From the resulting corner, Joelinton nods the ball towards Dan Burn at the back post but the defender can't make contact.

Joelinton scored Newcastle's third with a header from a set-piece in the 3-0 win at Leicester on Boxing Day, so they need no warning to watch him.

    Another Newcastle chance!

Miguel Almiron is causing all sorts of bother. He beats the diving Wout Faes on the left and cuts in before setting up Callum Wilson for a shot that deflects behind.

    Man Utd 0-0 Charlton

Huge cheer from the away fans as Steven Sessegnon comes sliding in to halt Antony's attempt to raid down the wing.

Sessegnon certainly has his work cut out against the Brazilian winger but he's standing up to the challenge well so far.

You have to feel for Brendan Rodgers here. He's arrived with an XI stripped of some serious talent through injuries. It doesn't make matching one of the most in-form confident sides in Europe and easy job!

That early home blitz of the City goal has whipped this crowd up even more.

And believe me, they were already pretty rowdy.

Nice work from Manchester United as they fashion an opportunity.

Scott McTominay wins possession before finding Alejandro Garnacho, who pulls the ball back for Diogo Dalot but he fires well over.

    Newcastle 0-0 Leicester

It wasn't that long ago that Newcastle put three goals past Leicester in just over 30 minutes. They are in full flight and threatening to do the same here.

Bruno Guimaraes fires a shot that whistles just off target.

    Massive miss inside 60 seconds!

Newcastle rip Leicester open as Miguel Almiron drives forward. He finds Joe Willock, whose cross into the middle finds Sean Longstaff. He has most of the goal to side-foot into but bundles his effort into the turf and over the bar.

What a let off for Leicester.

Fair play to the travelling Charlton fans, more than 9,000 making the journey north on a very wet and miserable Tuesday evening.

They are making some great noise in the away end as their side embarks on an early attack.

Only seconds in but the visitors certainly look up for it.

There has been uncertainty over the Charlton ownership amid claims Thomas Sandgaard has entered a period of exclusivity with one potential purchaser.

Interestingly, former Sunderland executive Charlie Methven, Simon Lenegan, son of Wigan RL owner Ian, and Dan Roddick are all listed as Charlton's 'club guests' in Old Trafford directors box this evening.

Methvan and Lenegan have been spotted at previous Charlton games recently.

Newcastle are overachieving but it has been amazing. Their defence has been unbelievable.

Tonight is a bit different, though. If Newcastle have a bad night then it's over, it's not like the Premier League when you can come back next week.

The fans will be edgy tonight and a little bit nervous because they don't want to see another opportunity get wasted.

More than 9,000 fans have travelled with League One Charlton for tonight's game against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

It is the club's biggest away following in over a decade and, according to those who know the club well, probably their largest travelling contingent for a midweek cup tie ever.

The prize is a huge one - Charlton's first major tournament semi-final since they won the FA Cup in 1947.

Victory would be a massive shock. Charlton's last away win at Manchester United was in 1986, when Mark Stuart scored the only goal. Prior to that, their only successes at Old Trafford were both in the 1930s.

Nevertheless, it should be a night to remember.

  16. 'They've said there will be funds' - Rodgers on transferspublished at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

Brendan Rodgers admits he has to trust the club’s hierarchy to bring in new players as he looks to bolster his squad for the second half of the season.

The Foxes only brought in defender Wout Faes in the summer window and it has been a quiet start to January so far.

However, he insists he is not concerned about the lack of recruitment and is determined to focus on factors he can control.

“I have to respect the club to get the deals over the line,” he said. “I know the work that goes on.

“But I can only work with the players that are here and I’m sure in time that others will come through the door.”

Talisman James Maddison has not featured since returning from World Cup duty with England and, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Dennis Praet also out, Leicester’s options are thin in midfield.

“In the last two windows, we’ve signed one outfield player so if you go through a third one, it makes it a challenge,” Rodgers said. “They’ve said there will be some funds so if we can use those and get players back, it could be a good season.

“Until then, I have to work with the players we have.”

  17. 'The most important transfer window in years'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

I’ve said it before, following Leicester is a rollercoaster ride - and this season is proving it.

