  2. 'Quite how Everton ended up not signing anybody is a mystery given their situation'published at 12:15 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

The two big stories from transfer deadline day came at either end of the financial scale as Chelsea’s eye-watering transfer spree went on and struggling Everton failed to spend a penny despite being in relegation trouble.

Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly capped off the window with a British record £107m deal for Benfica’s Argentine World Cup winner Enzo Fernadez, following on from the £88m signing of Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Boehly wasted no time making an impact after succeeding Roman Abramovich with a £270m outlay in the summer, a record for a British club, then followed it in January by spending £288m to take the total new incomings to 17 new players.

Long contracts have been handed out as Chelsea work around Financial Fair Play so there is no doubt there is an element of gamble to the process and added pressure on these deals to be successful within this high-risk strategy.

Manager Graham Potter was promised he was part of a long-term plan but logic dictates the usual Chelsea managerial rules will apply if he does not swiftly knit that expensive and rapidly expanding squad together into a successful unit.

Over at Everton, there was anger and bemusement among an already discontented fanbase that what was regarded as one of the most crucial transfer windows in recent history went by without a single signing, even after Anthony Gordon was sold to Newcastle United in a deal that could eventually be worth £45m.

Some headed to Everton’s Finch Farm training headquarters as the clock ticked down to the close of the transfer window to vent their feelings while more protests are planned for Saturday’s home game against Arsenal, with owner Farhad Moshiri, chairman Bill Kenwright and chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale under fierce scrutiny and criticism from fans.

Director of football Kevin Thelwell is also under fire for the failure to get any deals over the line.

All this as a backdrop to new manager Sean Dyche’s first game in charge.

Quite how Everton ended up not signing anybody is a mystery given their situation but if they fail to stay in the Premier League it is something that will take its place among so many bad decisions at boardroom level in recent years.

  3. 'There’ll be a feeling of real frustration and disappointment among Everton fans'published at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

To say the least, there’ll be a feeling of real frustration and disappointment among Everton fans that no new players could be found in the month of January. A new manager can often provide a positive 'bounce', and the arrival of Sean Dyche will hopefully do that.

But a new signing or two would have been a real bonus under the circumstances heading into Saturday’s home game with leaders Arsenal. Making signings doesn’t guarantee success as Everton have found in recent years, but it must have been a hard few hours for Blues fans as the clock ticked round to 23:00 on Tuesday.

Reinforcements in the striking department was an obvious priority with the side struggling to score goals and without a win since October. It means Dyche will have to work towards guiding Everton to safety with the existing group of players – minus of course Anthony Gordon. So he will need all his experience and know-how to find ways to get points because Everton desperately need them.

  4. 'A typical Everton transfer window'published at 12:13 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

We asked for your reaction to Everton's quiet deadline day and what this means going forward.

Here are some of your comments:

Mike: When Dyche was given the job he was expected to keep us up with his hands tied behind his back. At 23:00 on Tuesday the board tied his shoelaces together. It proves what the majority of fans have saying, Moshiri and his minions are incompetent. If Dyche manages to keep us up after this they should name a stand at Bramley-Moore after him.

Steve: Yet again the board fails the Everton fans. Even Sean Dyche questioned why they announced his signing as manager a day before deadline day. If they had announced his leadership a few days before he may have had time to buy a couple of players. I think Moshri wants rid of Everton to recoup some of his losses, on condition Bill Kenwright stays in some form.

Barry: A typical Everton transfer window. Absolutely no activity early enough to secure what we need, lots of leaked rumours about players we allegedly tried to sign on deadline day, and a squad that’s weaker at the end of the window than at the start. Relegated or not, until Moshiri, Kenwright and the board are gone the club is destined to fail.

Andrew: It says something when prospective signings choose other clubs or decline a move. Panic buying was not the answer but the need for a striker has been known by the board for months. Selling your best assets before new signings is crazy. Dyche is a good appointment and change will come but is it too late ? I fear it is Championship football next.

  5. Dyche says Everton did try to sign new players in Januarypublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

Sean Dyche says Everton did their best to sign new players

Dyche also addressed Everton's lack of signings on deadline day in his first press conference.

The Toffees were reportedly in for a number of targets but saw many of them snatched from them by other clubs or just flat-out reject the move.

Watford's Ismaila Sarr was apparently one of them, as was Conor Gallagher.

Dyche stressed: "All I have seen is hard work, particularly in the recruitment area.

"We worked very, very hard [to bring new players in]. I can assure you the club worked hard because I was here, I was watching it, I was involved in it."

