Leicester City and Everton had to settle for a draw in a chaotic match which leaves both in deep trouble at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

The two clubs started the game in the bottom three but a point was enough to drag Leicester out of the drop zone on goal difference, while Everton stay 19th, one point behind 17th-placed Leeds.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring with just his second goal of the season from the penalty spot, picking himself up to convert after being bundled over by Timothy Castagne.

The lead lasted just seven minutes as the hosts equalised through Caglar Soyuncu, who rolled home a cool finish from Wout Faes' knockdown.

And Leicester turned the game around after 33 minutes as the sprightly Jamie Vardy latched on to James Maddison's through ball before rounding Jordan Pickford and stroking home.

The Toffees should have levelled before half-time but Calvert-Lewin contrived to miss an open goal from a couple of yards with the ball appearing to strike his heel, before Leicester broke down the other end and Vardy struck the crossbar.

There was still time in a breathless first half for Pickford to save Maddison's penalty, which was struck straight down the middle by the England midfielder.

It proved costly as the visitors drew level nine minutes after the restart when Alex Iwobi guided in a low finish, but neither side were able to find a winner.

  3. 'Vardy looked like his old self'published at 22:57 British Summer Time 1 May 2023

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Dean Smith to Sky Sports: "We were second best for long periods. It became a basketball game. We wanted a game where we could have control.

"It looked a soft penalty but I could understand why it was given. Vardy looked like his old self, a threat in behind. I'm really pleased for him - back scoring goals.

"We had to find a way into the game for Maddison. When we moved him inside the pitch we started to play like we wanted to."

On why James Maddison took the penalty: "Simple, he's on penalties. Kel [Iheanacho] was on pens at Man City and took one against Wolves. The keeper has been brave to stand up. I think it was a fair result."

On whether Maddison will stay on penalties: "We'll see. We'll have a look at it in training. The challenge is what we thought it would be. We knew today's result wouldn't define what happens. We come out of the bottom three. Four games to go, 12 points to play for."

Ini-Iso Adiankpo: Contrary to what I expected, it was a fun and exciting game. Everton had strong intent and took the heat to Leicester.

Luke McDonnell: It's not looking good for Everton. It's going to be strange seeing them in the championship

  5. 'Held our nerve'published at 22:55 British Summer Time 1 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Sean Dyche, speaking to Sky Sports, says: "We held our nerve, kept trying to create things and overall it's a good performance, although we didn't get the three points we were after.

"Most of the first half we were excellent. Their goalkeeper has made a couple of brilliant saves. Dom [Calvert-Lewin] missed one but looked sharper and quicker and will be a real weapon for us. His true fitness is coming back, he looks strong and alert.

"I didn't come here for a walk in the park, I knew it would be a challenge and we're at a point a game. The only crime tonight was two really soft goals but the mentality is what we want from the team."

On Seamus Coleman's injury: "It's really unfortunate. We're waiting on news, it could be serious, a knee injury. I thought he was terrific."

Unfortunately the draw does neither Leicester or Everton much good. Everton are in real trouble I think. Can't see them getting anything in the next two games, and even Wolves looks difficult. Leeds and Everton to join Saints I reckon...

  7. 'That's the performance level we need to keep working to'published at 22:46 British Summer Time 1 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Sean Dyche to BBC Sport: "I'm more pleased with the performance [than the result]. We came here to get all three. A lot of the play was very good from us tonight.

"We had 23 efforts at goals and a lot of good ones at it. We've been working with the players on the mentality to free them up. Dom [Calvert-Lewin] is getting stronger and sharper and we're getting bodies in better areas.

"People giving maximum will count. It's another point, a positive point for many reasons. That's the performance level we need to keep working to and eradicate some of the negative details.

"All games in the Premier League are tricky. We just stepped off it for a couple of games but it's back on tonight."

On Jordan Pickford's penalty notes: "We try to tick a few boxes and do things as correctly as we can and give players the best opportuntiy to perform."

