  2. 'Special day for everyone at Arsenal'published at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2023

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Very emotional. It is a very special day for everybody who feels the way that we feel about this football club. We talked about the opportunity and that we have to play with a level of enjoyment because we have the power to make people happy. I'm sure we made them proud and very happy tonight.

"To play in this stadium against this team with the courage, the determination, the quality that we showed, it was very impressive from the boys. But we showed the other face when we had to dig in, we needed some big moments from Aaron [Ramsdale].

There were some great defensive moments as well to do that and it's a shame because we didn't capitalise as well on another two or three big chances that we had. But overall, happy about the performance and the victory.

On Ramsdale making the difference: "He was the difference when we needed him. In the opponent's box, we didn't finalise the actions as well as we should have. They have the quality, when you look at Tottenham's front three - that is always in the back of your mind."

On being eight points clear: "It means that the way we are playing has taken us this far and we should never forget that. We have to continue playing this way or better because the team still has a lot of things that can be improved collectively and individually and if we focus on that, I'm sure we'll be fine."

On the Aaron Ramsdale incident at full-time: "He's fine, he's fine."

On Mykhaylo Mudryk signing for Chelsea: "I'm very happy with the players that we have."

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte to Sky Sports: "It was difficult to come back after we conceded two goals. When we conceded the first, we had the possibility to level the game with Sonny and the keeper made a fantastic save. Then they scored the second goal. It could have killed everybody, but not my players as in the second half we tried with a big effort to score and create problems for Arsenal.

"The keeper made fantastic saves today. Arsenal is a difficult opponent now, like Man City. Both teams are going to contend for the Premier League title.

"We played against a strong team but at the same time I’ve not got great disappointment for the commitment of my players. They showed great will and desire to try and come back. Sometimes in the past we did, but today their keeper was really good.

"Arsenal showed to be a really good team. It wasn’t easy for them to play against us in this atmosphere but they have a great balance and suffer in the right moments. They showed great resilience in the second half.

“When a team does this, it means they are ready to fight to win the title with Man City. They are the only two teams who can fight for the Premier League this season.”

On Tottenham’s top-four chances: “We have to continue to work really hard and we will see our position at the end of the season. Be it Champions League or Europa League. Teams like Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United, Newcastle, also Brighton and Brentford. It is really difficult because every team can spend money and even the middle or lower teams have international players.”

On incident with Ramsdale: “I didn’t see it. I only see a big confusion and you are telling me now what happened. If it happened, it is not good. We always have to show respect for an opponent and the players. I don’t like it.”

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte talking to BBC Match of the Day: "We wanted to deliver and get a result for our fans because we know how important this type of game is for them. This game was also important for us and to improve the table. I am disappointed with the result.

"We started well and started in a strong way and then we conceded a goal. Football is strange and sometimes a situation happens that is very difficult to explain. We had a good chance to equalise with Sonny but the Arsenal keeper made a fantastic save. The second goal could kill everybody.

"I have to be happy with the reaction. They stayed there with their head and mind, and I asked for that. In this sort of game you can lose the mind and concede many goals but instead we created chances. We continued to have a good balance and didn't concede great chances. We have to be disappointed and for our fans. Arsenal deserve to stay top of the table and fight to win the Premier League. They and Manchester City are the two title contenders."

On the incident at full-time: "In this situation, the final result effects everybody. I have to try and have the right consideration. If you are to get emotional, you can be angry for the bad result. In this moment you have to be good to analyse the situation. I'm not disappointed about the performance and commitment and desire and fight they showed. We did it. That is sometimes enough. Sometimes it is not enough."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta talking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was great to watch, a terrific match. We had some very good moments. We showed a lot of belief, determination and quality to show the way we wanted to play and dominate the game. It is never easy to play this team, especially in this stadium.

"We want to do that [show authority from the start] but what you can do against this team is very different. We imposed on the game and were very determined and really intense. The willingness to regain the ball very quickly was really good."

On wanting to end Arsenal's bad record at Tottenham: "Those experiences have to help you to improve. Normally you learn more from difficult moments than from good moments. It was a different game and different moment in the season. You have to go out there and do it and that was the most complicated part."

On Tottenham second-half threat: "They have come back from difficult results, particularly at home. If you look at their quality in the top three. if you don't do anything right they will punish you."

On the incident at full-time: "I haven't seen anything and I don't want to, I just want to talk about football and the beautiful game we just played. Tomorrow we can review that."

