  1. 'There is a reality'published at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

More from Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers: "You have to look at the reality of it. It's so important for every club that supporters can dream, but there is a reality to it and a reason why the trophies have been won in the main by the biggest clubs with the biggest resources, that's natural.

"It does not stop us trying any harder or working any harder and we've proven in the two games at Wembley [FA Cup and Community Shield] we can take a trophy home.

"That will never cease while I'm here because that's what we want to do and I know the players are very keen to do it as well."

  3. Charlton's exoduspublished at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Man Utd v Charlton (20:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Charlton's 9,000-strong travelling support is thought to be their biggest away following for a midweek cup tie ever.

This has not been the easiest season for the club but that following shows the potential at the Valley.

There is uncertainty over the plans of current owner Thomas Sandgaard, although for 90 minutes, that should be forgotten about for the final London representative in this season's EFL Cup.

  5. 'Anything can happen'published at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

Man Utd v Charlton (20:00 GMT)

Charlton boss Dean Holden speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We can't come here and open the pitch up too early, United have got a lot of speed.

"We have to be bang at it to have any chance and United have to be off their top performance.

"As we saw with Stevenage at Villa Park, and we've seen over the years, anything can happen. All I've told the players is 'unless you believe it, you've no chance', so why not?"

  6. Holden relishing 'special moment'published at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

It is a huge night for Charlton and in particular their manager Dean Holden.

The former Bolton defender is a big Manchester United fan and still has a season ticket with the club

"Coming out of the tunnel will be completely surreal," he said.

"I've been on the other side in the stands hundreds of times over 35 years but once I'm walking down that touchline I'll be totally focused on the game.

"There are 28 family members going. We've had to beg, steal and borrow for tickets. Everybody wants to be there because they know what a special moment it will be."

Sir Alex won the League Cup four times during his glittering managerial career with Manchester United - in 1991-92, 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2009-10.

  8. United moving in 'right direction'published at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United are definitely moving in the right direction. Ten Hag has done a brilliant job since he joined the club.

You may say he's shown priorities here with regard to identifying the league as his number one, but let's see how this evening goes and we might say 'what a fantastic team he's picked'.

  9. Man Utd not won a trophy since 2017published at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Man Utd v Charlton (20:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

The EFL Cup is one of three trophies Manchester United have won since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

It was part of a trophy double, along with the Europa League, in 2017, Jose Mourinho's first season at Old Trafford.

Hopes that Mourinho would bring success back to United were dashed, as was optimism after a similar beginning for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Now it's Erik ten Hag's turn to try and end United's trophy-less drought. If he doesn't manage it this season, it will be the longest run without a cup since the nine years between winning the European Cup in 1968 and FA Cup in 1977.

  10. Howe demands 'more clinical' Newcastlepublished at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

Eddie Howe is expecting a tough task when Newcastle host Leicester in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after their 15-game unbeaten run was ended in surprise fashion by League One Sheffield Wednesday.

The Magpies comfortably beat Brendan Rodgers’ side on Boxing Day but, after successive goalless draws against Leeds and Arsenal, Howe says his team will need to be “more clinical” to stand any chance of winning their first trophy in 68 years.

“We have to be more clinical,” he said. “If we look back at the Leeds game and on Saturday, there were too many chances not taken.

“This game will be different to Boxing Day. Brendan is a very good tactician and I thought the scoreline flattered us.”

Howe’s options have been boosted by the availability of record signing Alexander Isak, who played the first half against Wednesday.

“He's getting closer,” said Howe. “"Hopefully Saturday will do him good and he'll be involved. We want him fit and available as quickly as possible.

“I felt that 45 minutes was his maximum on Saturday."

  11. 'We have plenty of experience'published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

    Leicester City

Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward to Sky Sports: "It's a big incentive for us especially with where we are in the league table, this is a opportunity for us to go forward in a competition and do well.

"This is our sixth quarter-final under the manager. We have plenty of experience in games like this, hopefully we can use it."

  12. 'These are the games we want'published at 19:19 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "The crowd here since day one have been incredible. This is a special night, the opportunity to get into a semi-final.

"These are the games we want. Hopefully we can entertain the fans and win.

"The power of the supporters here is huge. That hasn't always been the case. We try to play a style of football they enjoy watching and will back.

"Sometimes when you lose, you feel that disappointment, it can serve as a good reminder that nothing is guaranteed."

  13. I'm not a magician - Rodgerspublished at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

    Brendan RodgersImage source, Getty Images

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers says he is "not a magician" as he tries to keep his side competing with their rivals.

