crisis.

Roberto Martinez's side, ranked second in the world, we shocked 2-0 by Morocco last week and will likely need a win against Croatia in their final group game to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Timothy Castagne has been the latest member of the squad to face the press, revealing that the player had exchanged some harsh words after the Morocco defeat.

"The first two games were not as good as we hoped. We didn't show everything we are capable of," said the Leicester defender. "But we are not in crisis."

"It was important to get things off our chests and share our views," he said of their post-match meeting. "We also shared our ideas about how we can improve."

  15. 'England's only problems right now are good ones'published at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

This World Cup is only just getting started, but England are where we want them to be - comfortably into the last 16, and the only problems Gareth Southgate has right now are good ones.

It gets everyone buzzing when we play like we did in the second half against Wales. Yes, there are bigger tests to come, but let's enjoy a good performance which sets us up perfectly for Sunday, and Senegal.

We talk about different sides having an identity, and that was a great example of what I want England's identity to be: we had a high press, lots of energy and we were on the front foot.

That won't work in every game, but we are a much better team when we play that way.

There has been none better than Bobby Charlton's piledriver against Mexico in 1966. His goals in the early games enabled England to reach the final and of course win it!

David Platt's over the shoulder volley against Belgium in Italia 90. A great tournament and a game which I watched in Corsica (with my future wife) surrounded by locals who wanted Belgium to win.

I have had the privilege of watching England for many world cups, my favourite goal for England has to be a very young Michael Owen scoring against Argentina at France 98

Lots of plaudits but no points so far for Canada and they will be on their way home from Qatar after their final group game with Morocco.

Coach John Herdman though says his side will stick to their principles and look to go out swinging.

"It is a real opportunity for our players, for our country, to keep stepping forward," he said.

"Football people have been waiting for Canada to arrive and were wondering how we were going to show up. I think we showed up on the front foot and that will be our approach again.

"We will go into this match with an opportunity to make some more history."

Canada v Morocco (Thursday, 1 December, 15:00 GMT, watch live on BBC Two and iPlayer)

Morocco coach Walid RegraguiImage source, Getty Images

Morocco will not be playing for a draw in their game with Canada tomorrow, says coach Walid Regragui, even though they only need a point to qualify from Group F.

Sunday's sensational 2-0 win over Belgium has put the Atlas Lions in prime position to reach the last 16 for the first time since 1986 - but it's not a game they are taking for granted.

"We know that we are coming up against a team which has got nothing to lose as they are already eliminated and will be out to hold their heads up high," said Regragui.

"If we are looking for a draw that would be a mistake. We are motivated and preparing for a difficult game."
