  1. 'Alvarez is a different beast'published at 17:05 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 2-0 Chelsea

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Alvarez's penalty was not the best struck in the world but it doesn't matter when it hits the back of the net.

He gets enough on it and Kepa goes the right way. He gets a hand to it and probably could do better but Alvarez won't care when he has just put his team 2-0 up.

As you would expect, the player who has returned from the World Cup has come back a different beast. Pep Guardiola will nurture that and City will have another superstar on their hands.

  2. goal

GOAL - Aston Villa 1-0 Stevenagepublished at 17:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Morgan Sanson

What a great time to score your first goal for the club.

It's Morgan Sanson with the smart finish but the one-touch build-up leading to the chance was very impressive.

    A great team goal.

  3. Postpublished at 17:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 0-0 Stevenage

Another chance for Villa, another wild attempt by Philippe Coutinho who is convinced his shot came off a white shirt but referee Graham Scott is not interested.

Half an hour on the clock. Stevenage can be pleased with their efforts so far.

  4. 'A good use of VAR'published at 17:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 2-0 Chelsea

    Izzy Christiansen
Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

That's a good use of VAR.

Havertz couldn't win the header against Laporte and he stuck his arm out and hoped that no one would see it, but they have.

Rob: Just don't understand our tactics under Potter, play 90% of your football in your own third is going to lead to mistakes and no goals, no attacking quality AT ALL since he took charge.

Jamie: Same manager, same decisions why are we surprised? Another loss coming. Potter Out.

  6. goal

GOAL - Manchester City 2-0 Chelseapublished at 30 mins

    Julian Alvarez (penalty)

World Cup winner Julian Alvarez gets to take the penalty and doubles Manchester City's lead.

Kepa Arrizabalaga goes the correct way, to his right, but the ball creeps in just inside the post and City are 2-0 ahead and cruising.

It's looking another miserable day for Chelsea.

  7. 'Villa need to pick themselves up'published at 17:01 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 0-0 Stevenage

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Villa have started on a low tempo. It is hard to pick yourself up from that.

Stevenage will be looking at this and should be thinking they can get a goal.

Villa need to pick themselves up because it is hard to recover in a game like this if you go a goal down.

  8. PENALTY to Manchester Citypublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Given.

  9. Penalty all day long'published at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 1-0 Chelsea

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

It's a penalty all day long. Havertz sticks his arm out and basically punches it away.

  10. Postpublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 1-0 Chelsea

Kai Havertz is going to be in a lot of trouble here. He's punched the ball away when defending a corner. The referee has been told to have a look at the incident on the pitchside monitor.

  11. Postpublished at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 1-0 Chelsea

Has Kai Havertz handled in the penalty area? Manchester City want a penalty. It's being checked.

  12. 'Fans aren't happy with Villa'published at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 0-0 Stevenage

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

You can hear the crowd. They aren't happy with Villa at the moment.

They aren't at the point of booing yet but they are just wanting them to move more and be lively. To cause more problems but they aren't seeing that yet.

  13. Postpublished at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 0-0 Stevenage

Villa need to move the ball quicker. Max Clark embarrasses Leon Bailey as he nicks the ball off his toes before running into a cul-de-sac.

Villa have nothing to show for their 78%.

  14. 'Absolutely outstanding'published at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 1-0 Chelsea

    Izzy Christiansen
Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

    That was absolutely outstanding.

The way he's just wrapped his foot around that and it's just swerved away from Kepa - there's too much pace on the ball for the goalkeeper to have any chance of saving that.

The way it glides into the top corner, I bet he hits them like that all day in training.

  15. 'Mahrez with a worldie'published at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 1-0 Chelsea

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

It's an absolute worldie from Mahrez. He picks his spot but he still has to score it. It's got the whip on it, the pace. Kepa has no chance. What a way to stick your team in the lead. A beautiful free kick.

That's the beauty of having players in your team who can produce something special out of nothing. Mahrez whipping the ball into the top corner like that, it just sets the game alive.

  16. Postpublished at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 0-0 Stevenage

Stevenage are giving this a right good go.

Space opens up for Morgan Sanson but it's blocked by a Stevenage shirt.

We're past the halfway point of the first half. Steve Evans, who managed Emi Martinez at Rotherham, will be pleased with what he is seeing.

  17. goal

GOAL - Man City 1-0 Chelseapublished at 24 mins

    Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez scored against Chelsea on Thursday and he has done so again here today.

City get a free-kick 25 yards from goal and it is superb technique from Mahrez as the free-kick flies over the wall, zooms into the top corner and Kepa Arrizabalaga unable to keep it out.

  18. Postpublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 0-0 Chelsea

Hakim Ziyech goes down in the Manchester City penalty area. Nothing given on the field, and nothing changed by those in the VAR room.

  19. 'Should have squared it'published at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 0-0 Chelsea

    Izzy Christiansen
Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Palmer should have squared that to Alvarez, that was my initial reaction.

It was an excellent run in behind and he's committed the keeper - he just needs to pass to Alvarez for a tap-in.

  20. 'Lucky'published at 16:51 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 0-0 Chelsea

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Kepa got lucky. He has got to come and get this. He made the decision to come then backs off and just about gets away with it in the end.
