Today is, of course, also a big game for Tottenham, who will have been happy to see Newcastle drop points at home yesterday evening.

Spurs have been in inconsistent form for much of the season but a victory this afternoon will make it two victories on the spin, move them to within a point of Eddie Howe's side and give them an almighty scalp to boost their confidence.

They'll likely have a few fresh faces to call upon too, with ex-City right-back Pedro Porro and forward Arnaut Danjuma now both in the building.

Just to look forward to the later game for a moment, it is a big chance for Manchester City to close the gap at the top of the Premier League today. But it will not be easy.

City have lost their last three away league games against Tottenham by an aggregate score of 5-0. Only twice in the Premier League have they lost four in a row without scoring away against an opponent – against Chelsea between 2006 and 2009, and Sunderland between 2010 and 2013.

You'll also remember (because it wasn't that long ago) that City were 2-0 down to Spurs at half-time at the Etihad the last time they met. They then blew them away second half with four unanswered goals, of course.

  4. Marsch 'needs results - and quickly' - Brownpublished at 13:32 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Nottingham Forest v Leeds (14:00 GMT)

Leeds may have spent a significant amount of money in the January transfer window, but their former midfielder Michael Brown believes Jesse Marsch's position remains precarious.

The American boss has been backed with a club-record purchase of Georginio Rutter as well as centre-back Max Wober and USA midfielder Weston McKennie this month.

Ahead of a vital run of fixtures, Brown says the pressure is on to get results.

"They need to get results, and quickly," he told BBC Sport. "Probably the worst game they could have next is 'little old' Nottingham Forest, at home. I don't think Leeds fans would accept a loss.

"And then they have got back-to-back games against the team they hate the most, Manchester United. That makes the Forest game even bigger."

Brown was at Elland Road when Leeds lost 3-2 to Fulham in October and he feels the atmosphere at the club now is similar, despite the win over Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.

"Marsch went to clap the fans and I said on 5 Live that it was like he was saying goodbye," said Brown. "Now, they're almost ready to turn again because the results are not acceptable."

  5. 'Harrison wanted to stay'published at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Jesse Marsch says that Jack Harrison "wanted to stay" at Leeds despite a deadline day transfer saga which saw him nearly move to Leicester.

The Foxes were linked with a £20m move for the midfielder, with Brendan Rodgers yesterday admitting he met and spoke to the player.

"In the eleventh hour something came from Leicester," Marsch said.

"We had been talking with Jack for a while about renegotiating his contract. It had gone well but then was stalled at different moments.

"Before all the powers that could get together from all the different angles then in the eleventh hour there is some internal discussions in a lot of different ways on what is best for everyone. But once it all came together it was clear that we wanted him to stay and Jack wanted to stay - that is why he is still here.

"We are revisiting that contract and getting that extended as Jack is an important guy in our squad."

Max Wober said after just one week with Leeds United he feels like he has always been there because of how easily he has settled in.

The 24-year-old has played five games since his move from Red Bull Salzburg at the start of the January transfer window.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds' Adam Pope about his move from Red Bull Salzburg, he said: "It’s probably the only time when I really get nervous. You know you are going to meet 50 new people, 25 of these are players. They all are competing with each other and you don't know what they are like, how their personalities are.

"Normally most of them are always really nice, really helpful and you get in touch with them easy. But sometimes there can be players, especially in the same position, they are going to be tough to you because they want to show you from the first moment that you are not going to take my place.

"But I have to say when I came here, I’ve never arrived to a team that was that helpful, that nice, that friendly. It doesn’t matter which player, even if we are competing for a position, it was such an easy transition coming into this team.

"One week here and it’s like I’ve always played here. I know everybody, I speak to everybody, we are joking around. Settling in was really easy and I can only thank all the team-mates for having that personality because it just makes it easy for every new player that comes to this team."

  7. How successful was the January transfer window?published at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Jess Furness, Her Game Too, external

    Rating:8/10

For the first time in my life, I can finally say I'm ecstatic with our January transfer business after a record-breaking month.

