Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Arsenal will eat the clock down. They will try and silence or frustrate this Newcastle crowd.

Slow the game down to their own pace. They have every right to do that.

You have to treasure games like this. You see an awful lot of average matches during a football season, but this is one you can't take your eyes off.

My fingers are already throbbing from hammering the keyboard. That's the sign of a classic in the making.

Two big saves from Nick Pope!

Martin Odegaard releases Gabriel Martinelli, who draws a stop from the boot of the Newcastle keeper.

Odegaard follows up and fires an angled effort that Pope has to tip wide.

The Gunners skipper is an absolute joy to watch. He's right bang in the middle of everything good Arsenal are doing.

Andrew: Martin Odegaard is so good he can score from 30 yards while nutmegging two players in the process.

John: Odegaard with a cheeky 35-yard nutmeg into the bottom corner. Pure filth.

    Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal had a lot of defending to do at Man City in the game between the two recently. Way more than they've had to in most games this season. I think this is going to be another that leans heavily on that Gunners back line.

Talk about leading from the front. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was the inspirational captain with two goals against Chelsea in midweek and now he is at it again here with a superb strike.

It was against the run of the early play but Arsenal will take that all day long. What a start. What an atmosphere.

Newcastle are back in the groove. Kieran Trippier sees a cross deflect behind and then whips in the resulting corner. It drops near the penalty spot before being smashed away by Gabriel.

Matty: What a hit. Odegaard the captain standing up when we need him most.

    Daniel: Odegaaaaaard!

Mikey: That is a very sweet strike by the Gunners captain.

Remember these two playing out a mad 4-4 draw here in 2010-11. This has the feel of being just as bonkers.

Jacob Murphy is found in space in the Arsenal box but has the ball whipped off his toe by a Gunners defender.

  10. 'Big moment in title race'published at 16:46 British Summer Time 7 May 2023

    Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville on Sky Sports: "Well that's the best way to silence a crowd. Those Arsenal players needed that, they had a really tough start to this game. But Odegaard's class!

"It's a big moment in this game and a big moment in this title race."

That's stunned the home fans here. They'd seen their side take the game to the Gunners, but now they trail.

You can sure hear the Arsenal fans now, though.

  12. 'Beautiful strike'published at 16:45 British Summer Time 7 May 2023

What a beautiful strike from Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal haven’t even been in the game.

    Oh, what a goal!

Martin Odegaard is simply weaving gold with everything he does at the moment. He is found infield and takes a touch, looks up and fires a low shot through a couple of pairs of legs and inside the corner of the Newcastle net.

They've been battered for 12 minutes, but as we all know by now this is a serious Arsenal side. They're not letting this title go easily.

    Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

    Stephen Warnock

It’s come off the thigh then onto the arm, it’s definitely not a penalty.

I don’t know why the Newcastle fans are so irate.

Yep. The decision is overturned. The home fans do not like it, but it is the correct decision.

Arsenal survive, but they're going to have to do something to stem the tide.

    Now then!

Chris Kavanagh has been asked to come to the screen. And with good reason.

It looks like the shot may have hit Kiwior's thigh first before then hitting the arm. I think this is getting ruled out.

  18. 'Arsenal like rabbits in the headlights'published at 16:39 British Summer Time 7 May 2023

    Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Arsenal look like rabbits in the headlights. They can’t get out, they can’t find passes.

That’s credit to Newcastle and the start they have made.

  19. PENALTY TO NEWCASTLEpublished at 7 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

The corner is taken short and worked to Bruno Guimaraes. His shot is blocked, but by the arm of Jakub Kiwior.

The whistle goes and Chris Kavanagh points to the spot. Cheers here, and in the blue parts of Manchester.

VAR will, of course, take a look...

    Arsenal really are rattled.

Gabriel Jesus is caught on the ball and concedes a corner.