Everton are 19th in the Premier League table and face league leaders Arsenal at Goodison Park on Saturday, before taking on Liverpool in the Merseyside derby a week later.

"I was ringing agents," added Dyche. "We were doing all of the diligence, crunching all of the numbers, analytics, doing all that we could do to define the players that could help."

Sean Dyche said his key message since arriving at Everton has been about unity and the club's new manager wants "even the most disgruntled Evertonians to give us a chance".

Speaking in his first news conference as Toffees boss, he said: "The message is clear - unity.

"Even the most disgruntled Evertonians, give us a chance and stick by the team because they are important, they're very important.

"I'm reaching out to them, we'll give you honesty, work ethic, all we ask is give us a window to breathe, get ourselves going, play your role in that.

"It's easy to take the wheel of the ship in calm water, not so much when it's choppy water, we want the fans to play a part in that. It is choppy waters, there is no denying that. The club is not where it wants to be. But we want the fans to join in with us, to reconnect with us.

"It's easy to say, I've got to earn my spurs, I'm a Marmite manager anyway - not everyone wants you. We've got to put the hard yards in, some players have earned that but I want to remind them that they have to give. We want them to support from the off, wear their hearts on their sleeves, even the ones who have angles, questions, if they can park it for a little while and hopefully reconnect with us."

  8. 'I see everybody really happy and willing to continue with the club'published at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    Wait, there's more...

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes Bukayo Saka and William Saliba will follow Gabriel Martinelli in signing new contracts at the club.

"Part of the plan is to extend the contracts of our biggest talents. We are trying to do that," said Arteta when asked about the pair ahead of his side's trip to Everton on Saturday.

"The others will be done whenever we can. I see everybody really happy and willing to continue with the club."

When asked about Martinelli, Arteta said: "It’s great news. We want to build on all the talent that we have in the squad. It’s great to see them happy and commit to the club.

"It’s a player with enormous potential and there are so many areas to improve in all departments. In terms of consistency, in terms of the space he occupies. He is so willing, that is the first thing about Gabi."

  9. Martinelli extends deal until 2027published at 12:06 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

And the good news just keeps coming for Arsenal...

Gunners forward Gabriel Martinelli says he "could not imagine being anywhere else" after committing his future to the club until 2027.

The 21-year-old has been with the Gunners since 2019 and is enjoying an outstanding season, scoring seven goals in 19 Premier League games.

"As soon as I got here, the supporters made me feel like one of them," he said in a video on Arsenal's Twitter feed.

"It's about more than football - it's about our heritage, our togetherness and the community spirit you have to experience and understand.

"Day-by-day, we make new memories together and feel the pride that comes from being a Gunner. I couldn't imagine being anywhere else."

    Rating: 9/10

I am happy with Arsenal’s transfer business. We have spent £50m and have got three quality signings so that’s money well spent.

It was fundamental that we got cover for Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny so bringing in a Premier League proven signing in Jorginho is exactly what we needed at this stage of the season.

It’s great also that Leandro Trossard brings Premier League experience and he has already fitted in well with our the system.

Great work from Mikel Arteta and the team to run a successful January transfer window for Arsenal. Let’s go and win the Premier League this year. #TrustTheProcess

  11. Who will be key for Arsenal?published at 12:04 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    William SalibaImage source, Getty Images

Who or what could be key in a huge second half of the season at Arsenal?

The team on BBC Radio London’s The Far Post podcast have had their say in their latest episode.

Sports editor Phil Parry said: “For me, it’s not a key man but key element. It’s the strength and conditioning and medical department.

"Their squad isn’t as deep as maybe Manchester City’s, so keeping everyone fit is so important. They can’t sustain too many injuries like other clubs can.”

Former Premier League defender Steve Brown has William Saliba outlined as a vital figure in Arsenal’s pursuit of the title.

“Last year, there were times Arsenal were good but would get unpicked,” Brown said.

“I’ve heard people wax lyrical about ‘if Gabriel Jesus gets injured I don’t know how we score goals’. But the big difference, for me, is they can go toe to toe at the other end.

"They can leave themselves one versus one, or two versus two. You can push people further forward and make numerical advantages in areas of the pitch.

"Saliba is not getting mentioned. He's 21, quick, strong - I think he has been a fantastic addition.”

Everton boss Sean Dyche has written his first matchday programme notes and it's clear what he wants from his side.

He says: "It's a big challenge ahead, but one we are ready and eager to take on. The key to doing that must start with a basic principle of what Everton Football Club has always been about: hard work.

"We must put sweat on the shirt and give everything. That means putting out a team that works, that can fight and wear the badge with pride to meet the demands of a fanbase who care so much about their club.