The January window hasn't always been my favourite as a Leeds fan – remember the 'Don't go to bed just yet' fiasco on Twitter in 2014? Need I say more?

Four quality additions in Georginio Rutter, Weston McKennie, Max Wober and Diogo Monteiro are greatly needed. They will make the difference for us to avoid relegation this season and instead hopefully finish comfortably in mid-table.

We've also done great business with the loan of Diego Llorente to Roma with an option-to-buy clause.

I'm now feeling much more optimistic for the remainder of this season.

  8. No need for Jack to pack - the icing on the cake for Whitespublished at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Nottingham Forest v Leeds (14:00 GMT)

    Adam Pope
    BBC Radio Leeds

A stupendous January transfer window for Leeds United in a month which normally leaves supporters as bleak as the elements.

Austria defender Max Wober, Champions League midfielder Weston McKennie and record signing Georginio Rutter have significantly bolstered Jesse Marsch's squad through each third of the pitch.

If the number of incomings and the commitment to potentially spend upwards of £70m on them was a surprise, then so was the loan exit of defender to Diego Llorente to Roma. If United recoup the £18m they paid Real Sociedad for the Spaniard it would be unexpected redemption for a transfer that spiralled into a disappointingly diminishing return.

But the coup de grace is Jack Harrison remaining at Elland Road, with 18 months of his contract remaining and the opportunity for the club to negotiate a new deal for one of their most experienced and influential players of recent times.

There was an air of jeopardy over Harrison's future with relegation rivals Leicester City offloading wingers Ayoze Perez and Marc Albrighton on loan to try to help finance an attempt to land the in-form 26-year-old.

So, instead of being the shivering, empty-pocketed kid with their face pressed up against the toy shop window, Leeds were proudly standing at the till, cash in hand, and taking care of business without pawning their best assets.

  9. January transfer window 'all looks like good business'published at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Adonis Storr, The Roaring Peacock, external

Leeds United have spent more in this winter window than every other combined.

The previous January record came during Andrea Radrizzani's first season in charge of the Whites. Yosuke Ideguchi, Laurens de Bock, Adam Forshaw and Tyler Roberts were brought in for a total of £9m.

The Max Wober transfer eclipsed that by itself.

And, while Georginio Rutter broke the club record, the Weston McKennie loan has proved the pull of the USA connection United have built.

Diogo Monteiro – captain of various Portugal youth teams – is a young player with a high ceiling. The club will hope Monteiro is ready to step up if needed.

The only outgoings seem to be Diego Llorente and Joe Gelhardt. Llorente was very poor when Leeds conceded five against Brentford earlier in the season. With Wober on the pitch against the Bees at Elland Road, the London club didn't even register a shot on target.

It all looks like good business.

The statement £46m spent this January will be mostly paid by 49ers Enterprises – the company set to take full control of the club by the end of this year.

If this is their benchmark, the future could be exciting for the Peacocks.

  10. 'The job Cooper has done is remarkable'published at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Nottingham Forest v Leeds (14:00 GMT)

Former Premier League player James McFadden says the job Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has done is "remarkable" and that he is an "exceptional manager" despite his side being knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

Forest suffered a 2-0 second-leg defeat by Manchester United, meaning they suffered a 5-0 aggregate semi-final loss to the 2017 winners of the competition.

“Steve Cooper is disappointed as they have come this far and the last thing he wants is a pat on the back. He is a football manager and he wants to win," McFadden told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

“He is saying that the realism of it is - 5-0 is not good enough for where he wants to be. Nottingham Forest before Cooper were going down and into League One, never mind playing in the Premier League and contesting for national semi-finals. They were going down.

“The job he has down is remarkable. Cooper has standards like Ten Hag that he wants his players to get to and he wasn’t for taking the old 'bad luck' shout for the goals. Even though one was bad luck he didn’t want to dwell on it.

“He was looking for better decision making in those areas. I think they were competitive, ultimately getting beat by a better side. Forest for where they were to where they are now it has been such a journey but he wants more.

“It shows the hunger for Cooper that he wants more of these nights, they can’t wait another 30 years for a night like tonight and it won’t be under a manager like him as he is an exceptional manager."

