  2. Can England win the World Cup?published at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Jurgen Klinsmann
    Former Germany head coach

You have your favourites before the tournament.

I think Argentina will really get into this tournament, just a little bit delayed. England, Spain and France look sharp while Portugal are feisty and hungry.

And I'm hopeful that Germany can take that gift from Costa Rica and win their game with two or three goals difference against Costa Rica with Spain to do their job against Japan.

Anything can happen in tournament football but so far, the performances of England have been very, very positive.

  3. 'Brave' England fan goes wild amongst Wales crowdpublished at 11:19 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

This England fan didn't mind who she upset.

Defeat to England at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on Tuesday confirmed Wales' elimination from the World Cup.

It was a bitter disappointment for Rob Page's team, who was forced to take Gareth Bale off with an injury during the match.

Meanwhile, this England fan in Cardiff was too busy celebrating to extend any sympathy to Welsh supporters!

As an 8 year old in '66 watching in black and white. Bobby Charlton's 30 yard screamer vs Mexico. Huge pressure after a 0-0 in the first game. Easy to forget how good he was in that tournament ; best player there by a mile. Didn't see the final as we were on holiday in a caravan with no tv. When Germany went one up my Dad turned the radio off!

    Chesney, not Declan.

His rendition of "I Am The One And Only" at half-time must have inspired the England players to their stunning second-half showing.

    It's the only plausible explanation.

  11. 'It was a real breakthrough performance'published at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Phil Foden’s former coach Steve Eyre says he’s “very proud” of the England forward's performance game against Wales last night.

Eyre, who coached Foden when he played for the Manchester City youth team, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I don’t think [pressure] phases him.

"In the Euros, I don't think the shirt was ever his own. But now, with the performance he put in last night, I think he will be very very hard to replace now.

"Credit to Gareth Southgate. He made the right decision to play Phil Foden on the right and Marcus Rashford on the left as it gets them to play with their club mate on their natural side - Rashford and Luke Shaw, Kyle Walker and Foden.”

"I wouldn’t be in a rush to change [the line-up] because it was so devastating in the second half."

Phil Foden says he "felt the love" of England fans after scoring against Wales.

A stale team performance against USA on Friday left supporters clamouring for him to start - and he rewarded their faith with his goal and an influential performance.

"I felt the love from everyone, especially today," Foden told BBC Radio 5 Live. "The atmosphere was unbelievable and it's moments like that you'll always remember."

    Wales 0-3 England

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England midfielder Darren Anderton on BBC Radio 5 Live: “We played with a bit more freedom and it looked like the boys enjoyed last night’s game. If players are given the freedom to do what they’re good at, I think we will see better performances like in the second half.

“Marcus Rashford performing like that yesterday is wonderful - you won’t see a better free kick like that in the whole tournament.

On England’s World Cup so far: “They just get on with the job and when they’re called upon they go and do their business and that’s what you want. We're a tournament team and can go as far as we want."

Marcus Rashford is in devastating form. The 25-year-old Manchester United forward started for England on Tuesday during their match against Wales. He grabbed himself a brace to help the Three Lions finish top of Group B.

After Tuesday's match he revealed that his first goal, a superb free-kick strike, was dedicated to a friend who recently passed away.

  16. Team-mates rain tributes on Rashfordpublished at 10:34 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Wales 0-3 England

    Marcus Rashford is on fire.

After being benched against the USA, the 25-year-old England striker certainly justified his inclusion on the starting line-up against Wales on Tuesday.

The Manchester United forward was Gareth Southgate's star man, grabbing a brace on the night to help England finish top of Group B. Those goals mean that Rashford is also currently sitting joint top in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot, having scored three goals in the tournament so far.

Surely he gets a start in the game against Senegal on Sunday?

As long as they have Aliou Cisse as their coach they still have the leader of this team. Sadio Mane is the leader on the pitch and we all know who he is but the real leader is the guy who gathered all these players.

He is really showing to his players the way, this solidarity we can see from this team is proving that Cisse didn't panic after the injury to Sadio Mane.

  19. How good are Senegal?published at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

England v Senegal (19:00 GMT, Sunday)

Gone are the days when an international team packed with unknown quantities could upset England.

When Gareth Southgate's side look across the tunnel at their Senegal counterparts on Sunday, they will feel in familiar company.

At the back, rugged centre-half Kalidou Koulibaly has been at the top of European football for years and is finding his feet at Chelsea. Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy won everything last year and is a safe pair of hands.

Nampalys Mendy sweeps up in midfield for Leicester while Ismaila Sarr (Watford) and Iliman Ndiaye (Sheffield United) have looked potent in this tournament.

Superstar ex-Liverpool forward Sadio Mane may be the big miss but underestimate Senegal at your peril.
