  1. 'I always expect them to train well' - Frank on Raya's attitudepublished at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    Leeds v Brentford (14:00 GMT)

Thomas Frank says Brentford might be lured into the transfer market if they find a "hidden gem" but stressed he is happy with his squad.

"We are strong in every position," he said.

"If we find a hidden gem somewhere then, hopefully, we can get the player."

Bees goalkeeper David Raya has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea.

Frank, though, does not feel any of the squad will be distracted by transfer rumours.

He added: "I always expect them to train well and do well for the club.

"David Raya really cares about Brentford and the team so I can't see that him, or anyone else, isn't doing everything they can to make sure we are doing our best."

Another player linked with an exit is Sergi Canos, who Frank stressed was "a Brentford player" and still "an important member of the squad".

Brentford reached the halfway stage of our Premier League season with Saturday’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth.

And, without being arrogant about it, to have 29 points at this stage makes it all but certain that we will have a third top-flight campaign to look forward to in August.

Thomas Frank called the victory a "defining" one, because it showed that the Bees could turn up against the teams below us in the table and not just the big boys.

The match also showed that the side can cope if one of the key players is missing – on Saturday it was left-back Rico Henry who was out with an injury.

Frank simply switched from 3-5-2 to 4-3-3, slotted the versatile Vitaly Janelt into Henry’s slot and carried on as normal.

The seven-match unbeaten Premier League run is a real achievement, although newspaper headlines and fans' songs at games saying we are chasing a European place are premature.

If results continue like this but we end up not making the Europa League or Conference League, it won’t be a failure.

The last 10 years have been built on slow and steady progress and anything above last season’s 13th-place finish is success in my book.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has scored 13 goals in 17 Premier League games this season, one more than he managed in 33 appearances last season. He's scored all nine of his Premier League penalties, with only Yaya Touré having a better 100% record (11/11).

Toney scored a hat-trick the last time these two met, in a 5-2 Brentford win.

FA Cup - Leeds 1-0 Cardiff: Wilfried Gnonto scores 'sublime' volley inside 30 seconds

Ex-Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson says his former club "have unearthed a gem" in Wilfried Gnonto after the 19-year-old added to his blossoming reputation with a double against Cardiff.

Arriving in the summer from FC Zurich for £4m, the Italy winger has become a cornerstone of Leeds' attack and Robinson is delighted to see him thriving.

"There will be a lot more clubs looking at him now," said Robinson. "I don't think they expected an immediate impact in the first team when he came.

"He has pace, directness and is very intelligent for a young player. He can change the game in an instant because he always looks dangerous and a real goal threat.

"He's a young player, playing with confidence and he is fearless. I think he will be key to Leeds' results."

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin agreed, suggesting the second half of the season will be the "easiest time he will have in the Premier League".

"Defenders do not know him yet," said Nevin. "They will work out his strengths and he'll have to adapt but he can go either way with pace, vision and threat.

"They'll try to control him but it will not be easy."

  6. 'I knew it wasn’t true'published at 13:23 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

    Leeds v Brentford (14:00 GMT)

Jesse Marsch says reports that some players at Leeds are against him are incorrect and that everybody is "together".

Leeds have not won any of their last five Premier League games and currently sit 14th in the league.

It has led to reports of a lack of unity between team and manager, though Marsch says some of his players have approached him over the matter.

"A couple came together and a couple came separately - it wasn’t like they went out of their way," Marsch said.

"We interact here constantly, we are team-mates, it is how we work. We support each other always and it is a really wonderful place to be.

"I am thankful for the club and the players here - it is special. So it was fairly clear that we are together.

"I appreciated them coming to me but I knew it was there. I didn’t need to ask anyone as I knew it wasn’t true."

    Sutton's prediction: 2-2

Leeds' 5-2 defeat at Brentford in September was a real low point for their boss Jesse Marsch, who is still under pressure now.

Marsch is always bullish, win or lose, to talk his side's performances up and he is a manager who wears his heart on his sleeve.

He could do with a home win - Leeds thumped Cardiff in the FA Cup on Wednesday but they haven't managed a league victory at Elland Road since 5 November.

Brentford are dangerous, though, especially on the counter-attack, and they are streetwise from set-pieces too. I don't see them losing here.

    Man City v Wolves (14:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Wolves are certainly backing manager Julen Lopetegui.

Mario Lemina comes in for his full debut today, Pablo Sarabia joins Matheus Cunha on the bench and Craig Dawson will be available for the next Premier League game, against Liverpool on 4 February.

That's four experienced new signings and there is still a week before the transfer window closes.

  9. Dawson joins Wolvespublished at 13:22 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

Chelsea are obviously leading the way this transfer window with their Football Manager-esque approach to signing every kid that's ever had the word wonder wafted near them.

But Wolves have also been busy and show no signs of stopping just yet.

Today, they have completed the signing of defender Craig Dawson from West Ham for £3.3m.

He follows midfielder Mario Lemina, winger Pablo Sarabia and forward Matheus Cunha as signings made since Julen Lopetegui arrived as boss.

  10. Wolves are 'turning the corner' under Lopeteguipublished at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

Man City v Wolves (14:00 GMT)

Wolves may have lost in the FA Cup to Liverpool on Tuesday, but their performance added substance to the idea Julen Lopetegui is inspiring a turnaround at Molineux, says former Premier League midfielder Michael Brown.

