France do have the advantage of being in the final and winning it four years ago. You know how to handle the pressure, you've been there, but they have new players and it will be new for them.

It might be the first time some of them have played against Lionel Messi as well. The pressure will be there.

This France team are very, very competitive, especially with Didier Deschamps as their manager. They want to win it back to back.

Daryl: As an England fan, I've never supported a team that has knocked us out, and I've never supported Argentina after the 'Hand of God' goal, so choosing a side here is hell. Maybe I'll wrap some presents instead.

It is a hard final to call. A lot of fans will want to see Lionel Messi, in his final World Cup game, to win it, finally, for the first time and the last time ever.

For us, back home in France, we would be only the third team in history to win it back to back, after Italy in the 1930s and Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

It would be an incredible achievement for us, so it is a difficult one for a lot of people even to just decide who to support.

A part of me doesn't want Argentina to win after the way they reacted winning the shootout against Holland. The other part doesn't want France after Mbappe's laugh after Kane missed the penalty. The lesser of 2 evils I feel, but I guess the Messi fairytale might just win this one for me.

Argentina's Lionel Mbappe and France's Kylian Mbappe and Argentina's Lionel Messi lead the way in the race for the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup.

Both players have scored five goals so far in Qatar and have one more chance to improve their tallies when they meet in Sunday's final.

But can you name the 15 previous winners from 1966 onwards? You have four minutes. Good luck!

  8. Who will win the Golden Boot?published at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2022

The final is a four-way shootout for the Golden Boot.

Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Kylian Mbappe have scored five each - and Messi leads Mbappe 3-2 on assists which is the tiebreak.

France's Olivier Giroud and Argentina's Julian Alvarez are on four goals each - and no assists. So they need to score twice really to have a chance.

That could change if somebody scores four goals in the third-place play-off but let's not worry about that for now.

The stars are aligned [for Messi] for this tournament.

When the question is asked, 'who is the best Maradona or Messi?'

People say Messi has not won a World Cup but this could be his moment.

For me, personally, Lionel Messi is the greatest, whether or not Argentina get over the line [against France on Sunday].

I think sometimes judging it on what trophies are won isn't fair.

The longevity of his career and the quality he has produced over 10, 12 or 15 years even has just been beyond what anyone else has ever done.

In Argentina, speaking to people like Pablo Zabaleta, what he is saying is the thing with Diego Maradona is that he did get them over the line in 1986.

I think it is fair to say that if they do get over the line on Sunday it will be because of Messi.

It is a similar team [to Argentina in 1986] - not many superstars, a great work ethic, lots of players putting it in and doing the fundamentals well. Messi is the one who keeps getting them over the line so I think in Argentina, especially, it will lift him to a status that Maradona has had for many years.

    Lionel Messi or Kylian Mbappe?

Imagine having the master that is Lionel Messi and the young, already very exciting talent of Kylian Mbappe at your disposal. Well, now you have.

Do you dare leave one out? Perhaps another youngster, Julian Alvarez, has impressed you? Who will dominate your midfield? Then do you go for Hugo Lloris or Emiliano Martinez in goal?

World Cup Final. One side is favourite, the other side has Messi. One side I've loved since the Platini-Giresse-Tigana midfield of 1982. The other wins me the office WC sweepstakes. DECISIONS!!!

    France 2-0 Morocco

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

As good as France are, I think Lionel Messi and Argentina will be sat there licking their lips a little bit.

They will be thinking there are areas they can get at France, particularly down the left-hand area of their defence.

When France were run at they did panic a little bit and with Julian Alvarez and Messi dancing and wiggling around, it is going to be a great game.

France v Argentina - and Kylian Mbappe v Lionel Messi.

The Paris St Germain team-mates will be international adversaries on the sport's biggest stage.

The 23-year-old Frenchman is going for his second World Cup winner's medal, while the Argentine genius - 12 years his senior - has one last crack at winning the crown that would bolster his claims to be the greatest to have ever played the game.

Mbappe's status would be further cemented with successive triumphs, as France aim to become the second country to win consecutive World Cups, after Brazil did so in Sweden in 1958 and then in Chile four years later.

He was a scorer when France beat Croatia 4-2 in Moscow in 2018 and has the power to add to his tally now and in the future. Brazil legend Pele is the only man with three winner's medals. Only 21 men, including Pele, have won more than one. It opens up remarkable possibilities for the France forward.

For Messi, the context is different.

He is at the end of a career in which he has won everything the game has to offer - except for that single, significant gap in his honours collection: the biggest of all, the World Cup. This is now or never after he lost the 2014 final to Germany.

It is Messi's final World Cup game and Sunday is the day that could top it all, providing the perfect end to his story with Argentina. Anything else would feel despairing and hollow for the great sporting icon of his country.
