Winning will be the only statistic on the minds of players and managers as they prepare for Sunday's World Cup final, but there are some pretty impressive milestones that could be reached when Argentina take on France at the Lusail Stadium in Doha.

Here are some of the facts and figures surrounding this mighty match-up:

    • Argentina's Lionel Messi will become the all-time record appearance maker in World Cup history, with 26, if he plays in the final. He could also become the first player to score in the group stage, last-16, quarter-final, semi-final and final in a single edition of the tournament.
    • Messi has 11 goals and eight assists in 25 World Cup appearances. If he scores or assists in the final, he will be the first player to record 20 goal involvements at the competition (counting goals in every tournament and assists since 1966).
    • France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris could become just the fourth player to captain a side in consecutive World Cup finals, after Germany's Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (1982 and 1986), Argentina's Diego Maradona (1986 and 1990) and Brazil's Dunga (1994 and 1998). If France win, Lloris would be the first to captain a winning team in two separate finals.
    • Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappé both scored for France in their 4-2 victory over Croatia in the 2018 World Cup final. Only four players have ever scored in two separate World Cup finals: Brazil's Vavá (1958, 1962) and Pelé (1958, 1970); Germany's Paul Breitner (1974, 1982), and France's Zinedine Zidane (1998, 2006).
    • Aged 23 years and 363 days on the day of this year’s showpiece, Mbappé could become the youngest player to score in multiple World Cup finals.

I have to support Argentina. Not because Messi is the GOAT. Not because France beat England. But because France are the holders. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's serial or back-to-back winners. Man City in the Premier League. Real Madrid in the Champions League. Sevilla in the Europa League. Drives me nuts. I'm not full of admiration, I just find it boring. In fact I would have loved it if both finalists had been teams who had never won it before - it would validate all the excitement of the group stage. But if France remain champions for another four years, then for me the whole thing has been a pointless waste of time.
