  2. Bale 'struggled to make impact'published at 08:46 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Kath Morgan
Former Wales defender on BBC Radio Wales

I think Gareth has to be honest with himself. He has been magnificent, make no bones about that. We have had an amazing ride and he’s been world class.

Everything he’s won with Real Madrid – you know you can’t deny that guy is a phenomenal footballer.

But I think recently he’s struggled even since he moved over to LA. I just ask the question: Could he have played more minutes? Has he chosen not to play more minutes before this World Cup?

If that’s the case it was a mistake. He certainly hasn’t made in my opinion, any impact whatsoever in any of the three games, only the penalty (against the United States).

And obviously we are grateful for that point against the USA, but when you look at him in the 90 minutes, his contribution has been very, very poor.

“I’ll keep going as long as I am wanted”.

That’s the message from Gareth Bale after his record 111th appearance for Wales last night ended in misery against England.

Bale, 33, went off at half-time after having just seven touches of the ball with boss Robert Page saying he “had been struggling with his hamstring.”

Wales' talisman scored their only goal of the tournament, a penalty against the USA in their first group game, but struggled to make an impact against Iran and England.

  4. 'Wales fans are realistic'published at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's been an unbelievable achievement for Wales to reach their first World Cup in 64 years.

Welsh fans are realistic. If you look at their starting XI against England, it's a lower Premier League or high Championship team. Wales know where they are but it's about the next step now.

How can they get their younger fresh players to follow on the legacy?

  5. 'A winter World Cup did not suit Wales'published at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

    Kath Morgan
Former Wales defender on BBC Radio Wales

If you have listened to me during the last few weeks I have not stopped going on about the fitness levels.

I question these boys. We know they are not playing week in, week out. That is a problem for them and there’s nothing they can do about it at their clubs.

But for me, conditioning – you can do that on your own for 20-30 minutes, every other day at an intense level.

I think the boys have had an absolute horror show in the fact that they can’t believe, I don’t think, how fit the Iranians were and how we couldn’t get close to the ball. So it has 100% been a huge factor.

It’s lack of preparation. I think we were in a luxury position before the (2016) Euros that we had three or four weeks together; the same for the 2020 Euros, we had time together.

You’re ultimately going to a winter World Cup where you’ve had three days to prepare and that does not suit Wales.

  6. 'You brought us all together'published at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Actor Michael Sheen, whose rousing monologue in support of the Wales team went viral earlier this year, has tweeted Diolch Cymru - thank you Wales - for their efforts in Qatar, saying it was a "privilege" to support them and that they made the country "proud".

Wales arrived in Qatar with real pride after qualifying for their first World Cup since 1958 but they must reflect on a poor campaign after England confirmed the formality of their elimination.

Page's side have always relied heavily on the inspiration provided by Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey but the two great figures of this fine era for Welsh football found this World Cup a step too far, with those around them simply not of the quality to make up for that deficit.

Bale's only meaningful contribution was the penalty that earned a draw against USA in their opening game ,but he contributed nothing in the damaging loss to Iran and was little more than a passenger in his 45 minutes against England.

Ramsey was no better and while the duo's magnificent contribution to Wales can never be under-estimated the brutal truth is that their lack of match sharpness left them unable to exert their usual influence on games.

Now the question is whether they will carry on with their international careers - or whether their country moves on without them.

It had the feel of the end of an era for Wales here on Tuesday. It is an era that has brought much joy, and was appreciated by their outstanding support after the final whistle, but this was a desperate anti-climax after reaching their first World Cup for 64 years.

  10. 'It's necessary to challenge'published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Football may be dominating the headlines on the pitch but the controversies off the field in this World Cup still continue.

UK Sports Minister Stuart Andrew wore the 'One Love' anti-discrimination armband to last night's game between England and Wales - and he spoke to BBC sports editor Dan Roan beforehand.

There's no doubt these boys can play. None. The Three Lions should play football like we now play Test cricket: Fearless, committed, on the front foot. Yes, we might leak a goal here and there but the opposition will fear us more, than we do them. Coach, let the boys play !

    Anon

As an England fan I think we have been alright. We are exactly where we should be - top of the group and qualified and will face tougher games. It’s a positive start and lots to build on going forward. I think Wales will be disappointed. I get everyone saying they are proud for qualifying- first time in 64 years etc... But looking at the group I think they would have expected to qualify. USA and Iran were both games that were very much winnable. They have qualified for the last few tournaments so it shouldn’t be a novelty being at a tournament any more. I think they have been mentally weak this World Cup and got carried away with emotions.

  13. 'Poignant' moment for Rashfordpublished at 08:08 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

    Phil McNulty

    Marcus RashfordImage source, PA Media

Marcus Rashford has taken a long and sometimes painful road to repair the confidence that looked shattered at points recently but he resembled someone reaching journey's end as he inspired England into the World Cup's last 16.

Rashford struggled on the margins at Manchester United last season, a shadow of his true exciting talent, but signs of recovery have been detected under new manager Erik ten Hag this season and England were the beneficiaries as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Wales

He has taken the form which has made him United's top scorer with eight goals this season to Qatar. After his instant impact against Iran last Monday, and he was the star of the show with two goals here.

It was also a poignant personal moment for Rashford as well as one of celebration for England as he said: "I lost one of my friends a couple of days ago. He had quite a long battle with cancer. I'm pleased I scored for him. He was a big supporter and a good friend of mine. He was someone who came into my life."

Tyne Fox: Really pleased for Marcus Rashford. He looked more like the player we saw when he pummelled Arsenal in his first game for Man Utd. Watch out Senegal!

Birdbrain: The best form of defence is attack. My advice to Gareth and the team would be play with confidence and positivity. There is no team in this World Cup that England needs to fear. Sitting back hurt us against Croatia four years ago and Italy last year. Take it to the opposition and don't stop at two goals!

  19. Rashford inspires England winpublished at 07:44 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

    Phil McNulty

    Marcus RashfordImage source, Reuters

Marcus Rashford inspired England to the victory required to top Group B and ensure it was despair for Wales as they went out of the tournament after a bitterly disappointing World Cup campaign.

Wales needed to either beat England and hope Iran and USA ended in a draw or pursue the more unlikely outcome of running up a four-goal victory margin at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

England, who now face Senegal in the last 16 on Sunday (19:00 GMT), ensured neither scenario was ever a serious consideration as they dominated throughout and took full control after an uneventful first 45 minutes.

Wales manager Rob Page was forced to replace Gareth Bale at half-time because of an injury, although the great talisman had only had seven touches in an anonymous display.

And any hope of Wales qualifying for the last 16 was wiped out as England scored twice within six minutes of the restart.
