    Sheff Utd 1-0 West Brom

Tommy Doyle just whipped in a delicious corner that no one connected with.

And then the Blades waste an absoiute golden chance to win it as John Egan sends a free header from six yards from Sander Berge's pinpoint cross. Gilt-edged.

United are flying now. I'm looking at Carlos and the bench and thinking what can he do to change this but there's not many options for him.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 66 mins

    Sheff Utd 1-0 West Brom

Bizarre booking for Jack Lester, one of the Blades' coaching staff, after his remonstrations over a challenge on George Baldock were too vociferous for the referee's liking.

The stadium is a totally different place now after that goal. The tension has evaporated.

You suspect Sheffield United will get more chances - Albion will have to take risks now. Defeat here will severely damage their play-off bid.

I'm trying to take in this atmosphere. The smoke and the noise. It's brilliant.

  6. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 61 mins

    Sheff Utd 1-0 West Brom

Oli McBurnie is wide-eyed in disbelief as he's nudged over at the back post by Darnell Furlong and goes flying into the net but referee Dean Whitestone is unmoved.

If you're a Sheffield United fan, Furlong's contact has denied him a nod-in header from Sander Berge's cross.

If you're a Baggies follower, Furlong has just eased the striker out. But with that one plus the challenge on James McAtee, United have been unlucky not to have a penalty this half.

    LIFT OFF!

I said there was a goal coming!

How apt that it was created by Iliman Ndiaye and scored by Sander Berge.

Probably the team's two outstanding individuals, both were linked with January moves away but the Blades stood firm and they've reaped the benefits.

What was Ndiaye going to do in a massive moment? Lifts his head and picks out Sander Berge. Superb composure.

Is that the moment that sends Sheffield United up?

Taylor Gardner-Hickman's no-look backpass is punished as Iliman Ndiaye latches on to it, leaves Semi Ajayi on his backside and squares for Sander Berge to slot into an empty net from 12 yards.

Sheffield United have had one goalless draw all season and last drew 0-0 here in February of 2022.

I wouldn't want to predict which way, but you feel like there's a goal in this...

That's got the grit between the teeth of the Blades players though - amazing what a bit of perceived injustice can do.

George Baldock unleashes his second shot of the second period but this is wilder than the first, soaring well over from 20 yards.

There's a touch on the hip and he's waited for the contact. It's not as clear as the appeal in the first half.

You've seen them given, as the saying goes.

James McAtee knows what he's doing in drawing a challenge from Jed Wallace. The ball is going out of play but there's definite contact too.

After the mistake in not giving Albion a penalty first half, it's probably going to take something blatant for the hosts to get one.

It's the sort of game a mistake could decide and Conor Townsend does his best to oblige.

Terrible misplaced pass gifts the ball to George Baldock and his strike from the corner of the box is clawed away by Baggies keeper Alex Palmer for a corner.

The script is written for Billy Sharp to come off the bench and send Sheffield United up, isn't it?

No changes from either side yet, though.

Right then, second half, what have you got in store for us?

A Blades winner to seal promotion or a Baggies winner to boost their play-off hopes?

So far, so not especially good for the home side and they headed down the tunnel to a mixed reception.

The Blades have been second best for large parts of that first half and, but for wasteful finishing and a missed penalty call, could and perhaps should be a goal down.

West Brom have looked more energetic and more creative than the second-placed hosts.

A draw tonight would still leave the Blades firmly in the driving seat for automatic promotion of course but this packed Bramall Lane crowd want to see the job done tonight.

It's a bit of a chess match. United have worked hard for very few chances and Albion have gone through easily for some decent opportunities.

  20. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 26 April 2023

    Sheff Utd 0-0 West Brom

Dean Whitestone's whistle goes and it's goalless at the break at Bramall Lane.

You can tell how much is on the line for both sides because it's been an incredibly nervy first half from pretty much every player on the pitch.

West Brom have created the better chances of the few on show with Karlan Grant heading a great opportunity over and Jed Wallace testing Wes Foderingham.

They also should have had a penalty for Max Lowe's trip on Brandon Thomas-Asante that was adjudged to have been outside the area but was actually inside.
