Nicholas: They won't get as many plaudits but Gundogan and Rodri are controlling this match.

He's been involved now in nine goals in 15 games since the World Cup.
Bazunu did well to get a hand down to stop the first rifled effort, but he couldn't do anything about the second one.
Jack Grealish
His excellent form continues!
Jack Grealish appears to beat the offside trap and is sent in on goal. His first shot is denied but he is quick on the rebound to stab in.
VAR is checking it... and the goal stands!
That is now nine goal involvements in 15 appearances since the end of the World Cup for Grealish.
On fire!

Arsenal haven't won at Anfield in 10 years, gap down to 5 points, still got to go to City and Newcastle, could this be the beginning of the end for their challenge.

Southampton have failed to win any of the last six games in which they've conceded the first goal. They have only drawn one of those, and lost the other five.
Southampton 0-1 Man City
John Stones is dispossessed and Kamaldeen Sulemana charges forward. He goes down under pressure from a couple of Manchester City players, no free kick, but the loose ball is picked up by Carlos Alcaraz, whose shot on the edge of the area is blocked.
Southampton 0-1 Man City
So close for Ilkay Gundogan as he takes advantage of Ainsley Maitland-Niles being on the ground after a good sliding challenge to take the ball from Jack Grealish but bends his shot just wide of the far post.
Southampton 0-1 Man City
Southampton have a free kick, which Manchester City aren't happy about and will be even more frustrated if the Saints score from it.
No danger of that as first Armel Bella-Kotchap mistimes his run for James Ward-Prowse's delivery and then balloons his header from the offside position way, way wide.

Southampton need to start the game quickly with their heads held high. They weren’t too bad in the first half and if they keep creating good chances I think they should get a deserved goal.

The danger is they go chasing the game a bit more and then that opens the game up which gives Man City more opportunities. I don't think they need to change too much to be honest.
Southampton 0-1 Man City
Nice play by Manchester City early in this half as Jack Grealish cuts in from the left and slips the ball through to Ilkay Gundogan inside the box but his cross is deflected behind.

We're up and running in the second half.
FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Nottingham Forest
Aston Villa
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to BBC Sport: "Tough match, we knew before [that it would be]. We had to impose our style. I think today was very important to win, the second thing was tactically how we can win. I tried to understand it quickly and we progressively got better. We didn't want to let them transition, we didn't want to give them a lot of corners, and then we had three or four chances and scored two goals.
"I'm very happy for the fans but as well we have to be balanced."
On how Ollie Watkins is performing: "Ollie is working very well and his commitment with the team is very important. When he's scoring we're very happy for him. He's helping with his quality. Everybody is supporting him, trying to assist him, like today how Jacob Ramsey decided to assist him. We are very happy for everybody, Ollie is scoring and for him, [it's] very good."
On Aston Villa's aims for the season: "Those three points can help us to be in our target, which first is really the top 10. Then there's the more options to be a candidate to play for Europe. Getting points like today then we can be. Playing with big teams like next week against Newcastle, if we want to get it we have to improve more than what we are [currently] doing. It's going to be a top match, more difficult today and we will need to win if we want to keep the position for Europe."
FT: Fulham 0-1 West Ham
Fulham
Fulham boss Marco Silva, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think everyone could see it was handball [in the build-up to West Ham's goal]. Everyone saw it. Difficult for us to understand how. My players, the ones that were involved in the situation, told me straight away that it was handball. How it is possible with VAR, the VAR didn't check, tell the referee that it was a clear handball from the player and of course the goal should be disallowed and in that moment it should be 0-0, not 1-0 to West Ham. I don't know. What I know, the rules are clear for everyone, every goal should be checked, they should look for all the instances before the goal.
On not being able to make the most of the possession they had: "It is a big frustration for us. The possession for us is not enough, it is not our target, it is not what you want. You want to have the ball but create chance against the opposition side. we knew before the match that we were going to have the possession. West Ham is coming here to try and they did it, even if they start with two strikers up front, just to explore the offensive transitions, some counter-attacks, some bad decisions from ourselves and some set pieces is what we expected and they did it. Always low blocks, nine ten players around their box and in the first half we were too static, not dynamic. It was a bit strange because we didn't provoke them, didn't run in behind, everything was too static and too many sideways and backward passes and of course when this happened.
"Second half was slightly different, a bit more emotional. With Tom Cairney on the pitch and Manor [Solomon] we created a bit more and with another midfielder we tried of course. We had a couple of chances, Andreas [Pereira] was one on one with Lukasz Fabianski. We didn't score but it was not our best performance. When you don't perform at your best this can happen.
On getting back to winning ways: "It is up to us to keep working, we have not stopped working, not just because we didn't get three points today that we have stopped. The players work hard and the last week was a good example. We are not confidence and the last few results impacted that. We know the standards that we have to get to and we have to do much better to win three points again."

That's fair Vincent. It was excellent defending and just as crucial to Erling Haaland's header for ensuring Manchester City are ahead at the break.

Vincent: Amazing how well Nathan Ake played Kamaldeen Sulemana on that breakaway. Not only did he show lighting pace to get back, but kept him on his weaker leg foot the whole time, and that forced the “awful touch.” Barely got a mention, but worthy of a goal; well played Ake!

Pep Guardiola will be delighted to go in at half-time one up. Southampton have probably been the better of the two sides but with the quality of Erling Haaland, you present him with a chance, and nine times out of 10 he will put it in the back of the net.
Goals have been an issue for Southampton all season and they find themselves a goal down.