Since arriving at the club during the World Cup, Lopetegui has won two games to drag Wolves out of the relegation zone and Brown told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast he was impressed by their performance.

"They have gone out, but they will take a lot of positives from that performance," said the former Tottenham and Leeds United player. "They seem to be playing with higher intensity and created so much.

"They are really turning the corner. There are some really talented players there - with a bit of confidence, they will make progress."

Preston boss Ryan Lowe agreed, but said their ongoing problem of scoring goals needs to be fixed.

"They just need a bit of calmness in the 18-yard box," he said. "They have the quality to get up the pitch, but need to find a clinical route to score goals."

Man City v Wolves (14:00 GMT)

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on BBC 5 Live

I think for Man City, because of the way that operate in which they make four or five changes every single game across the board. With the World Cup being the way it was with most of their players being away.

You can see that they have not come back and hit the ground running as such whereas when you look at this Arsenal side, they are making a case for consistency of selection. You know who is going to play every week, aside from Zinchenko or Tierney.

You know what the Arsenal performance is going to look like, you know what it's going to be. For City the way that they tend to do things is through rotation so for them even if the manager questions your desire, you might get one week to show your desire but then you might be out the next week because that's just the way that they do things.

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

Phil Foden's absence from the Manchester City line-up is being put down to the England man not being fully fit.

That is clearly quite a vague description. Pep Guardiola will no doubt be asked for greater clarification.

  16. 'If we play that way, Arsenal will destroy us' - Guardiolapublished at 13:10 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

Man City v Wolves (14:00 GMT)

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking after Thursday's win over Tottenham:"We are far away from the team we had in previous seasons. Do you think this comeback [from 2-0 down against Tottenham to win 4-2] will happen every time? It won't.

"How do I get the fire back? It's my duty, my job. I want my fans back. I don't recognise my team. I'm not going to tell you what I said at half-time but I want a reaction for all the club, all the organisation, the players, the staff, everyone.

"We are a happy flowers team but I don't want to be happy flowers. I want to beat Arsenal, but if we play in that way Arsenal will destroy us. The players want it, they train really good but there is something that is here in the clouds.

"I see Arsenal games and they do everything good, that is why they are in front and deserve it. And I say this after 4-2 when I am incredibly happy. I will sleep tonight like a baby.

"I have experience. I have won a lot. It means every day I see things that you don't see because you are not there. I see it. It is not one single player, it is everyone. But we will come back."

  17. Guardiola's 'fire and brimstone reaction' sets tone for Man Citypublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

Man City v Wolves (14:00 GMT)

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Pep Guardiola may have ended a thunderous night pumping his arms into the air and blowing kisses into the stands but he was clearly less than satisfied as he warned Manchester City will not be winning their fifth title in six years unless they raise themselves to their previous heights.

The manager's fire and brimstone reaction continued into his post-match debriefing as Guardiola's perfectionist approach bubbled to the surface, outlining what he expects from everyone at City on and off the pitch.

No-one was spared as Guardiola clearly felt victory - "I am incredibly happy, I will sleep like a baby tonight" - allowed him a better platform to state that he was not actually incredibly happy at all.

Guardiola wants more than the natural gifts of his players, particularly as they try to overcome the hunger of a new challenger in the shape of Arsenal.

The Gunners are still in control of the title race, five points ahead with a game in hand, but no one listening to Guardiola was left in any doubt that he wants the old champion City back consistently and he wants it now.

This was spectacular, eventually, on the field - and Guardiola made it spectacular off it too.

Watch Guardiola's rant after Spurs win

Pep Guardiola was not a happy lad, despite seeing his Manchester City side come back from two goals down to win 3-2 at the Etihad this week.

He accused his players of lacking fight and also had a dig at the City fans, who booed the winners of the title for four of the last five seasons off the pitch at half time.

“They were silent for 45 minutes,” said Guardiola of those in attendance. “They booed because we were losing; maybe it’s the same as our team - they are so comfortable winning four Premier Leagues in five years.”

City are far from the only team at whom this occurs, but I was struck watching the crowd when they scored their third to lead after being 2-0 down in a crucial game in their quest to win a trophy just how low-key the cheering was and how many camera phones were out filming.

  19. 'Just what City needed'published at 13:04 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2023

Man City v Wolves (14:00 GMT)

Former England winger Steve Stone says Manchester City's spectacular comeback against Tottenham "might spark their season".

Pep Guardiola's side were shellshocked at half-time after two quick Spurs goals but came roaring back in the second half, thanks to an inspired display from Riyad Mahrez.

Stone told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast that Guardiola's players have the experience to keep pushing Arsenal at the top of the table.

"That might have been just what City needed," he said. "They are five points behind but have very talented players who know how to go the distance.

"It might just spark their season."

Some have suggested City's inconsistent recent form is partly a result of changes in personnel but Stone dismissed that suggestion.

"They have had to keep chopping and changing, particularly with their centre-half pairings," he said. "But I don't think that will change.

"Arsenal have huge momentum at the moment but can they play the same players all the way through to the end of the season? City will keep chopping and changing and probably get the same number of points as they always do."
