Dwight McNeil does very, very well to deny Julian Alvarez. The City forward runs onto a long ball and Everton winger McNeil is the last man back for some reason. He has to stop Alvarez and does.

City work a corner back to Phil Foden on the edge of the box but the England midfielder's shot is blocked. Now Julian Alvarez's cross goes past everyone. Manuel Akanji lets it go but there's nobody else behind him to attack it.

Good defending by Yerry Mina to stop Erling Haaland turning and running. He's winning that duel so far.

That goal has really settled Brentford into their groove and they are passing the ball around slickly at the moment.

Ilkay Gundogan surges onto a Phil Foden pass and Yerry Mina and Nathan Patterson just manage to put him off together.

The resulting corner finds its way back to Riyad Mahrez, who shoots over from 25 yards.

About 20 minutes in, I think both managers will be pleased with their start. Manchester City have had the majority of possession inside Everton's half and they know they just have to keep patient with their play, keep stretching the opposition, because, with the quality of their players, an opportunity or two will or present themselves.

Everton will be pleased because that opportunity hasn't really looked like happening yet and they have been a threat on the counter-attack at the other end.

So far, so good for the confection-made-by-caramelizing-sugar-or-molasses-(creating-inverted-sugar)-along-with-butter-and-occasionally-flours.

A draw would take them two points above the relegation zone in a game they couldn't really expect much out of.