"Of course, we must have the tactical understanding and the technical ability layered on top but the will to give everything is a great starting point."

  16. 'A shrewd transfer window' or 'disappointed we didn't get our main targets'?published at 11:57 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

We asked for your reaction to Arsenal's business on deadline day and whether the Gunners strengthened suffieciently.

Here are some of your comments:

Kevin: A good window for the Gunners. Trossard for £21m is a good bit of business at that price. Jorginho for me was the best piece of business - a steal at £12m. Hugely experienced and fantastic backup for Xhaka and Partey with Elneny out.

Dez: Slightly disappointed that we didn't get our main targets. But we have added to the squad in areas that were needed. I feel as if we are going to be a midfielder short after letting Sambi leave on loan (though he needed the game time and Palace will be a great place to learn). Hopefully we don't regret not being more assertive in the market.

Tanay: A shrewd transfer window. Smart moves rather then wasting money like Chelsea. Trossard already looking like the real deal and Jorginho is a proven serial winner. An exciting second half of the season awaits us.

Dan: Overall a pretty good window. A lot of rumours flying around and clubs hiking the price up after initial bids. It was good to see Edu and Arsenal not be sucked into paying large sums for unproven players. Save that money for summer spending. Jorginho deal could prove vital to winning the title!

Steve: Jorginho has had a fantastic career but is he really the answer for Arsenal even as a squad player? He has never suited the high intensity game we currently play so I wonder what he will add. Even more puzzling is the decision to loan Lokonga to Palace, leaving us, once again, one down on holding midfield players. Let’s hope Partey and Xhaka stay fit.

  17. The 'infectious character' of Jorginhopublished at 11:56 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

Arsenal have snapped up an "infectious character who will only add to the dressing room" in Jorginho, says his former Chelsea team-mate Robert Green.

The Italy midfielder was a surprise mover on deadline day and Green believes both clubs will be satisfied with the £12m deal.

"He is really likeable and bubbly around the dressing room," Green told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "He has a nickname for everyone and is brilliant to work with.

"Beyond that, he will bring knowledge and a computer chessboard-like style of playing. He is something Arsenal do not already have in their starting XI.

"He has a different mentality - one similar to Mikel Arteta - and I think both parties will be happy with that deal."

Senior football reporter Ian Dennis agreed, arguing anyone questioning the move should "trust the process".

"The recruitment at Arsenal has been very good," he said. "They have moved quickly, dealt with setbacks and have a manager who has completely transformed the environment.

"Jorginho is proven, he's a winner and he's costing £12m only until 2024."

    JorginhoImage source, Getty Images

Jorginho says he was surprised by his move to Arsenal but wanted to make the most of "the opportunity of this amazing challenge".

He admitted the Gunners had tried to sign him in the past and said Mikel Arteta was a big factor behind the move.

He told the club website: , external"He was a big influence because I know that he tried a few times to get me before and it didn’t happen due to other reasons, not because of my wishes. So of course, he had a big influence.

"I’m very excited for this new challenge, and I just can’t wait to be on the pitch to be honest. Everything has happened so fast. I was a bit surprised, but I took the opportunity of this amazing challenge.

"It’s an important shirt. It’s an amazing club, a big one, and I’m really excited and happy to be here.

"I’ll try to just bring positive energy, hard work and my experience to help the team. It’s what I always bring with me.

"I try just to help with the experience I’ve had in my time with the other clubs and anything I can do just to help the team to achieve more and more, that’s my target. All I can promise is that I’m going to give my all to represent this club."

  19. 'Jorginho still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here'published at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

Mikel Arteta says Jorginho still has the hunger to contribute to Arsenal's title challenge despite all the trophies he has already won in his career.

The Italy midfielder arrives at Emirates Stadium on an 18-month contract in a £12m deal.

Arteta said: "Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience.

"Jorginho has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here.

"We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club."

Sporting director Edu added: "Jorginho is an established professional with a strong mentality who brings quality and experience into our squad.

"He is a player who fits our style of play, and he joins us at a very good moment where he can contribute in a key position to help maintain our momentum. We welcome Jorginho to Arsenal."

Could two clubs and two sets of fans be at such opposite ends of the scale for happiness and positivity than those of Everton and Arsenal right now?

The Gunners are absolutely flying in the league, in the mix for a first title since 2003-04 and with a couple of new faces in the building to further boost the feel-good mood around the place.

Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior were joined on deadline day by Jorginho - a £12m signing from Chelsea, and a man who knows a thing or two about winning stuff.
