I don't know what the stats are, but I am sure they will show dominance by Scotland - in terms of possession anyway. We talked about not having a striker at the highest international level, but Che Adams has been really good. There's a lot of hugely positive things and we have looked comfortable at the back.

While Scotland have held most of the ball and take a lead into half-time, their heatmap tells a story.

Cyrpus' central defence is forcing the Scots wide. Che Adams has only touched the ball twice in the away box. He's also only touched the ball 13 times in total, the same as Angus Gunn.

Very happy with the controlling of the game, but you've got to expect the Cypriots will change it. Nothing is ever certain. We've said it before - 1-0 is a dangerous scoreline. I'm not writing them off yet.

Scotland have performed well and perhaps should be further ahead. That said, a little more direct threat on goal wouldn't go amiss.

As the game wears on, if they keep the performance level high, they'll get more consistent clear opportunities to exploit.

The incisive interplay between John McGinn and Che Adams was exactly what's needed to cut through this Cypriot wall.

The cushion of a second goal should be the springboard to a more comfortable scoreline.

The manager will be very happy. They've moved the ball about well, it's a good goal. Now he'll be asking if they can put their foot down, can they get two or three? It's just been that final third, the last pass, that's let them down ever so slightly.

Grigoris Kastanos fouls Grant Hanley, giving Scotland a free-kick near halfway. It's a bit of a relief for the hosts as the visitors had men spare as they tried to push forward.

This may only be his second cap, but Ryan Porteous is anchoring the Scottish backline.

Constant cries to his teammates to push up and not sit so deep. He's been more vocal than the experienced Grant Hanley and Kieran Tierney alongside him.

Impressive showing again so far from the birthday boy.

A fair few oh's exhaled at that slip from Angus Gunn.

It was raining early doors in Glasgow so the surface will be a little bit slippy, but thankfully for him, when he landed on his backside, the ball was in his possession.

Could have been left with a red face on his debut...

  20. Scots must avoid frustrationpublished at 14:34 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

    Scotland 1-0 Cyprus

    Leanne Crichton
    Ex-Scotland international on BBC Sportsound

What's impressing me about Scotland is their work rate. It is easy to become frustrated when a team is defending in numbers. But I just noticed Andy Robertson telling his teammates to calm down. They just need to keep going and the opportunities will come.