The two-time European Cup winners this season were back in the Premier League for the first time since 1999.

Former Dutch footballer Rene Meulensteen, added: "Forest now need to solidify their position in the league and stay in the league and keep an eye on how to progress into next season - making sure they are going to be a stable Premier League team.

"To then make the right signings to push on into Europe as that is what everyone knows Nottingham Forest for under Brian Clough - to bring those days back to life.

"I am sure Steve has that at the back of his mind."

  11. 'Navas is an outstanding goalkeeper'published at 13:18 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Nottingham Forest v Leeds (14:00 GMT)

    Clinton Morrison
Former Republic of Ireland striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Keylor Navas is an outstanding goalkeeper, obviously his CV says it all. They needed to bring a goalkeeper in with Henderson picking up an injury. He's outstanding.

The Premier League is different though to other countries that he has played in.

Forest do try and play out form the back so I think that will help Navas. He's a goalkeeper that is comfortable with the ball at his feet. The signing is really good.

Where Forest are in this position, he's been there, seen it, done it, so I think it's a good bit of business from Steve Cooper.

  12. 'We at Nottingham Forest did nothing wrong'published at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Steve Cooper says Nottingham Forest "did nothing wrong" in Lewis O'Brien's collapsed move to Blackburn.

The midfielder was set to move to Ewood Park on a loan deal until the end of the season but the move fell through due to delayed paperwork.

The 24-year-old has been omitted from Forest's 25-man Premier League squad.

"It is really frustrating as Lewis is a player that we like and a player that works really hard, a good guy," Cooper said.

"Obviously through conversations we agreed that he could go on loan.

"It won't take a genius to work out what has happened. I hope some questions are getting asked over there in Lancashire.

"We at Nottingham Forest did nothing wrong, doing everything on time and very correct in the process so for him to be let down at the end is a problem which has ended up back at our training ground. I feel for the lad but we will try and find a solution.

"We treat our players well so will try and find a solution as he deserves that."

    What a window for Forest!

The owner has really backed the gaffer once again by allowing us to bring in experience and flair.

Keylor Navas is undoubtedly world class and is an excellent addition for the rest of the season. Danilo and Gustavo Scarpa are untested in the Premier League but their Brazilian countryman Felipe brings lots of experience at the top level to the centre of our defence. He is also reunited with Renan Lodi (on loan from Atletico).

Finally, Jonjo Shelvey adds years of Premier League knowledge, which will be invaluable on and off the pitch.

  14. Forest's 'remarkable' signingspublished at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2023

Nottingham Forest v Leeds (14:0 GMT)

Nottingham Forest have made wise moves to strengthen their squad in January, says football expert James Horncastle.

Initially speaking about Keylor Navas on the Euro Leagues podcast, Horncastle highlighted how Steve Cooper exploited the lure of the Premier League to make some smart acquisitions.

"Forest have won the European Cup so are a big name in their own right but they are only just back in Premier League for the first time," he said. "For them to sign this calibre of player is remarkable."

As well as Keylor Navas, Forest picked up Gustavo Scarpa and Danilo from Brazilian title winners Palmeiras.

"They have been the best side in South America for a number of years now," he said. "And Forest have made some good signings.

"It shows the pulling power even a promoted side in the Premier League can have."

Nottingham Forest are unbeaten in their last four Premier League games (W2 D2), last having a longer run without defeat in the top-flight between February and November 1995 (25 games). They're unbeaten in their last six at home, alternating between a draw and a victory each time.

Meanwhile, no side has won fewer Premier League points away from home than Leeds United this season (5 – W1 D2 L6), with their only victory on the road coming at Liverpool in October.

It's very good news for Forest that they have Morgan Gibbs-White back and fit. His combination with Brennan Johnson could be the key to keeping them in the division.

Keylor Navas is certainly not the worst replacement for Dean Henderson in net! Just the three Champions League winners medals in his collection. Fellow new lads, Andre Ayew and Felipe could make their debuts later in the game.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch resists the urge to throw Weston McKennie and Georginio Rutter into the mix. They have more firepower on the bench than they have for a long time.
