    Man Utd 1-0 Everton

A lovely flick in the centre of the park from skipper Bruno Fernandes sets goalscorer Antony on his way.

But the Brazilian gives the ball away on the edge of the box and Everton defenders breathe a big sigh of relief.

Everton need to get on the ball and try to relieve the pressure that they're under right now.

Everton need to pull themselves together sharpish.

They've barely managed to string any passes together so far.

That was awful defending from Everton.

Antony was the only Manchester United player that could have reached Marcus Rashford's cross and the Everton defence didn't cover it.

That was pretty basic and sign of a team devoid of self-belief. No-one can help those players now. They have to drag themselves out of this.

    Man Utd 1-0 Everton

    Kevin Campbell
Former Everton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is confusing that Everton switched from a back three/five against Manchester City to four against Brighton.

When you are away from home against Manchester City to be able to defend deep is one thing, but when you go home and it's a winnable game the onus is on you to attack.

Frank Lampard has probably changed it because he wants to go more offensively, and apart from six crazy second-half minutes there probably wasn't a lot in the game. If you concede three goals in six minutes you've got no chance.

The consistency levels have just been like a rollercoaster for the last four or five years. It has been terrible.

  6. CLOSE!published at 5 mins

    Man Utd 1-0 Everton

Everton heads have dropped and they are all over the place.

United could have had a quick-fire second as Anthony Martial swivels on the edge of the box and laces a shot which drifts just wide of the post.

It had Jordan Pickford worried, diving at full stretch.

Marcus Rashford has been in fantastic form, finds himself in a one-on-one with Ben Godfrey. The defender gives him too much room and Rashford puts the ball right in behind the Everton defenders and Antony slides in to tap in.

Not the start Everton wanted and this is where you see the character in the team.

    Antony

    Oh deary me.

What was Alan Stubbs saying there?

Everton have conceded in the first three minutes, excellent wing play from the in-form Marcus Rashford, standing up Ben Godfrey then outpacing him.

Rashford rolls the ball across the six yard box for Antony to slide in and pop the ball into an open net. He couldn't miss.

A real nightmare start for Everton at the Theatre of Dreams.

It's important that Everton start the game well and don't conceded early because it's a long night.

  11. 'Lampard the type of person to try solve an issue'published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    Man Utd 0-0 Everton

    Shaun Wright-Phillips
Former Man City winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Frank Lampard has always been a player and person off the person that won't run away from things from not going well.

He is the type of person to try and solve it or try and make the situation a lot better.

He has inherited a lot of problems. They've got injuries and there are individual mistakes, which you can't really coach out of players.

I've seen them play a few times, particularly against Manchester City, and they look like they shouldn't be in the position they are. The problem they have is keeping that performance throughout all the other games.

If they go with that same mentality they will cause a lot of teams problems. They just have to be difficult to beat because they have the players to spring counter-attacks. From there you can build your confidence up a bit and kick on.

And don't give the ball away in dangerous area.

Alex Iwobi does just that, Antony picking off the loose ball but Toffees shirts retreat to snuff out the danger.

Everton really need to keep it tight for the first 20 minutes or so then build from there.

An early goal for the hosts and it could get messy.

James Smith: Man Utd using the Charlton game to their advantage! Strongest team tonight and then let some players have a rest on Tuesday.

Mark Taylor: Nice to see Erik has picked a first team, a few years ago there would have been a sprinkling of fringe players for the FA Cup.

  16. 'Not a decisive game for Lampard'published at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

    Man Utd 0-0 Everton

    Kevin Campbell
Former Everton and Arsenal striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is a big game for Everton, but I think it is a welcome distraction.

I don't think it is a decisive game for Frank Lampard. We all know what the problems are at Everton.

You can keep repeating the same problems and pull the trigger and sack another manager, but the real problem doesn't get addressed. No foundations have been built in the last 10 decade.

They are singing against the Glazer family, who are assessing their ownership of the club and have mentioned selling it for the first time.

  19. 'There will always be pressure'published at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2023

Man Utd v Everton (20:00 GMT)

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard, speaking on ITV: "Maybe Crystal Palace at Goodison last year was as tough as it's been because of the jeopardy of the game. That's the situation of where I did come into and we have to keep working, there will always be pressure.

"Obviously there has been pressure - and talk and noise. That happens in the Premier League, it happens in football, it happens at Everton.

"Fortunately, I'm tough to that and I get on with my job. The job tonight is to play a really strong team and try to get through to the next round.

On Dominic Calvert-Lewin: "Dominic felt some fatigue during the game against Brighton a bit and specifically the morning afterwards.

"We had a long chat with the medical team and if he started the game and played 90 minutes, we've learnt from history that that is where he has sometimes had issues. We would normally have started the game but not tonight."

On whether FA Cup is a priority: "It's the FA Cup and there is pride and there's history, and we're Everton. We've coming to Old Trafford to play Manchester United, I want to see a performance.

"You respect the fact that they're a great team with great players and a great coach but we want to perform well. That's my concern."
