  2. 'I felt part of the squad from the first day'published at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Cyprus

Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn tells BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "I couldn't have asked for more. I only found out this morning. It was a nervous wait. I didn't sleep well last night. I was really proud and just looking forward to the game. To come out with a 3-0 win was perfect.

"All my family are here, my nana from up in Invergordon has come down. I'm going to see them now and I hope to see smiles on their faces.

"It's good for all the lads to get off to a winning start, three points in the group and hopefully we can kick on from here.

"We expected to have quite a lot of the ball, which we did. It was about staying patient and moving them into positions we wanted to exploit. They had a few counter attacks and dangerous moments but all in all we defended really well and controlled the game. There were a few nervy moments before we scored the second.

"The way the lads and the staff have handled everything with me has made it so easy. I've been welcomed so well and I felt part of the squad from the first day. It's testament to them and I just went along with it. It's been a really good experience so far and many more to come."

  4. Substitutes gave Scotland 'energy'published at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Cyprus

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke tells BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "It's something we spoke a lot about, getting off to a good start. We started really well. The movement, the rotation of players, the creation of space was all good. It took us 20 minutes before Mr McGinn got into his usual spot. We deserved the lead at that time.

"I felt after 65 minutes we needed more energy on the pitch. It's fantastic when you look at your bench and you can bring on Scott McTominay and Ryan Christie - both key players in getting the second and third goals, which makes it a more comfortable scoreline.

"It's nice to have the last couple of minutes without having your heart in your mouth."

On goalkeeper Angus Gunn's debut, Clarke said: "I just felt it was a good game for Angus to come in. I thought he did well, his handling was good. He didn't have a lot to do or big saves to make. Everything he did was clean, apart from that slip that made everyone a little nervous."

On facing Spain on Tuesday, Scotland head coach Steve Clarke said: "We have to play as well as we can play."

On striker Che Adams, who went off injured, Clarke commented: "He has a tight calf. It's far too early to tell whether he'll be affected for the game on Tuesday against Spain."

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke tells the assembled media in the Hampden auditorium: "Some good things today, some not so good. The first 30 minutes, we were really good.

"The press wasn't quite right at times, we were a bit casual at times. You're always looking for the perfect performance."

  7. Scotland 'the better team'published at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Cyprus

Cyprus head coach Temuri Ketsbaia tells BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "I believe we lost to the better team. Scotland deserved to win the game, well done to them. Congratulations. I'm disappointed that we didn't give our best.

"We have a lot of young players in the team and hopefully in the future we will get a better result than we had today.

"We tried to change our formation, we tried to put more offensive players. It cost us because we conceded two easy goals."

Cyprus head coach Temuri Ketsbaia tells the media: "I'd like to congratulate Scotland. It was a nice game but I'm very disappointed.

"Scotland have some good players. Imagine having a Manchester United player on the bench."

On Scotland's chances of qualifying from the group, he added: "Why not? Spain are big favourites but second place is open."

  9. 'Pitch underfoot was a bit tricky'published at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Cyprus

Scotland scorer John McGinn tells BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "We're delighted with three goals, a clean sheet and a win. But we've set standards now that we need to build on and most of that second half doesn't represent what we want. As much as we're delighted, we're aware we can still improve.

"We've got a settled squad now, we know what each other's qualities are, how to play with each other, what we're capable of. If anything, if you're looking for an excuse, the pitch underfoot was a bit tricky.

"Overall, the starts to the campaign in previous years haven't been good enough, today we go away with three points. I know I'm being a bit moany but we're delighted in the end.

"It's always important to get the first goal. It's easy to write off teams before they even come out and play. We did have opportunities to make it two before half-time and we didn't take them. In the second, it did get a bit nervy. We've been in games in qualification campaigns before where those turn into 1-1, but we got the second goal and it was a bit of relief.

"Lyndon Dykes gives us something different to Che Adams. It's great to see him back after his illness."

It's difficult to give an opinion on Angus Gunn, because he's had nothing to do. He's been edged in gently. He'll be tested more on Tuesday and we'll be able to give an honest opinion.

Defensively, I thought Ryan Porteous was outstanding in the first half. Everything he did smacked of quality and class. What I really liked was his positive passing. His positioning was good but when he got the ball it was sharp and crisp. That's the way it should be played at the back.

I think when you consider it was the first camp they've had together in quite some time, that opening 45 was good enough. They controlled the ball without creating too many opportunities.

Second half was below par until the last 10 minutes when the subs made an impact and got up to speed with the game.

It swung both ways but as a team performance, as a collective - first game, three goals, clean sheet. It's everything you'd want.

We've got to thank (Cyprus head coach Temuri) Ketsbaia for actually attacking us and leaving the spaces to be exploited. That was a huge change in the game that allowed the game to open up for the two goals at the end.

It was a really flat second half. The tempo, pace, sharpness, quality of passing wasn't there.

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Cyprus

    Craig Levein
Former Scotland manager on BBC Sportsound

Never in doubt! The first half was good, we could have taken advantage of that and been more goals ahead at half-time. In the second half we lost our way a bit, got into a trough and weren't testing the backline of the Cypriots.

The game needed something, it had gone stale, and the substitutes were the turning point and gave the team the boost they needed to get back on the front foot. Steve Clarke will be pleased with his performance, in terms of making the subs at the right time.

  16. Scotland 'need to improve'published at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

    FT: Scotland 3-0 Cyprus

Scotland scorer John McGinn tells Viaplay: "We need to be honest with ourselves, we need to improve if we're going to get to the Euros.

"It's the first time in a long time we've won the opening game, we need to take the positives but if we want to move to the next step, we need to improve. We had that feeling walking off.

"The improvement needs to be there Tuesday (against Spain). We need to be brighter, we looked a bit flat. I know Cyprus made it difficult for us, but with the players we've got on the park, we know we can improve.

"I'm being a bit picky. We got three goals but it's one of those days that could have ended 1-1. We know each other inside out now, it's a settled squad. I'm maybe being a bit harsh."

I just don't think Ryan Jack pops up in those two areas. It's not in his nature to be that high up. The substitution has changed the game. What a difference Scott McTominay's made and he's got that instinctive quality and he's so calm under pressure.
