  1. Gogic to start in central defence?published at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

    Scotland v Cyprus (14:00)

Temuri Ketsbaia makes sweeping changes - six of them - despite Cyprus' heartening 3-2 win away to Israel in their last outing.

Despite his two goals in that November friendly, Omonia striker Charalambous Charalambous drops to the bench along with defender Marios Antoniades and midfielder Danilo Spoljaric.

Defenders Ioannis Kousoulos, Nicholas Ioannou, Konstantinos Laifis and veteran Valentin Roberge come into the side, with Kostakis Artymatas starting in midfield along with Grigoris Kastanos, who is expected to support lone striker Ioannis Pittas.

Uefa's official line-up graphic places St Mirren's Alex Gogic at the heart of defence, with Standard Liege's Laifis in central midfield. But those position could be reversed, given the latter usually plays at centre-half and Gogic is more recognised as a midfielder.

In a nice bit of symmetry, having just renewed his contract, Steve Clarke's first match in his original deal in 2019 was here at the national stadium against Cyprus.

Things were a little different back then and a look at the team and bench illustrates it perfectly. Among the starters that day were David Marshall, Stephen O'Donnell, Charlie Mulgrew and Eamonn Brophy. Among the subs were Scott Bain, Johnny Russell, Marc McNulty, Liam Palmer and Stuart Findlay, not to mention the late match winner, Oli Burke.

Some things stay the same, however. Still in the starting line-up, as they were four years ago are Andy Robertson, Callum McGregor and John McGinn. Manager Clarke will hope for more of the same from his captain - last time out against them at Hampden, he hit a rocket into the left hand corner.

Porteous has another opportunity to impress. There is a fair bit of pressure on him. In a game you'd expect Scotland to dominate, you've got to keep it tight at the back. He has little experience of this level and he's playing in front of a relatively inexperienced keeper.

Ryan Porteous turns 23 today. Will it be a happy birthday for the Scotland and Watford centre-back? He already has a present in the shape of a second Scotland cap.

Steve Clarke's first match in charge of Scotland was also against Cyprus back in 2019. Oliver Burke's late goal secured a 2-1 win.

Later in that campaign, it was a 2-1 Scotland win in Cyprus with John McGinn getting the winning goal.

  8. Gunn gets the nod in goalpublished at 13:04 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

    Scotland v Cyprus (14:00)

There was always going to be at least one debutant in the Scotland line-up today and it is Angus Gunn who starts in goal for Steve Clarke.

Regular first choice Craig Gordon is in recovery following a serious injury picked up at Hearts last year.

Norwich City's Gunn follows in his father Bryan's footsteps, with the elder Gunn having played six times for Scotland.
