Katvik: Wow, these are indeed two mid-table teams.…I don't think I have every seen such a bad Chelsea and Liverpool at the same time…

Sam: Although they’ve been poor, very worrying seeing key senior players being left out for teenagers and fringe players. I hope Klopp isn’t losing the dressing room because I love him but the performances are increasingly looking like he has.

Liverpool have really come out swinging.

Cody Gakpo is found again in the box, this time with the ball at his feet. His low shot is blocked, though.

All these comments on Mane and the press. We have had Diaz and Jota both out for a long time. They are both excellent at the press. But it's midfield where the problem lies.

    Fozzy, Surrey

People forget that Diaz, Jota and Bobby have been out for weeks and they were the best players last season. Add an aging midfield = poor LFC.

Cody Gakpo just keeps sending efforts over the bar!

A free-kick is chipped into the box, met by Stefan Bajcetic to send the ball back into the middle and then nodded over by the Dutch forward.

Mo Salah was behind him and free to convert. If he shouted, Gakpo ignored him.

@Jonny 13.05 Mane had a year left on his contract but wanted away. I suspect because of the way Salah performs selfishly sometimes. I'd witnessed Mane become increasingly frustrated during games. I wasn't surprised when he expressed his desire to leave. Liverpool's best striker and a great team player, unlike Salah.

Maybe it's the Salah effect of getting a massive pay rise and then just not performing anymore - bit like many players when they say they are worth more than anyone else. It's not good optics to the rest of the team. As good as Salah was it's a team game.

Liverpool have come out at least trying to mean business.

Mohamed Salah gets the ball at his feet on the right of the Chelsea box but he can't buy himself a yard to shoot and has to send the ball back to allow the build to begin again.

Ryan: Why can’t Potter just be crazy and do an Arteta and play his new signings all together straightaway? You sense that all teams know how Chelsea will play week in, week out and players’ confidence is sub zero.

David Moyes pays a lengthy tribute to David Gold in his programme notes - but he can hardly avoid talking about the situation West Ham find themselves in, third bottom of the table, with one point from seven games.

"We are halfway through this Premier League season and we are fully aware that we have to produce better results," he says.

    He's not wrong.

Liverpool's first and only shot on target in this match came in the 39th minute, through Thiago. Only against Newcastle (0) have they had fewer shots on target in a Premier League home game this season.

The Reds have lost each of their last three Premier League games when level at half time, having lost just two of the 21 games they were level at the break in beforehand (W12 D7).

  15. Have Saints turned the corner under Jones?published at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

    Southampton v Aston Villa (15:00

Harry Tizard, The Saints Score, external

After a tough start under former Luton Town boss Nathan Jones, Southampton have secured three consecutive wins, each in a different competition.

However, it still does not change the precarious position they find themselves in the Premier League. Still at the bottom, Saints must not allow their momentum to flatline.

Level on points with Everton and West Ham, who are both going through a tricky patch of form with managers under pressure, the teams above them will not struggle forever.

Both of those clubs are reinforced with squads superior to Southampton's. This means they are likely to avoid the drop, with Saints needing to overtake the likes of Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, who are currently outside of the bottom three.

Into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, fans have the right to dream of lifting a trophy for the first time in over a decade. However, with Newcastle United, and a possible replay of the 2017 final versus an in-form Manchester United, success is unlikely.

Remaining in the Premier League is the priority. Nobody will remember a positive cup run if it accompanies relegation.

West Ham pay tribute to their joint-chairman David Gold today.

A bona-fide East Ender and a lifelong Hammers fan, Gold passed away earlier this month.

The match programme contains a tribute to Gold from his daughters Jacqueline and Vanessa, in which they speak about his lifelong affection for the club.

Spandau Ballet's 'Gold' was being played when I walked around the stadium earlier, so that is clearly going to be part of the commemorations ahead of kick-off.

  17. Rodgers optimistic for Maddison returnpublished at 13:22 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2023

James Maddison could feature for the first time since before the World Cup when Leicester take on Brighton on Saturday.

The England midfielder has been struggling with a knee injury, and did not play at all in Qatar, but Brendan Rodgers is optimistic a return is imminent.

"He's doing very well, so we’re hoping he can be involved in the squad," said Rodgers. "Then it’s a case of picking the right moment to put him in.

"He’s trained this week and looks so, so good. We hope he can come through the last session."

Maddison's return could be vital for Rodgers, whose side have failed to pick up a point since the Premier League resumed.

"Just seeing him on the pitch this week, he’s such a gift as a player," said Rodgers.

"The confidence he gives other players, that’s when you know you've got a great player."

Liverpool need to change their whole system. Go 4-4-2, bulk out the midfield, playing Trent on the right with Gomez filling in behind. Salah and Nunez up top with their pace will cause problems. We can't just keep trying to force something that isn't working.
