This is not great for Alex Iwobi.

The Everton man went over on his ankle as Tyrell Malacia slid in to win the ball and was immediately in agony.

Manchester United's Antony celebrates scoring against EvertonImage source, Getty Images

Trying to forget how much Utd paid for Antony but just seems yet another winger with no pace who can't go past anybody?

    Kevin, Leics

Antony's agent is a miracle worker. Absolutely nothing about Antony can explain in what world he is a £90m player...ludicrous money for a poor signing.

    Anon

United have to sign a striker this window. Martial has struggled in front of goal and Antony, despite being on the scoresheet, hasn't had a good game since before the World Cup. We are so reliant on Rashford.

  5. 'I would stick with De Gea'published at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    Man Utd 1-1 Everton

    Glenn Murray
Former Crystal Palace striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I would stick with David de Gea going forward if I was Manchester United. If you take away tonight's mistake, that can happen to anyone.

He had a shaky few years in the middle of his United career but he is settling down again. He is getting a better defence in front of him now and more protection.

I would stick. I don't think there are many better out there.

    HT: Man Utd 1-1 Everton

    Kevin Campbell
Former Everton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It will be vital for Erik ten Hag and this squad to win silverware. It means a hell of a lot and the taste of success is incredible and it does propel you forward.

The longer you go without a trophy, the harder it gets because everyone else improves and upgrades.

The way Manchester United are going this season they will definitely be looking at silverware.

  10. 'Vialli's legacy is huge'published at 21:01 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    Carlo Cudicini
Former Chelsea goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It has been a very difficult day for me personally, but also for everyone at Chelsea. Gianluca Vialli left a big legacy at the club. I'm sure it is a sad day for football fans all around the world.

Everyone is well aware of what he achieved on the football pitch, but having had the pleasure to meet him as a person, it is very difficult to accept that happens. Life can be very cruel.

He played a very important part in what has become the best league in the world. What he gave to football in Italy and then here in England, he has been very successful. The legacy he's left has been huge.

He was very big for Italy, having such a big player making in the Premier League alongside Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Di Matteo.

He is such an iconic player in Italy. Generally all the fans in Italy always liked him. He had such a great personality and aura. He was a very clever man.

He always had such a positive energy. He was always ready for a laugh, joke and banter. He had a sneaky way of telling you things. He had a big aura. You could feel his presence as soon as he walked into a room.

Everton manager Frank Lampard, speaking to ITV, about the death of Gianluca Vialli: "It's a really sad day. I've been watching a lot of the outpouring of words from people who knew him and played with him. He touched so many people's lives.

"I missed him with my career at Chelsea but when I did meet him as a player and manager at Chelsea, he stood out as a man of class, dignity and warmth.

"It's a tough one today. Regards to his family and all the people he touched."

Meanwhile, a bit of Everton news from elsewhere...

Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas are exploring the possibility of cancelling Dele Alli's contract five months into his season-long loan.

The midfielder, 26, has struggled to rediscover his form in Turkey, playing just nine games and scoring two goals.

Alli agreed a guaranteed £1.94m for the loan plus a maximum of £8,400 per game.

BBC Sport understands a major stumbling block is paying off the £1.14m remaining on the deal.

  14. 'De Gea like an outfield player in goal'published at 20:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    HT: Man Utd 1-1 Everton

    ITV

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane on David de Gea and Everton's goal: "It is a shocking mistake from an international goalkeeper. It was like carry-on football. It looks like he's had a few too many drinks.

"It is almost like the goalkeeper has been sent off and an outfield player has gone in goal and he doesn't know what to do. It is an horrendous mistake."

  15. 'Everton need to tighten up a bit'published at 20:53 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    HT: Man Utd 1-1 Everton

    Kevin Campbell
Former Everton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you're going in a goal down you're going in 'come on, lads, what's going on?', but Frank Lampard will be able to put a positive spin on it now.

Everton have shown signs of life. They will need to tighten up a little bit because if Man Utd had their shooting boots on they'd be ahead.

There are opportunities to hit United on the break with Demari Gray though.

  16. Everton 'worthy' of the scorelinepublished at 20:51 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    HT: Man Utd 1-1 Everton

    Alan Stubbs
Former Everton defender on BBC Radio Merseyside

Everton have contributed as much as Manchester United in that first half. They've had to sit back and soak up the pressure at times but they've looked a threat on the break, especially through Demarai Gray.

More that United cutting them open, Everton have contributed to their own downfall with some sloppy passing. I think that comes down to confidence.

Overall, I think there are a lot of positives for Everton and they are certainly in this tie. They've been worthy of this 1-1 scoreline.

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:48 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    Man Utd 1-1 Everton

All square after a very watchable first half.

Everton responded to a poor start by levelling through Conor Coady, but big question marks over David de Gea's goalkeeping there.

babyboomer: It is as if Man United expect to win whereas Everton want to win. A lot more bite & desire in Everton's tackling while United players are standing waiting for the ball, meaning that passes are going in front & missing them.

Tom: Does anyone think Fernandes will ever have an influential game for United?