We have gone from being the club that everyone else wants to use as their blueprint, to one slowly losing the wheels from their wagon.

We are used to stubborn managers - we had Nigel Pearson after all - but Brendan Rodgers takes this to a whole new level. An amazing coach, some say, but one that has been outthought by peers with little - or in Bournemouth’s case no - managerial experience.

We have a huge injury list. Players who don’t perform end up getting get picked, while experienced players just spend their time picking splinters out of their posteriors.

There is such a thing as teacher's pets, but Rodgers has his own zoo.

Two up front was shown to work well a few seasons ago, but what happened the following campaign? Back to the lone striker.

We have a squad the same size as all the clubs, but Rodgers has a small circle of favourites.

Our summer transfer saga was embarrassing. Calling Top, Susan Whelan, Martin Glover et al: this is the most important transfer window in years.

We cannot afford to get this one wrong.

  18. 'A week with huge implications'published at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

The possibility of a domestic treble is off the cards for Newcastle United, after crashing out of the FA Cup to League One Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. A tongue-in-cheek comment, of course, but Eddie Howe’s side are sitting third in the league with attention now turning to a Carabao Cup quarter-final on Tuesday.

The Magpies are eyeing up a first domestic semi-final spot in 18 years when they host Leicester. Howe has insisted he will field a full-strength side after making eight changes for the loss at Hillsborough. It was evident that at least one eye was on the League Cup last weekend with the big names rested.

In my opinion, there is more at stake than just a chance of being two games away from Wembley. Indeed, Newcastle have yet to play at the new Wembley in a cup competition (playing in the league while it was Tottenham's temporary home).

This week has huge implications for developing us into a club that is used to being in the latter stages of tournaments. The owners have made no secret of their aspirations to win titles in the next few years so the sooner the team can adapt their mentality and believe they are good enough the better.

With many big clubs already out, Newcastle are serious contenders. A sold-out home crowd certainly hopes so!

  19. 'I've really missed the feeling of being on a football pitch'published at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

Alexander Isak has described his injury lay-off as "very frustrating" and says he is looking forward to getting back among the goals for Newcastle United.

The Magpies' record signing made his first appearance since mid-September on Saturday, as Eddie Howe's side suffered a shock FA Cup exit at Sheffield Wednesday.

"It's the longest I've been out in my quite short career," the 23-year-old Sweden forward told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"I had some complications, but now that I'm fit, I don't really want to talk too much about the injury. I'm happy to back."

And Isak now wants to make the most of his time back on the pitch and help Newcastle maintain their form.

"It's helped me lot seeing how well the team has done. That's been very positive, and it's made me more calm in the [recovery] process.

"I've really missed the feeling of being on a football pitch and I want to get back scoring for the team again."

  20. 'The type of atmosphere you play for'published at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

Brendan Rodgers has warned how "strong" and focused his side will need to be when they travel to Newcastle in Tuesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final.

The Foxes hosted Eddie Howe's side on 26 December and fell three goals behind after 32 minutes, eventually losing 3-0.

They lost their two subsequent Premier League games before a hard-earned FA Cup win over Gillingham on Saturday.

Eyeing the quarter-final, Rodgers said: "It’s a fantastic game. We’ve got experience now in cup competitions. This here is a brilliant game for us. We played Newcastle a few weeks ago and didn’t show our true selves. We shot ourselves in the foot."

Howe has called on his side to be more "clinical" in the fixture having not picked up a win since that Boxing Day success.

Asked why Howe has been able to turn Newcastle's fortunes so well, Rodgers added: “It’s a combination. Eddie has done great with the players. The investment and recruitment has been very good, which has given them a strong base to work from. The confidence and the support is there. How fanatical the supporters are and how they back their team.

"When you combine that with a good team, it makes them really strong. It feels like an occasion when you go to St James’ Park. They’re consistently playing well, so I’m sure it’s hard to get a ticket. They’d be disappointed from the weekend. But they will want to make a semi-final.

“It’s the type of atmosphere you play for. You just have to stay calm. You are playing with emotion and you have to defend strongly and with maximum concentration.

"If you start well, it can lead to tension in the ground. It should be a great game.”
