It's not been an ideal World Cup so far for Denmark who must beat Australia and hope Tunisia do not defeat France to qualify for the knockout stages.

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand admits that "emotions are very, very high" in the camp of the Euro 2020 semi-finalists.

"Of course there is pressure," Hjulmand said. "These players are very, very used to big games and the more experience you have of these kinds of events from maybe feeling the ressure, you feel pride.

"It's a World Cup so emotions are very, very high and with football you can multiply your feelings by 10.

"The fear of losing is very much involved."

Let's have a look at some pre-match stats ahead of the Australia-Denmark clash. Will the Socceroos repeat history and avoid defeat against Christian Eriksen's side?

    • Australia have won just one of their four meetings with Denmark in all competitions - and the victory dates back to a friendly in 2010.
    • Australia have lost eight of their 11 World Cup games against European sides - but one of the three times they avoided defeat was against Denmark.
    • In fact, Australia have won just three of their 18 World Cup matches. The Socceroos have also kept just two clean sheets in these 18 games - a 0-0 draw with Chile in 1974, and their 1-0 win against Tunisia last time out.
    • Denmark haven't won any of their last five World Cup games. Last time they won one was against Peru in 2018.
    • Christian Eriksen has created seven chances at the 2022 World Cup, at least five more than any other player for Denmark.
  4. Arnold wants 'to put football on the map'published at 12:43 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

Australia v Denmark (15:00 GMT, live on BBC TV, radio and online/app)

    Graham ArnoldImage source, Reuters

Australia coach Graham Arnold is hoping to "put football on the map" down under as Australia aim to reach the last 16 of the World Cup for only the second time in their history.

A win against Denmark later today will secure a place in the knockout stages and he admitted his team had been inspired by watching the 2006 side - boasting the likes of Tim Cahill and Mark Viduka - that reached the last 16 in Germany.

"This generation watched those guys for 10 years," said Arnold. "They are talking about emulating the 2006 squad and putting the game on the map a bit more in Australia.

"To leave a legacy is huge - putting smiles on Australian faces once is not enough. Let's do it some more times."

Olivier Giroud celebrates after scoring against Australia

Before Australia’s decider with Denmark this afternoon, BBC commentator Pien Meulensteen visited the Socceroos’ camp to catch up with her dad, Rene, the assistant manager of the Australia national team.

He talks about the psychology behind facing a team like France, saying that even though Australia have no "difference makers" like Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann or Olivier Giroud.

"For us, the team is the star - it has to be," he said. "We have to have [our success] from togetherness and fighting spirit."

In last week's 4-1 defeat against France, Meulensteen admits that "every small mistake was punished" but that he did not want the disappointment of that result to fester in disappointment.

"We addressed the players straight away," he said. "We learned from it and moved on."

Hear Meulensteen's full thoughts on the BBC's World Cup Daily podcast from 14'04 on BBC Sounds over here.

  6. Tunisia-France: pre-match statspublished at 12:33 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Tunisia v France (15:00 GMT)

It wouldn't be the World Cup without a hefty dose of stats... Here are some ahead of Tunisia v France in just over two hours:

    • France have never lost in four previous meetings with Tunisia. They also haven't met since 2010.
    • France coach Didier Deschamps has won 11 of his 14 games in charge at the World Cup.
    • France have won each of their last six World Cup games, their longest ever winning run in the competition. Only Italy in the 1930s and Brazil between 2002-2006 have ever had longer winning runs.
    • Kylian Mbappé could be just the second player to score in four in a row for France, after Just Fontaine back in 1958. Fontaine scored 13 goals overall in the World Cup for France, against Mbappé's seven.
    • Meanwhile, Tunisia remain winless in this World Cup: should they also fail to win this match, it will mean they haven’t won a game in four of their six World Cup appearances.
    • Tunisia are yet to score from 27 shots in their two games at this year's World Cup.
    • Tunisia have only kept two clean sheets in their 17 World Cup matches. Only Saudi Arabia (6%) and Australia (11%) have a poorer clean sheet ratio.

To mark the occasion I'm sure he won't mind another look at his six Golden Boot-winning goals from Mexico '86.