On the save: "It's not an easy one but he did well."

On Seamus Coleman's injury: "It's a knee injury, It doesn't look too good but we'll wait and see. He's been terrific so it's a loss for us."

  8. Schmeichel praises 'brave' Pickford penalty savepublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 1 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-2 Everton

Ex-Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has been giving his views on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's penalty save to deny James Maddison.

Pickford's drinks battle had graphics on of where Youri Tielemans, Jamie Vardy and James Maddison like to hit their penalties.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Schmeichel said: "Personally it's not something I've ever done but it seems to be the trend and it clearly works so maybe I should, but I have a different process."

On Pickford's decision to stay in the middle of the goal and not dive one way or the other, Schmeichel added: "It looks strange and it's incredibly brave, particularly in this situation.

"If Everton go 3-1 up that's probably the game. You have to be brave enough to do it and it takes some doing."

  9. 'Probably the worst we've played'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 1 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-2 Everton

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Dean Smith to BBC Sport: "We were second best in the first half. I wanted it to be a little bit tighter. We knew we'd have to defend the second ball. We never covered the half-spaces well enough.

"We came back which is what we needed to do and had some good chances in the second half.

"The season was never going to be defined by this. There are still 12 points to play for.

"This was probably the worst we've played in four games so far. The important thing is you don't lose these games."

  10. 'A basketball game'published at 22:34 British Summer Time 1 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-2 Everton

    Leicester City

Leicester goalkeeper Daniel Iversen, speaking to Sky Sports, says: "It was a basketball game and we wanted to take more control - we have to work on that and avoid that against Fulham.

"In the Premier League it was my busiest night, I just tried to do my job. We only got one point, but we came for three.

"We're really disappointed [in the dressing room] and I think it's one of worst games we have played for many games.

"Everton did really well to do a basketball game, we were losing too many balls and we have to do better."

  11. 'I did my homework' - Pickford on penalty savepublished at 22:27 British Summer Time 1 May 2023

    FT: Leicester 2-2 Everton

    Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, tells Sky Sports: "We're both fighting, both down there and there's a bit of anxiety on the pitch. We got the first goal, which was nice and I thought we played a brilliant 20 minutes and did what the gaffer wants, then we dropped off.

"From the fans' perspective it was a good game to watch, we created a lot of chances and their goalkeeper made some good saves. We missed chances, but created the most since the new manager has come in so it was a plus, but also a negative.

"I thought we were brilliant, it was just those final details with the delivery. Small details win games, but we didn't get beat. Brighton next Monday so rest, recovery and get ready for the game.

"It's a point and we don't come away from Leicester with zero. We know we're still in the bottom three and it's very tight down there. We roll our sleeves up and keep working hard with a fighting spirit."

On the penalty save from James Maddison's spot-kick, he added: "I did my homework. I called it this morning where I would go. He is a good player and he would've expected me to move but I double-bluffed him and got one up on him.

"It was a big moment and I'm happy to save it, it's what I'm there for."

Seth Gogo Egoeh: I'm surprised that Sean Dyche didn't make any changes apart from the enforced change. His inability to make good subs is costing Everton. Gray and Maupay should have come on.

As an Evertonian I can't bear the thought of us going down, but I can't imagine how it would be any different next season if we don't?

It's about focusing on the job in hand and performing collectively.

Sean Dyche admitted Everton were a bit nervy before this game and I'm not sure if that was the right thing to say.

I think they are in massive trouble, they have a tricky run-in and they are building this new stadium.

We know what happens from a player's point of view, they will want to jump ship.

So Leicester City played Everton, and the losers were Everton, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest, and the winners were West Ham and Bournemouth. Makes perfect sense

    Birdbrain

That is the result that Forest and Leeds Fans were almost definitely hoping for. No one is seeming to be able to get a clear upper hand out of the 4 teams. This game is another example.
