The West Ham man is in on goal after a fired ball forward. He has a defender for company but a better first contact will set up a shot. Instead, he allows the ball to move away from him and the defender gets back and covers for Gavin Bazunu to claim.

The resulting corner from Jarrod Bowen is poor and headed away at the near post.

The Hammers have a bit more of a spring in their step now, their fans a bit more positive.

The home side charge away down the left, with Emerson overlapping. He fires in a low cross but it is straight at Gavin Bazunu.

Soon after, a chipped cross from Emerson is put behind by Mohamed Elyounoussi for a corner.

It is not great for the fans having to wait for so long but you could tell from the first replay that was going to be tough for VAR Peter Bankes to rule on.

He had to draw a line between players and then measure it with the defender behind Aguerd.

I can imagine there was a bit of tension in Stockley Park as time ticked on then.

Lukasz Fabianski pulls out a brilliant low stop to deny Romain Perraud after the ball breaks to the full-back in the box. The angled drive was comfortably going in before the Hammers keeper got down.

Again, there are going to questions for the officials there. Did that decision really need to take so long?

Almost a mood changer! Nayef Aguerd rises highest to power home a header from the free-kick but the flag is up.

This is a bit better from the Hammers. A forward pass to try and get Danny Ings in. It is too heavy, though, and Gavin Bazunu gathers.

Soon after, Duje Caleta-Carr clatters Jarrod Bowen to give West Ham a free-kick they can swing into the box.

When you've got a game in front of your home fans, the least you can do is come out with a burst of energy to get fans off their feet but they've done the complete opposite.

West Ham lack any dominance.

It feels like the last 20 or so minutes have been West Ham doing something average on the pitch or the ref making a decision against them, followed by moans and groans from the stands. This is not a happy place.

There have been a few grumblings from the home fans at what they perceive to be negative passes from the West Ham players.

On a couple of occasions, they have been in a position to progress the ball close to the halfway line but they have turned back instead and rotated the ball amongst the defenders.

Southampton are looking to exploit space behind Emerson on their right.

It has not been the greatest start.