David: Best England World Cup goal? Joe Cole vs Sweden in the 2-2 draw, 2006. Chests it then lets fly. If a Brazilian had scored it, they'd be showing it constantly.

In 1990 I was just 18 and had to go out with parents on the night of the Last 16 match v Belgium. Avoided the subject the whole evening, got back close to midnight, fired up the VHS, sat through the whole thing with my Dad and saw David Platt score the winner in the 120th minute about 2am.....worth every minute

  9. 'Nothing is impossible'published at 12:20 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Tunisia v France (15:00 GMT)

Tunisia are bottom of Group D with just one point from two games and have yet to score a goal this tournament.

But boss Jalel Kadri is keeping the faith as they prepare to take on reigning champions France needing a win to keep their World Cups alive.

"The message I convey to our players is nothing is impossible, we are still alive, we are still motivated and we will ready for this last battle," Kadri said.

"We still have high hopes. "I believe in the players and hopefully we will be lucky and move onto the next phase."

Kadri hinted that he may stay on as coach if Tunisia win, having previously indicated he would resign if they failed to make it out of the group.

"Let's wait for the result for the match and we will see later," he added. " We are people who bare responsibility and hopefully I will able to answer your question after the match."

PM Rishi Sunak just opened his weekly Prime Minister's Questions sessions by mentioning the World Cup: "I'm sure colleagues around the House will join me in congratulating England on their 3-0 victory over Wales in Qatar last night," he says.

The result meant Wales crashed out of the competition. Still, the PM commended Wales "for inspiring millions".

  11. Mbappe doesn't have a big ego - Deschampspublished at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Tunisia v France (15:00 GMT)

France coach Didier Deschamps says star striker Kylian Mbappe "doesn't have a big ego" and would have no issue if he was rested for their final group game against Tunisia.

The reigning champions are all-but assured of top spot in Group D given their three-point advantage and vastly superior goal difference to second-placed Australia, meaning Deschamps could choose to rotate his squad for Wednesday's game.

"His fitness is fine so we don't need to manage that," Deschamps said.

"Perhaps then you are asking about his ego. Kylian doesn't have a big ego. Of course he's an important player, a key player, but he's a team player.

"Of course he's a star because he's such a vital player but he's not 18 anymore. He's got a bit more experience. He always wants to play but that's true of all players.

"Not all of them can start tomorrow. There are a lot of factors to take into account."

After Group D has kept us interested this afternoon, attention will turn to the last set of matches for Group C as Lionel Messi aims to keep Argentina's World Cup hopes alive.

At 19:00 GMT, live on BBC One, his side face Poland while Saudi Arabia will meet Mexico.

Almost everything is still at play in this group - even Mexico can still qualify, depending on how the other teams do.

Take a look here for an overview of how things stand at the end of the group stage.

Two matches today will decide which teams from Group D go through to the next stage.

At 15:00 GMT, Tunisia will face France while Australia meet Denmark.

France are already through, and a draw will be enough to see them top the group.

If Australia or Denmark win, they will progress. Winless Tunisia face an uphill struggle, needing to beat France by two goals or more and hope Australia and Denmark draw.

  17. Foden gave England fans what they asked forpublished at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

There has been a lot of talk about Phil Foden at the World Cup.

Ahead of England's final Group B match against Wales on Tuesday, the 22-year-old Manchester City star boy had only been allowed limited opportunities to get involved at the tournament.

He came on after 71 minutes in the 6-2 win over Iran and was unused in England's drab 0-0 draw with the United States. Following that match, many fans were calling on Southgate to make more use of his young creative midfielder.

Foden started up front with Kane and Rashford for Tuesday's encounter. He certainly justified his selection.

  18. Three England backheels in one movepublished at 11:32 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

This would have been a contender for greatest England World Cup goal.

Last night, a move started by midfielder Jude Bellingham almost led to something sensational.

In a lovely attacking sequence, Bellingham danced into the box and engaged in a trio of back-heels between himself, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden.

It was just unfortunate - for England - that Manchester City midfielder Foden wasn't quite able to finish things off.
