I'm gutted Daly hasn't got another 10 minutes to try and get her hat-trick but I'm looking forward to seeing Ebony Salmon.

She can try and test this Italian back line in the closing stages.

A standing ovation for Rachel Daly as she departs the pitch. Ebony Salmon on in her place.

Salmon used to play for Aston Villa and now plays for Houston Dash. Daly used to play for Houston and now plies her trade at Villa. Nice.

Chris Fone: I don't think this game's done yet, the Italians will keep coming, another England goal needed me thinks.

Adriana Wehrens: Totally convinced now that Rachel Daly should always play as a striker. What a header!

Hansolo: Rachel Daly, number 9, debate over.

Double change for Italy as Giada Greggi and Annamaria Serturini replace Barbara Bonansea and Martina Rossuci.

Can the visitors conjure another equaliser in the final 10 minutes?

  6. Postpublished at 77 mins

    England 2-1 Italy

Well, what a few minutes that was. Everyone seems to be catching their breath a bit now, including the players.

Just as I say that, England surge forward in search of a third goal but a Lauren James cross low into the Italy box is dealt with by the defence.

  7. Daly 'is a dream'published at 16:48 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2023

That header was unbelievable. It's such a difficult skill.

There isn't much pace on it so Daly needs to get everything right.

She's so versatile. You get quality and work rate from her in every position.

For a manager, she is a dream.

Chants of "England, England, England" to my left in the stadium. Rachel Daly celebrated with a knee slide too. Think she was relieved.

She's got two goals today and has been excellent. She's missed a few but she's scored the vital goals. Lauren James again making an impact with the assist.

    Rachel Daly (71 mins)

A far more difficult chance than the one she just missed - yet Rachel Daly buries it.

Lauren James does well out wide to keep possession and her ball in is met by a wonderful glancing header from Daly, who is almost looking away from goal yet guides it across keeper Laura Giuliani and into the far corner.

Italy are a bit peeved because a defender went down injured seconds before James whipped that cross in but England played on.

Decent response from England since seeing their lead cancelled out - and they should be ahead again.

Katie Zelem's deep corner finds a free Rachel Daly at the back post but she heads wide.

I think it's good for England because you need to come through resilient moments. They aren't always going to be unbeaten.

Teams like Italy will be at the World Cup.

Mistee: I’m sorry is this a joke!? That Italy goal is totally invalid! The ball clearly went out of play before they crossed it.

Amie Metcalfe: How are errors like the ball not being spotted going out of play by ref/lines person still allowed to happen at women’s international level, along with no goal line technology? The mind boggles.

Emma: The ball went out. Why’s there no goal line technology in women’s football?

England responded to the blow of conceding by making a triple change.

Lauren James, Chloe Kelly and Lotte Wubben-Moy are on for Alex Greenwood, Lauren Hemp and Katie Robinson.

    England 1-1 Italy

Both of those calls - whether the ball went out before the cross and whether it crossed the line - were so tight.

They were eerily similar to the infamous 'was it out?' moment with Japan and Germany in last year's men's World Cup.

  15. 'It's disappointing for England'published at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2023

    England 1-1 Italy

My initial thought was it went out at the byline before the cross even came in.

I think Ellie Roebuck can do better than that.

It did cross the goal line but it's disappointing for England.

Wow! There's no goalline technology so there's no way of knowing that went out for sure from the officials. I haven't seen a replay but it looked very tight.

Maya Le Tissier was convinced that had gone out and the England players were heavily protesting. Boos rang around the stadium too.

Either way, Italy are level! England have to respond now. This is a good test for them. It won't always be plain-sailing.

    Sofia Cantore (62 mins)

    Wow, almost out of nowhere.

England are not happy, believing that the ball went out on the left before Barbara Bonansea floated in her cross.

The ball finds substitute Sofia Cantore whose near-post header beats Ellie Roebuck despite the keeper getting a hand to it.

It drops just over the line despite Alex Greenwood's attempts to clear. No VAR, no goal-line technology so we have to go with what the on-field officials see today.

Andy G: The depth in this Lionesses squad is really impressive, when you look at the number of players missing today from the Euros team.

    England 1-0 Italy

Lauren Hemp has taken a horrible-looking boot down the Achilles from Italy full-back Valentina Bergamaschi's late challenge.

But she jumps right back up, no play-acting here.

Off she goes to deliver a cross to Rachel Daly, whose shot on the turn is blocked by a blue shirt.

  20. Postpublished at 58 mins

    England 1-0 Italy

Rare moment of bother for England as Alex Greenwood fouls Arianna Caruso out wide.

Italy swing in the free-kick but a tame header is easy for Ellie Roebuck.

Greenwood then does well to cut out Valentina Bergamaschi's cross. Decent spell for Italy.
