Now the Blades have held up their part of the bargain and won promotion all eyes in the Steel City will cross to rivals Sheffield Wednesday to see if they can do the same from League One.

The Owls are third in the table with two games to play and, barring a huge collapse from top two Plymouth and Ipswich, will have to look to go up through the play-offs.

Should Darren Moore's men fail to get the job done then, for the first time since 1988-89, the two clubs will be separated by two divisions.

    Ouch.

Sheffield United midfielder Tommy Doyle, on loan from Manchester City, speaking to Sky Sports:

"This is what we all wanted. We've had a trip to Wembley and now we've won promotion to the Premier League. It's been perfect, thank you to everybody. It's been enjoyable.

"It's been great fun. Now we can celebrate what we've done, which is important. Everyone's just so happy."

On the prospect of returning to Sheffield United again next season: "It's a brilliant club, brilliant lads and I've enjoyed it. You never know."

The Covid-19 pandemic presented problems for all teams across the football pyramid.

However, it's arguable that, in a football sense at least, few suffered as much as Sheffield United did from playing behind closed doors.

In their final game before the season was halted in March 2020 the Blades beat Norwich 1-0 to sit in sixth spot in the Premier League. A tilt at European football looked to be on the cards and they even had an outside shot of gatecrashing the top four.

Then everything stopped and when the season recommenced the Blades could not continue the form they had shown previously, eventually finishing a still very creditable ninth.

By the time a limited number of supporters were let back in for the final game of the following season in May 2021 their relegation back to the Championship had long since been confirmed and popular boss Chris Wilder had left.

Well, the Blades are back in the big time now and with this passionate support behind them they'll hope they can bloody a few noses once again.

More from Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom to Sky Sports:

"I feel lucky I've been working here before I took the job - I stepped up a couple of times to work with these guys but in the meantime you are working for the club, you are getting to know everyone, so you become a part of what is already here.

"So undoubtedly you feel more responsibility when you step up and take it [the job], I was so disappointed and angry last season. I don't think that will ever go because I want to use that.

"We've had 18-19 months at it and we've sustained it for that long period of time, so no one deserves it more than these players. Whenever it's got sticky, got tough, we know we've been holding this form for a long, long time now.

"We were very determined internally - we didn't shout things from the rooftops but we've known every day this is what we've been after. That's all we wanted.

"When I took over, the talk wasn't about promotion but these guys have done it before - a big bulk of our squad are winners and I felt that last season, when we had a bigger group if you like, was a great chance.

"But in my mind promotion was always going to be the intention, always going to be the goal and why wouldn't it be?"

Blades anthem Greasy Chip Butty rings around Bramall Lane one last time as the players head down the tunnel to continue their celebrations.

I dare say a few of the fans will now be heading for the bars and pubs in town to start their own parties.

Think there could be a few people in South Yorkshire who decide to work from home tomorrow...

Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp speaking to Sky Sports:

"We've worked hard for this. Obviously missing out last year in the play-offs hurt and we said at the beginning of the season make sure that feeling is in there again.

"In the end we've done it with a few games to spare, so credit to the lads, they've worked incredibly hard all season. It has been comfortable in the end.

"Credit to Burnley, they've been the best side in the league and are deservedly champions, but personally that's three promotions in seven years for Sheffield United, the club I support."

  11. 'Have to enjoy special and significant win'published at 22:25 British Summer Time 26 April 2023

    Sheffield United

Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom to Sky Sports:

"I don't think it will sink in for a while but I'm just determined to enjoy tonight and make sure everyone else enjoys tonight - it's a shame we've got three more games left!

"But we've got to enjoy it, you enjoy every win - and when it's a win as special and significant as this, we are going to have a good time.

"I thought in the second half we were much better, we stepped on to them a lot more and we changed the midfield around slightly, we went to a three-man midfield.

"West Brom are very well organised and if we didn't get through them in the first two or three passes, they had two banks of four and were difficult to break down and were breaking on us. So we had to work hard but we've had that in every game."

This is the third time the Blades have been promoted to the Premier League, with all coming via second-placed league finishes.

Paul Heckingbottom's men have spent the vast majority of the season in second-place behind title winners Burnley.

It's two days short of four years since Chris Wilder, who had guided them to the League One title in 2017, ended their 12-year top-flight hiatus.

The Blades-supporting gaffer then led them to an impressive ninth-placed finish in 2019-20 in their first season back in the Premier League.

However, things fell apart the following campaign both on and off the pitch. Wilder left the club in March before they finished bottom of the table with just 23 points under the caretaker charge of Heckingbottom.

Serbian Slavisa Jokanovic was appointed that summer but was sacked in November after a slow start to the season and further disagreements behind the scenes.

To the surprise of some, Heckingbottom was immediately installed as his long-term successor and oversaw a run of form that saw them go from 16th to fifth by the end of the campaign.

Although they fell to a penalty shoot-out defeat by Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals they carried on where they had left off when the season restarted and won seven of their opening 10 matches.

A run of six games without a victory followed but they quickly returned to form with seven wins in eight, including a 5-2 shellacking of Burnley, either side of the World Cup break.

The Clarets pulled away from them with a run of 10 successive wins but the Blades have retained second position from 13 November, when Burnley went top, despite challenges from Luton and Middlesbrough.

    Sheffield United

Blades centre-back John Egan to Sky Sports:

"We trust ourselves in one-off games here against anyone in the league – first half it was a bit edgy but in the second half I think our experience and quality showed.

"Memories for life with this bunch of lads. This big man here [Sander Berge] is unbelievable, one of the best players to ever play in this division, we’ve got a really good squad and so buzzing to get it done.

"It feels so nice we have had to do it [win promotion] twice. It’s unbelievable – in 20 years' time we are all going to be looking back thinking about what we’ve done and it’s no mean feat, it’s a tough division to get out of.

"There’s not many places in football where you get such a tight-knit squad. Since I’ve been here it’s been like that – whoever has come in has bought in to it. We really are mates off the pitch – I that helps and it shows on the pitch. We’ll have a good craic now celebrating this!"

Sheffield United's opening goalscorer Sander Berge, speaking to Sky Sports:

"It's fantastic, we have worked so hard for this all year and now finally doing it at home in front of our own crowd is so special.

"Iliman delivered a great ball for me in front of goal with his calmness. It meant a lot to score and the second goal was just as important.

"We wanted to give back to the club and the fans - this club should be in the Premier League and now we are back to where we need to be.

"There are a lot of players good at partying, maybe even better than on the pitch - I think we will go into town probably."

Sheffield United have hit a timely jackpot. Not for the first time in the Blades' recent history has the team's on-field success masked off field financial issues.

This great squad of experienced pros – such as John Egan, Ollie Norwood, George Baldock and Billy Sharp - and highly talented youngsters, like Tommy Doyle and James McAtee, have dealt with all challenges remarkably well – not least the mid-to-late season threat to their promotion from Middlesbrough and Luton.

There’s star quality, too, from the enigmatic Iliman Ndiaye; all Blades fans will be hoping promotion wards off any suitors.

Equally they’ll hope to see that Sheffield United have learnt lessons from their previous time in the top flight to put them on a far firmer footing for many years to come.

As for West Brom, they could still go up via the play-offs but they will need an improvement on tonight in their final two games - plus a bit of help from elsewhere.