Rodgers was speaking before his side travel to Newcastle United for their Carabao Cup quarter-final tie tonight.

Leicester's only outlay last summer was on defender Wout Faes and they are yet to sign any players in January.

"It's becoming a real challenge," said Rodgers.

The Foxes are 13th in the Premier League after three consecutive defeats but they go into the game against Newcastle on the back of beating Gillingham 1-0 in the FA Cup.

"I think I'm a decent coach, but I'm not a magician," added Rodgers, who took charge in 2019.

"If you look at our net spend since I've been here, it's about £10m. Compare that to our competitors, like Aston Villa, West Ham, Newcastle. It's over £250m. It's a big difference.

"If you look at Newcastle's net spend in the last year, along with the fantastic coaching of Eddie [Howe] and his staff plus the infrastructure from where they were to where they are now, they're looking to build and create something.

"They'll do it wisely and sensibly, but they have the resources to do that. So that's the modern game."

  14. Renewing acquaintancespublished at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

Man Utd v Charlton (20:00 GMT)

Manchester United host Charlton for the first time in almost 16 years tonight with the hosts looking to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup for the third time in four seasons, having last won the competition in 2017.

Charlton, who last reached the quarter-finals in 2006 when they were still a Premier League club, sit 12th in League One after winning back-to-back games for the first time since October.

The Addicks, who saw off Brighton in the last round, have not won at Old Trafford since 1986.

And this fixture appears a tough assignment for a club that moved on to a fifth manager in two years when Dean Holden took charge at The Valley in December.

  15. Mainoo has a futurepublished at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Man Utd v Charlton (20:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

I saw Kobbie Mainoo make a goalscoring contribution for Manchester United in their friendly against Cadiz in Spain last month.

The 17-year-old midfielder from Stockport has been training regularly with United's first-team and manager Erik ten Hag evidently sees him as a first-team star of the future.

  16. Team news - Heaton starts in goal for Man Utdpublished at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

Man Utd v Charlton (20:00 GMT)

Tom Heaton makes his full debut for Manchester United as he starts in goal.

There is also a first start for midfielder Kobbie Mainoo while World Cup winner Lisandro Martinez returns.

In total there are eight changes for the hosts from the Everton win in the FA Cup at the weekend.

On-loan Fulham defender Steven Sessegnon is in the Charlton side, who are captained by former West Ham youngster George Dobson.

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

Well, those two starting XIs scream 'we're taking this seriously'.

And of course they are. This is a genuine chance to win a trophy and with the way the super league lot tend to monopolise that, you have to take the real opportunities where you can.

  18. Team news - 17 changes from FA Cup gamespublished at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

Newcastle put out a much stronger team than the one who lost to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup at the weekend.

Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson and co are back.

Only Sean Longstaff and Joelinton remain in the starting XI.

  19. Newcastle 'should have played their best team'published at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

Former Newcastle United winger Chris Waddle believes Eddie Howe gave Sheffield Wednesday "a massive incentive" in their FA Cup tie by making eight changes to his team.

The Magpies suffered a shock loss to their League One opponents at Hillsborough on Saturday and Waddle believes the result was avoidable.

"Wednesday are a really big club and the atmosphere was electric, but they are in League One," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "Not many of these Newcastle players can ask to play again in their next game on Tuesday.

"If Howe had started with the team that finished, then the score would have been massively different. For me, you play your best players. If you go three or four-nil up, then you make the changes."

Telegraph football reporter Luke Edwards agreed, saying Newcastle had one eye on Tuesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final against Leicester City.

"This result probably exposes how frail their Champions League challenge is," said Edwards. "They have got a really good 13-15 players, but there are still the remnants of Steve Bruce's squad.

"They are two key injuries away from slipping. But that shouldn't take away from a fantastic season, and they have got a really important game against Leicester on Tuesday."

  20. Newcastle looking to bounce backpublished at 19:03 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2023

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

Newcastle suffered just their second loss of the season - and a shock one at that - when they were beaten at League One Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Sitting third in the Premier League after what has been a stellar campaign to date for Eddie Howe's side, they were undone by a Josh Windass double at Hillsborough.

One thing it may have exposed is the relative weakness of the players Howe has at his disposal beneath his first-choice XI, with those coming in (eight changes were made from the previous game) failing to meet the high standards set by those they replaced.

It could well end up being a mere blip in what turns out to be a brilliant season for the Toon, but they will want to bounce back in a big way this evening to stop any concerns growing.
