Calm down Dennis... let's not Jinx Villa (as a life long Villa fan, we don't do jinxes well...)

The offside flag is up so this wouldn't have counted even had the ball found the net.

But a dinked cross from Alexander Isak to Callum Wilson, followed by a good save by Emi Martinez shows the two Newcastle forwards can link up pretty well.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

Nick Pope is fouled as he comes to gather the corner and Newcastle survive.

The changes come, with Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy withdrawn for Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson.

Two up top, just as at Brentford in the second half last week.

Villa can't make anything of the first corner, but they come again and win another.

Looks like Callum Wilson will also be coming on for Newcastle shortly.

Villa continue to look the bigger threat. Ashley Young's fizzed cross hits Kieran Trippier and goes behind for a corner.

Villa won't get 4th. They'd need to win their remaining tough fixtures, and 2 of the 3 teams above them to suffer a catastrophic run of results.

Newcastle are offering a bit more this half.

Kieran Trippier is set up for a cross from the right but Tyrone Mings cuts it out to clear on the volley. Trippier then fouls Douglas Luiz in trying to get back on the ball.

RE 13:29. If that's true it's just another example of the embarrassing state of Chelsea at the moment. Fanfare for a formerly sacked manager who just lost his last 2 games in charge. Difficult to back the club I've supported for 35 years right now.

Miguel Almiron is warming up for Newcastle. Another man Eddie Howe will surely turn to if things don't change.

Newcastle are quickly down the other end on an attack. Jacob Murphy is found on the right and he drives a low shot from the edge of the box that flashes past the far post.

It's the closest they have come to a goal.

    Oh, great save!

Ollie Watkins continues to torment the Newcastle defence. He runs in behind again before cutting back in from the left and firing a low shot that Nick Pope blocks with his boot.

How long does Eddie Howe give this before Callum Wilson becomes a very attractive option from the bench?

Newcastle win a free-kick early in the half, which Kieran Trippier chips into the box only for Sven Botman to foul Douglas Luiz.

Villa will be targeting a repeat of the first 45 minutes.

It's hard to see how Newcastle can be any worse than they were before the break.

It is back under way with no changes to either side.

  18. Brentford more difficult than Chelsea - Lopeteguipublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 15 April 2023

    Wolves v Brentford (15:00BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Molineux

Wolves eased their relegation worries with a very welcome win against Chelsea at Molineux last weekend.

Now they face Brentford, looking to secure back-to-back league victories for only the second time in 13 months.

However, in his programme notes, Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui warns his side are facing a tough test, harder, in fact, than that posed by Chelsea.

"It's going to be a very different match to the one we experienced against Chelsea," he said.

"For me, it's going to be a lot more difficult.

"Brentford are a very special team and a very strong team in all phases of play."

I'm hearing there's going to be some Frank Lampard fanfare before the match, banners, video montages of the Chelsea manager from back in the day... just to hope a little bit of that sparkle rubs off on the Blues' 11 today.

    Scott Minto
Former Chelsea and West Ham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Eddie Howe will be the happier manager, just to be 1-0 down.

I expect a reaction from Newcastle after the break.
