  1. Senegal 'not afraid of England'published at 10:17 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Ecuador 1-2 Senegal

    Babacar Diarra
    Sports journalist BBC Africa

When you enter the knockout stage you should play these games without any inferiority complex and I am sure players like Kalidou Koulibaly and Ismaila Sarr know the players they will face so they are not afraid of England.

They know England have a strong team but before the tournament Senegal thought they could go far so I don't see why that would change now.

  2. Senegal thriving despite Mane absencepublished at 10:13 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Ecuador 1-2 Senegal

Much has been made of the absence of Senegal talisman Sadio Mane from this tournament through injury but they have found goals from elsewhere, their five thus far in Qatar all coming from different players.

Victory over Ecuador secured a first last-16 appearance since 2002, when they shocked France in the opening game on their way to the quarter-finals and, before the game, Senegal dedicated their efforts to former Fulham and Portsmouth midfielder Papa Bouba Diop - scorer of the famous winner against the French - who died, two years ago to the day, in 2020 aged 42.

Senegal became the first African team to beat a South American side at the World Cup since Cameroon against Colombia in 1990, ending a 21-game winless run in such meetings, and are only the third African nation to reach the knockout stages on two or more occasions, emulating Nigeria and Ghana.

They will, however, be without influential midfielder Idrissa Gueye for the second round - and what would have been his 100th cap - after he picked up a second yellow card of the tournament.

  3. Senegal win to set up England tiepublished at 10:08 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Ecuador 1-2 Senegal

Senegal beat Ecuador 2-1 to secure second place in Group A and set up a last 16 tie against England.

All three goals came from players based in England as Ecuador's Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo cancelled out a penalty by Watford's Ismaila Sarr before Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly's side-footer won it.

Ecuador needed just a point to progress but paid the price for a passive display as Senegal were spurred on by an almost non-stop cacophony of drumming from their supporters in Al Rayyan.

Cody Gakpo and Frenkie de Jong were on target as Louis van Gaal's side progressed to the last 16 with an unbeaten record and face the United States next.

PSV Eindhoven winger Gakpo is emerging as one of the tournament's breakout stars, scoring the opening goal in all three of the Netherlands' group games.

USA manager Gregg Berhalter praised a "determined" and "focused" performance from his side - but would not be drawn on questions about how far the US could go.

"It was a difficult proposition knowing that Iran could potentially just need a tie to go through. That made the game a little complicated," said Berhalter.

"But I saw a tremendous amount of focus. The end of the game is what I'm most proud of - it was extreme determination not to buckle.

"I'm sure there's a lot of people watching. The US reporters will talk to you about defining this group and I think it's starting to take shape.

"You see how unified [the players] are and how much energy they put into it and along the way is some pretty good soccer.

"It's a great opportunity but it's not something we are going into thinking it's an honour. We deserve to be in the position we're in and we want to keep going.

"We don't want to be at home next Wednesday."

  15. USA edge Iran to reach last 16published at 09:12 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Iran 0-1 USA

The United States joined England in the last 16 thanks to a narrow victory over Iran.

Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic scored the only goal, turning Sergino Dest's header over the line seven minutes before half-time.

However, he collided with Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand in the process and needed several minutes of treatment - before being replaced at the break.

Iran went close when Brentford's Saman Ghoddos came off the bench to strike inches over the bar when he was unmarked in the box, before Saeid Ezatolahi also curled over.

Perhaps their best chance came deep in stoppage time, when Morteza Pouraliganji met a free-kick with a diving header that went just wide.

The United States held on though to reach the knockout stages for the third time in four tournaments.

Rashford rightly getting plaudits but spare a thought for Maguire who has been excellent, even if the attacks faced haven't been amazing. Given all the criticism I hope his contributions are recognised.

Jordan Henderson doesn't get the praise he deserves. The energy, aggression and quality of the the whole group goes up 50% when he starts. He demands 100% from the players around him and is always the one who brings the tempo back up when it dips. You can always hear him barking encouragement and motivating players throughout the game and It works. Essential England player.

    Joe

I have been predicting that England will reach the semi final. So I have been looking at the stats for the group stages at the three previous World Cups where England were semi finalists - 1966, 1990 and 2018 - compared to now. 1966. Won 2 and drew 1. Scored 4 goals. 1990. Won 1 and drew 2. Scored 2 goals. 2018. Won 2, lost 1. Scored 8 goals. 2022. Won 2, drew 1. Scored 9 goals. England doing as well as 1966 and scoring a lot more goals. And doing better than 1990 and 2018.

    Wales 0-3 England

As this dream-like state faded to black under a desert night sky in Qatar, it felt like the end of an era - or at least the beginning of its end - like no other in the country's history.

Put simply, Wales has never had it so good. For generations, Welsh football had been synonymous with, at best, narrow misses and tales of anguish and, at worst, long spells of abject failure and outright apathy.

As Robert Page and his players applauded the Red Wall and savoured one last rendition of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, the mutual love and respect was as striking as ever. Nothing could diminish the groundswell of national pride at seeing Wales back on this grandest stage of all.

And while nothing will change that fact, as well as taking the time to look back, Wales must now consider what comes next.

They can feel immensely proud to have qualified for a first World Cup for 64 years and, at the same time, they can be deeply disappointed by their performances in Qatar.

For qualification, and what has come before in this golden era, Wales will forever be grateful. Now there remains a hope or, better, a belief that there will be more to come.

    Wales 0-3 England

    BBC Radio 5 Live

    Robert PageImage source, Getty Images

Former Wales defender Danny Gabbidon speaking to 5 Live Breakfast: "It was always going to be difficult for Wales. The first two games were so important. They needed to get points on the board and not go into the game needing something.

"It was a disappointing end to a disappointing tournament. I expected Wales to do a lot better than they did but it is important to look to the big picture and how far this team has come.

"With success brings expectation and this is the kind of pressure the players have been striving for. They want this kind of scrutiny, to qualify for major tournaments and if they don't do well, expect a bit of criticism."
