I've been admiring the defending from Manchester United in the last 10 minutes. They look so calm and that doesn't bode well for Newcastle.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was moaning at the assistant referee just then for not sticking his flag up straight away when Kieran Tripper crossed the ball.

The guidance for officials is to keep their flags down if there is a chance of a goal being scored, which there obviously was.

It seems Fernandes is not aware. Either that or he just likes complaining.

  18. 'Annoying' Man Utdpublished at 18:06 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

    Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Wembley Stadium

After Erik ten Hag's comments on Friday, there is an irony in Manchester United being jeered by the Newcastle fans for the time they are taking to get the ball back in play.

They are using all their experience now to try and take the sting out of this game.

Atletico Madrid have made an art form of making time disappear when they are in front.

Manchester United are not at the same level but they are in no rush with anything they are doing at the moment.

  19. Postpublished at 72 mins

    Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

They've been a bit backs to the wall at times, but this is some solid game management from Manchester United.

Newcastle were always going to come out and throw everything at them, but they've limited them to few actual shots at goal.

The latest example is Kieran Trippier being caught offside ahead of a low ball into the middle that David de Gea has to tip away.

  20. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 69 mins

Marcel Sabitzer and Scott McTominay are on to bring some grit to midfield and see the game out.

Fred and Wout Weghorst are off.
