The dream is over but there was no sadness, just sheer pride.

Morocco have lit up this World Cup with an unexpected run to the semi-finals, where their hopes of a shock triumph were crushed by defending champions France.

Walid Regragui's men had made history by becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach this stage of the competition, but ultimately they came up short.

We pulled out the stops and gave everything," said Regragui. "We did cause them problems and that is quite an achievement.

"My players gave a very good image of the team, a showcase of their quality. It is difficult to take, they wanted to rewrite history books.

"You can't win a World Cup by miracles, only by hard work - and that is what we will keep doing."

Didier Deschamps will become the sixth boss to manage in multiple men's World Cup finals.

Only one of the other five have won both - Italy's Vittorio Pozzo in 1934 and 1938.

Deschamps is actually going for his third World Cup. He won it in 1998 as a player. Les Bleus have never won a World Cup without him.

France don't even have to play well to win. They go through periods where you think they are rocking.

They have the experience and the know-how. They are rugged at times and they have explosive power at the other end who can score goals and define games.

France were pushed all the way by World Cup wild cards Morocco before the holders sealed a place in Sunday's final against Argentina.

The first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final refused to buckle despite suffering the early blows of losing key defender Nayef Aguerd to injury after he was named in the starting line-up, and then going behind to Theo Hernandez's scrambled fifth minute goal.

France, for all Morocco's endeavour and spirit, were more clinical and substitute Kolo Muani ensured they will defend their crown against Argentina and Lionel Messi at Lusail Stadium on Sunday when he turned in Kylian Mbappe's deflected shot 11 minutes from time.

    Good morning!

France have kept their chances of defending their World Cup title alive after ending Morocco's fairytale run.

The 2018 World Cup winners are the first team to reach back-to-back finals since Brazil in 1994, 1998 and 2002. France could also become the first team to retain the trophy since Pele's Brazil did it in 1958 and 1962.

But Argentina and Lionel Messi stand in their way.

What a final it promises to be.

Stay tuned as we bring you all the reaction from France's victory and look ahead to Sunday's final.
