  3. We are 'aiming for trophies' - Ten Hagpublished at 22:39 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-1 Everton

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on Marcus Rashford: "He is in good form and on a good run, keep it going. If he keeps focus, concentration and the good work. If he keeps investing in training and games, I am convinced he can keep it going.

"It was a game with a lot of tackles from both teams, we are happy to win this game and really happy to get into the next round."

On Everton: "I think their performance was really good, they played brave on the front foot and they went forwards. The audience got the perfect game, a good show and we are happy with the win."

"I know Manchester United are always aiming for trophies and we are going for that. We cannot force this and have to focus on the next game, not focus on trophies, that is far away. We have to work on the team and development."

On whether the players are equipped to win trophies: "I think we will have that, we can fight and fight back if necessary. We can act and stay composed so we have resilience. We have good skills in the team to win games and win prizes."

  5. 'We can't play pretty, so need to give 200%'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton defender Conor Coady: "We are in a bad way, bad place and everyone wants to get out of it. We came here with a plan and stuck to it. To lose the game to an own goal and penalty, it is gutting.

"We are not enjoying it and need to get out of it quickly. The manager is fantastic with all of us, outstanding, and he understands the football club. We need to keep listening to him and need to keep fighting for him everyday. That is what we will do as a team."

On 'sack the board' banners: "As football players, that is not our domain. We focus on trying to get results, we love this football club and we need to keep fighting. At the minute, we are not a team that can play pretty football but we go out there and give 200%."

  6. Iwobi injury 'looked bad'published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-1 Everton

    Everton

More from Everton boss Frank Lampard: "We had spirit and bravery to play. We didn't concede spaces to Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford and managed to get upfield at pace. We went 1-0 down here with our form this week, but we have been to Manchester twice recently and got a draw against City - one of the best teams in the world - and should have got something tonight."

On Alex Iwobi injury: "It felt and looked bad, we are hoping it is ankle ligament damage and not more."

  7. 'My future is not under my control'published at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard, speaking on ITV: "I think we deserved better. The players were very, very good in a sense of organisation, the game plan, the work ethic. Things which should be basics in football but people question them when you have a performance like we did the other night.

"We were really good. We had the better chances I think. Good chances for us and a goal disallowed. Marcus Rashford was probably the difference between the teams. A top individual talent can do that to you."

On his future: "That's not under my control. It's not for me to focus on that. It's for me to focus on what I saw tonight and that was a performance that every manager wants with the attitude of the team, and the focus. The focus now is Southampton.

"This league can change very quickly and when you're in a difficult run you have to work really hard to get out of it but it can change.

"I don't want to talk about my future, I only want to talk about the players and how well they played. My focus is on this team and getting a result against Southampton."

On the fans reaction: "When the players perform with the spirit of an Everton player, the fans will react to that. Even in defeat and that says a lot. We can't harp on too much about the fans, I don't want to hear that talk about the fans too much in a football sense.

"The game next week is at Goodison and we need to make the fans feel about the team like they did tonight - and then go out and try to win the game."

  8. 'Everton have to go on and win some matches now'published at 22:22 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-1 Everton

    ITV

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane on ITV, speaking about Everton: "Frank Lampard will have been encouraged by the performance tonight. They've got to take that tenacity and character into the next game though. They showed it against Manchester City, and when you're expecting to beaten and sit in and take something. They have to go on and win some football matches now. They've got to get positive results on the pressure will keep building.

"Sometimes it is easier away from away, especially with the protests against the board. The players have to show some character and bravery at home. Courage is not about hitting people all the time, it is about wanting the ball when you don't want it. It is OK coming to Old Trafford and getting some plaudits in defeat, it is about what you do at home. They have shown enough tonight. to say listen 'there are worse teams than us in the Premier League'. They have to play five at the back."

Former England striker Ian Wright on Everton: "Amadou Onana played well and Abdoulaye Doucoure played somewhere near where I've seen him at his best. They've got to get Dominic Calvert-Lewin on and get the ball in the box. They should defend like this, and keep it tight. If they can get Demari Gray going, be defensively solid and be a bit better in the attacking third and get crosses in the box for Calvert-Lewin to attack then who knows? I felt like what I saw tonight."

Tonight is not going to paper over the cracks but it will just give them a little bit of a shot in the arm going into next week. It was a bit of a free hit tonight with it being a cup game and no one was expecting anything.

It's next week, I don't need to rally the fans because they know how important that game is.

    FT: Man Utd 3-1 Everton

    ITV

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane on Marcus Rashford: "The beauty of tonight, is that is what I expect from him. I'm not surprised by his performance tonight. He is becoming one of main players for Manchester United. Can he get them back to competing for trophies?

"He is taking responsibility. I expect goals and assists from him every week now, he is obviously playing with confidence. He is going to go past you in one-on-one situations. You can't be too critical of the Everton defenders."

On Everton: "They're under a bit of pressure but I thought they did well, they didn't panic after they conceded so early on. They got back into the game twice - one was offside - so they're still fighting for each other as a team. Hopefully things get better for them."

On his form: "In terms of performances, it's probably the best that I've been so I feel good on the pitch, I'm getting into positions and areas to score goals. If I keep creating chances, I feel like I'll keep scoring."

On winning a trophy: "That's the aim, that's why we do what we do and why we work so hard. We want to be in finals and the biggest games. Ultimately, we want to be win silverware and a trophy. Hopefully this season we get a chance to do that."

"He knows exactly what he is doing. He's had a break and he's fit. The club is starting to turn a corner in terms of where they are going. He is one of the main reasons behind what they are doing."

  16. 'A response from Everton'published at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    FT: Man Utd 3-1 Everton

    Alan Stubbs
Former Everton defender on BBC Radio Merseyside

The most important thing for Everton tonight is that there has been a response from the players.

The Everton fans are showing their appreciation because they know the players put a lot of effort in today. If they hadn't, the fans would have left.

Everton were in this game for long periods. If they are going to get themselves out of the situation they're in now, one thing they are going to need is the fans.

The players take the knocks when they don't perform but there was a lot for them to take from tonight. This game was not important to a certain extent, the performance was important.

Next Saturday, 3pm, Southampton. Huge game.
