Chelsea v Crystal Palace (14:00 GMT)

Chelsea have won their past 10 Premier League games against Crystal Palace.

In their league history they have only ever won more consecutively against West Bromwich Albion (12 between 1989 and 2011), and Sunderland (11 between 2002 and 2010).

But Chelsea boss Graham Potter has never won at home to Crystal Palace, drawing one and losing three in charge of Swansea and Brighton.

Patrick Vieira says Crystal Palace need "more physical presence on the field" as the club continues to look at options in the transfer window.

Palace have been linked with a move for Club Bruges' 18-year-old defensive midfielder Noah Mbamba and are also reported to be scouting for cover at right-back.

"I always say we want to improve the squad and we know the profile that we want. We just have to keep working and hopefully then we will bring in a couple of new faces," Vieira said.

"We are looking at the squad we have. I always talk about the experience and the physical side of the game.

"We need more physical presence on the field, so these are the kind of profiles we have identified."

  5. 'Not close, not bidding - and no desire to sell'published at 13:42 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2023

    Newcastle v Fulham (14:00 GMT)

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe says the Magpies are engaged in a "watching brief" in the January transfer market with no major incomings or outgoings expected imminently.

The cautious approach is in sharp contrast to this time last year when Howe brought in several January signings including Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Chris Wood in, moves that helped stave off relegation from the Premier League.

“We are working hard at the moment in staying very much in contact with the market and players but we are not imminently close to signing anybody, we are not actively bidding for players at the moment," said Howe, who ruled out a rumoured loan move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

"January is not the ideal time to recruit – there’s a much smaller pool of players available and prices are potentially higher as well because of that.

"Last year I thought we did exceptionally well in a difficult month but this year we are in a different position and we want to add real quality to the group if we are going to do anything so it’s very much got to be the right player."

Newcastle sit third in the Premier League and are into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. Howe, whose side host Fulham on Sunday, indicated he is happy with his first-team squad - and is not keen to lose anyone to moves elsewhere.

“There’s not a huge desire in me to sell anyone this window but it always depends on what’s presented to you – something can come left-field that the club thinks is a good deal to do," he added.

"Certainly my intention is to develop what we have rather than lose anybody – I don’t think we’re at the stage where we are overloaded with quality or with numbers."

    Newcastle v Fulham (14:00 GMT)

Newcastle are vying to equal a club record of 14 top-flight games without defeat, set in 1950 and equalled between May and November 2011.

The Magpies could also keep five consecutive top-flight clean sheets for the first time in their history.

Eddie Howe's side have conceded just five league goals at St James' Park this season, with three of those coming against Manchester City.

  7. 'We are not changing anything from our aim'published at 13:38 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2023

    Newcastle v Fulham (14:00 GMT)

    SilvaImage source, PA Media

Marco Silva says Fulham will not change their goals for the season despite a stellar opening to the campaign.

The Cottagers sit sixth in the Premier League but remaining in the top flight remains Silva’s focus.

"Of course we are in a great position in the table, but we are not here to change anything from our goals until we have achieved that, this is clear for me," Silva said.

"The goal is still at the same level, no-one in our football club will change the goals if we have not achieved it.

"Until we have achieved our target of this club remaining in the Premier League, we are not changing anything from our aim and from our ambitions.

"We are an ambitious football club, definitely. I have ambition as a manager, and my players too, but you have to be realistic.

"We are really pleased with the way we have been playing, which has achieved great results for us, but the Premier League is really tough."

    Newcastle v Fulham (14:00 GMT)

These teams are fourth and sixth place respectively - which nobody can have been expecting this season.

The Magpies sit nine points behind leaders Arsenal, so their focus is surely on a Champions League place now.

Could Fulham be considered their rivals for the top four? A win today would put them only one point behind the Magpies.

Newcastle are looking to complete the league double over Fulham for the first time since 2007-08, while they're also looking to win three in a row against the Cottagers for the first time ever.

Fulham are winless in their past six Premier League away games against Newcastle (D3 L3) since a 1-0 victory in May 2009. Their past two visits to St James' Park have finished level.

  11. 'We have to recover from disappointment and try to be positive'published at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2023

Chelsea v Crystal Palace (14:00 GMT)

    PotterImage source, PA Media

Graham Potter is trying to find the positives as he looks to get Chelsea’s season back on track.

The Blues, who have won only one of their last nine league games, are hampered by a lengthening injury list and will be without new signing Joao Felix for three matches.

“Of course [we are] disappointed because he came here to play,” said Potter. “You saw his quality so to lose him for three games is a big blow but we just have to deal with it.

“We have to recover from the disappointment and then try to be positive, move forward and take a home game on. It’s another London derby against a team with dangerous players so we have to be good and be prepared.”

With Denis Zakaria joining a growing list of injury absentees, Potter admitted it has been difficult to try and pinpoint why they keep happening.

“We’re looking all the time and we’re going over how they’re happening and trying to evaluate the whole thing,” he said. “Sometimes it’s difficult when you come in halfway through the season to know how they’ve happened but I can sense it’s a bit of bad luck.

“The nature of them, they’re different problems, so it’s tricky. It’s not like we’ve been over-training or anything like that. We just need to get to the bottom of it.”

Chelsea are seeking to avoid four consecutive league and cup defeats for the first time since a run of six in 1993 under Glenn Hoddle.

The Blues have lost two of their past three Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge, as many losses as they suffered in their previous 21 home fixtures.

Graham Potter could become the first Chelsea manager since Tommy Docherty in 1961-62 to lose his first two home London derbies in the league.

It was too little, too late for Newcastle when they brought their big guns off the bench to chase the game against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, but I don't think that defeat has any bearing on their league form.

Eddie Howe's side bounced back to pummel Leicester in the Carabao Cup in midweek and they are on a high after reaching the semi-finals - their fans will be too.

Fulham have surprised a lot of people this season, but I think the Magpies will have too much for them. No shocks here.

    Sutton's prediction: 3-0

Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha is out of contract at the end of the season...

I think Wilfried Zaha is probably going to leave Crystal Palace. I'm happy to be proven wrong because he has done so well for them.

If that does happen and he goes away on a free, you can't say he has not had good service for Crystal Palace. I'm sure he will be ready for a new challenge if they do decide to bring that one forward.

Chelsea will pay tribute to their late manager Gianluca Vialli, who passed away last week, before this game and it is going to be an emotional afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

Palace are so inconsistent that we are getting to the stage where I might as well say they will win or lose every time because when I try to call it based on their previous result or performance, I get it wrong each time.

    Prediction: 2-1

There will be a minute's applause before kick-off for former Chelsea striker and manager Gianluca Vialli, who died last week at the age of 58.

The Italian, who was at Chelsea from 1996 to 2000, had pancreatic cancer.

This is the Blues' first home game since his death.

On Chelsea debutant Joao Felix's red card against Fulham

There is a lot of uncertainty around the club. He's coming to play his first game. He is going to do some good things and a lot of fans will have eyes on him. Did he have an unbelievable game? No, he didn't because Chelsea didn't.

Let's talk about the challenge. He endangered the player and had no intention to put his foot away. He went high on the challenge and it didn't give the referee any alternative.

I really do feel for Graham Potter at the moment because we all agree that he is a really good manager. Things are not working out how you would want it to be and expect to work out.

There's been a lot of changes in personnel and formation change during the games. He doesn't seem to know his strongest team and system to play.

There's a lot of injuries and personnel not available who would be first choice and it makes it look so difficult. He definitely needs more time. If he will get the formula he wants then you'll see results improving.
