Niamh Charles makes an important interception to cut out a ball that would have sent Valentina Giacinti clear.

Then Barbara Bonansea tries to slip Giacinti through into the area but Ellie Roebuck races off her line to claim well.

That goal has settled England down nicely.

They are playing the ball around with confidence now.

A sniff of a second goal when Lauren Hemp robs Lisa Boattin but Italy's defence crowds her out to block an attempted pass into the box.

Jess Park with a classy give-and-go in the middle of the park and she surges into the Italy half, but then leaves the ball behind her. Got a bit excited there.

Megan Thee Scallion: So is the Rachel Daly Striker Era for England permanent now that she scored?! What a beauty of a header that was!

    Charmaine: Rachel Daly you beauty.

With Ellen White having retired following Euro 2022, there's definitely a vacancy for a focal point up front for England.

Rachel Daly has often been employed as a full-back for the Lionesses but is deployed up front by Aston Villa and she's showing today why she is a viable alternative to Alessia Russo in this role.

The atmosphere is really, really good here.

As soon as that ball got to Lauren Hemp's feet there were people getting excited.

Rachel Daly missed that cross, then reacted to get on the second coming in from the other side and made it look easy.

She has been in electric form for Villa this season and that will only help her chances of playing in an attacking role for England more often.

That's why you play her up front! If you give her the service, she won't let you down.

It's brilliant work from England, especially Lauren Hemp down the left and then it's a good delivery from Katie Robinson.

Daly just has the power and precision to guide it in.

    Rachel Daly (33 mins)

Not so errant with the header though.

Lauren Hemp waltzes through the Italy defence and although they manage to clear the ball, it goes straight to Katie Robinson out wide on the right.

She floats in a cross and Rachel Daly beats Valentina Bergamaschi in the air to head England in front.

Cracking header from the Villa player - and an assist on her full debut for Brighton's Robinson.

    England 0-0 Italy

Errant pass from Rachel Daly wastes a decent attacking position for England.

She was probably offside, although the flag didn't go up and there's no VAR in operation today.

Keira Knox: Jess Park full of confidence in her full debut for the Lionesses, things you love to see.

Rachel Daly is proving a pest to the Italy back-line.

Her two efforts - both well saved by Laura Giuliani - remain England's only two shots on target thus far.

Giugliano is back on after that collision so it seems no after-effects.

Lauren Hemp wants a free-kick on the edge of the Italy box after an arm on the shoulder from Barbara Bonansea but no dice from the referee.

Sarina Wiegman spoke about Italy's ability to transition well and we've seen a few glimpses of it with Valentina Giacinti getting in behind twice.

The first led to a comfortable save for Ellie Roebuck and the second was that sprint by Alex Greenwood. She did well to recover but England need to be wary.

That's a nasty one for Manuela Giugliano as she tussles with Lauren Hemp and the England player collapses on the back of the Italy midfielder's leg.

Her knee and ankle crumpled beneath her a bit.

Half-openings at both ends as Lauren Hemp's teasing cross is well cleared and Italy break but Alex Greenwood beats Valentina Giacinti in a one-on-one sprint.

    England 0-0 Italy

Barbara Bonansea chooses not to try to find Valentina Bergamaschi when she is in acres of space on the right.

A few seconds later, after England plugged the gap, she then tries the ball when it's not on. Strange decision-making there.

You look at Italy in their 4-4-2 and they are stopping Keira Walsh from getting on the ball, she's the heart of this England team.

It has been difficult for England to break through, they are struggling with the low block.

They're used to playing the top teams who come at us and it's normally more end-to-end, so they need to find a solution.

Nice work from Niamh Charles down England's left. She comes back inside and tees up Maya Le Tissier in the D but Italy close her down and force the shot to go well wide.

  20. Postpublished at 16 mins

    England 0-0 Italy

A robust challenge from Lauren Hemp appears to win the ball from Italy right-back Valentina Bergamaschi but she is penalised.

Italy are offside from the resulting free-kick, though.
