Sarina Wiegman said Italy could pose a challenge today because of their ability to switch game plans throughout the 90 minutes.

Against Belgium in their opener, they started with a high press but dropped to a low block.

It’s hard to see how they will go about defending this England team with their attacking depth.

Wiegman will use her bench too as she wants to see as many combinations as possible.

    England v Italy (15:15 GMT)

Manager Sarina Wiegman has welcomed the return of Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh to the England fold for Sunday's match with Italy.

Walsh, 25, missed the opening fixture because of illness, with Arsenal defender Leah Williamson filling her midfield role - but she's back in the starting XI today.

"It's really nice for her to be back. Of course she wants to be part of the team and we want to see her play, so it's really nice to have her on the pitch," said Wiegman.

"Italy are a pretty good team. If you look at the results it's probably a bit disappointing for them, but I think they've played some proper games.

"What they do tactically is they do different things in the game which will challenge us - sometimes a high press, sometimes dropping a little deeper.

"It's good for us to adapt to that and scan continuously as a team what they do and be proactive in that so we can control the game."

It's a momentous day for Italy forward Cristiana Girelli, who is celebrating her 100th international appearance this afternoon.

She will hope the visitors can put a pretty ropey run of results behind them - Italy have lost four on the spin, albeit all by one goal.

They were eliminated in the group stage at Euro 2022, beaten by both France and Belgium, and drawing with Iceland.

Virtually the entire Italy squad play their football in their home country, although there is one English-based player - Everton midfielder Aurora Galli.

Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood says she is "really enjoying my football" after a strong performance in England's opening Arnold Clark Cup victory on Thursday.

Greenwood, 29, started at left-back and provided an assist for Alessia Russo's goal in the 4-0 win over South Korea. She has been impressive in a centre-back role for City this season too.

"It's important when you're happy off the pitch, it replicates on it," said Greenwood, who wears the armband as Lionesses captain today. "I'm enjoying playing for England."

The defender was part of the squad who won Euro 2022 but did not start any of the six matches, making five substitute appearances.

"It's really healthy that we have such good competition," said Greenwood. "We have so players who can play and not just in one role, but more than one. It's only going to benefit us for the [World Cup this] summer.

"For me personally it's about whatever role I'm asked to do, doing it as best I can. Everyone will be asked to do different roles at some point and that's really important for the team."

  6. Captain to wear 'One Love' armbandpublished at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2023

    England v Italy (15:15 GMT)

England's skipper Alex Greenwood will wear the 'One Love' armband today to continue to promote inclusivity and equality.

The Lionesses' usual captain Leah Williamson - among the substitutes today - articulates its importance here.

  7. Lionesses show solidarity with Canadapublished at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2023

    England v Italy (15:15 GMT)

England will be wearing purple wristbands during today's game to display their support for gender equality and in a show of solidarity for the Canadian women's national team.

Canada's players are in dispute with Canada Soccer because of concerns over funding cuts and a lack of pay equality - and had threatened strike action over the issue before deciding to call it off.

Before their SheBelieves Cup match with the USA, the Canadian Soccer Players Association said the team would "continue to wear purple until our association has standards in place that ensure equal treatment and opportunity".

Both teams wore purple tape on their wrists during the game.

In the centre forward position, Cristiana Girelli is one of the best players with her head. Italy are very dangerous from set-pieces with her in the team.

Italy will be looking to respond to what was a disappointing performance against Belgium.

England manager Sarina Wiegman on ITV: "The camp has been nice."

On Brighton striker Katie Robinson getting her first start: "She is very quick and very agile. We want her to run behind and be involved in possession when we need it.

"Hopefully, she can attack crosses from the opposite side and also deliver some too."

On Jess Park's position: "She started out wide but at her club, she can also come inside and play as a 10.

"We want to see her as a 10 today to see where she is at in this moment and where she relates to this team."

On Rachel Daly's switch from full-back to up front: "With three games we want to try some things and one of those is that Daly starts as number nine."

On what to expect from Italy: "I think there will be more duels and they will challenge us more in possession so we need to prepared for that."

After two matches, Wales sit second in the group, following Saturday's goalless draw with Iceland.

    England v Italy (15:15 GMT)

OK, there's only one game apiece gone - but in a four-team tournament, that means we're 33% of the way through.

An England win today would put the Lionesses in pole position to retain the Arnold Clark Cup.

But whatever the combination of results, it will go down to the final game against Belgium, with the destination of the trophy unable to be decided today.

Although an England win and a Belgium defeat would mean it would need a huge goal difference swing for the Lionesses to be denied.

  16. What is the Arnold Clark Cup?published at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2023

    England v Italy (15:15 GMT)

The four-team, round-robin international tournament sees each side play each other once. The team top of the table after three matches are crowned champions.

The cup is one of several mini-tournaments in the women's international football calendar, with England now hosting their own rather than taking part in the annual SheBelieves Cup, hosted by the United States.

This year the Lionesses - up to fourth in the world as of December 2022 - will start clear favourites against 15th-ranked South Korea, world number 17 Italy, and Belgium, who are 20th.

England won the inaugural version of the competition in 2021, seeing off three of the world's top seven ranked countries in Canada, Spain and Germany to claim the title.

  17. Italy beaten by late Belgium winnerpublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2023

    England v Italy (15:15 GMT)

Italy's start to the competition was not so enjoyable as they were beaten by Tessa Wullaert's 90th-minute strike for Belgium.

The Belgians, ranked 20th in the world, led through Marie Detruyer's early goal but Italy responded well and deservedly levelled courtesy of Manuela Giugliano's wonderful outside-of-the-foot strike midway through the second half.

From there, Italy, 17th in the Fifa rankings, dominated but were caught by a late sucker punch from former Manchester City striker Wullaert.

That result leaves them needing to beat England today to have a realistic chance of taking the silverware back home with them.

England began the defence of the Arnold Clark Cup with a comfortable 4-0 victory over South Korea in Milton Keynes on Thursday night.

Chelsea's Lauren James was a standout performer as she scored her first goal for England in the second half after earlier winning a penalty, which Georgia Stanway coolly fired in for the opener.

Chloe Kelly and Manchester United's Alessia Russo were also on target for the European champions - read the full report here.