How significant is it? "It was an opportunity. We said to enjoy it. We have a job, we can make a lot of people happy and I'm sure a lot of Arsenal fans are proud tonight."

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard to BBC Sport: "It feels brilliant. It was about time we won here. It was a great game, especially in the first half. We dominated and controlled everything.

"The second half was a bit more open. They pushed for a goal but we defended well, so a good game.

"Last year and the year before we played some good football here but weren't sharp enough in key moments. But we showed a different side today and showed how much we have improved.

"I'm really happy for the team and the fans. I know how much it will mean to them. But we have to stay humble and we know we can improve."

On his goal: "It is a good one. I had a similar shot before so was very glad to see it go in."

On the incident with Ramsdale at final whistle: "From what I heard, a fan attacked him in the crowd. I have to see it again. It is a shame that this happens on the football pitch."

A PFA spokesperson on Aaron Ramsdale being hit by a fan at the end: “Violence towards players is completely unacceptable. These types of incidents are happening far too often.

“Players have a right to be safe in their place of work. When a player is attacked, we expect the laws and regulations that are in place to protect players to be properly enforced.

“As the players’ union, we treat this as a priority issue. We will continue working with the authorities to demand that players and staff are better protected in their place of work.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta talking to Sky Sports, asked about what he liked: "Everything. I loved the way we played and the courage we showed to come here and play. Doing our job we can make a lot of people happy, and I'm sure we've made Arsenal fans very happy.

"It is not for me. Everything we ask, they are so willing to try and do. They are a terrific group of players. I think today we went another step. We won last season in big stadiums, but the way we won today was really pleasing to watch.

"It shows not only determination and courage but you have to have the belief and quaity to do it against this team. That is absolutely down to the players.

"We were really aggressive. We were really intense against the high press. We won so many balls and duels. They created some openings, they are a dangerous team, but we did a lot of good work today."

On Murdyk joining Chelsea: "I am very proud to have the players we have. We always want to try to improve the squad. The club are the first to try and improve the players we have. We have to have some discipline and be consistent in the targets we have. We can make the players better - let's focus on that."

Do they need extra bodies? "We had some injuries, long-term injuries and it's not helpful but we can focus on tomorrow. Train better, train better and review the game. We will try to improve the team. There are always a few parties involved. The club are willing and they have my support and I have their support."

On the incident at the end: "I haven't watched it. I watched a great game of football and that's what I want to talk about."

Tottenham defender Eric Dier to Sky Sports: "We conceded two poor goals. The first was a bit unfortunate but I don't think we started too badly. Then they got the first goal and had the better chances in the first half.

"Second half, we came out and played really well. We could've easily got back into the game. Ramsdale made a lot of good saves and we are just missing that goal. If we get the first, then who knows what happens?

"We had spells of possession in their half at 0-0, we just didn't really create any chances. Both goals are poor. They were the better team but I don't think it is as clear as the result shows.

"Obviously it's not what you want at your own stadium, especially against a rival. But it is what it is. They are a very good side, they are top for a reason. We just have to move on."

On the incident between Aaron Ramsdale and a Spurs fan after the final whistle: "I didn't see it but obviously it is unacceptable and it shouldn't have happened. There's nothing more I can say."

Utterly gutless performance from Spurs. You can play badly but show a bit of passion, this has been pathetic and limp from start to finish. Get Conte out and give it to someone else who might stick around to start the long overdue rebuild in the summer.

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to Sky Sports: “We deserved the two-goal lead and maybe deserved more. We played the way we wanted to play in the first half and got the deserved lead.”

On his saves from Kane and Son: “That’s what I’m there to do. The manager also mentioned that in the last few north London derbies we haven’t kept a clean sheet, so that spurred me on a bit.”

On the incident with a fan at full-time: “The Spurs fans gave me some throughout the game. I was giving some back. The people I did give it to greeted it in sportsmanlike terms but one fan tried to give me a little punch on the back.

“It is a shame as it is just a game of football at the end of the day. Both sets of players tried to bring me away but thankfully nothing too drastic happened. It is a sour taste but I’m sure we will enjoy it when we go back into the dressing room.”

On the eight-point lead over Manchester City: "We are in a good position, there is no doubt about that. We've got to stay humble and keep working hard. You saw the difference in the first and second half today so we have things to improve. We have to keep going."
