Newcastle fan here - we expect to go out in the CL Group Stages - if we are lucky we go into the Europa if now we will enjoy it as we go - we don't have the squad the do it yet but we will love the games.

    Mike

I assume you think Man U will go out in the group stage too as Newcastle played them off the park? City to have a hard time too given they salvaged a late draw at St James? Sour grapes much?

  4. Joelinton out for Newcastlepublished at 19:56 British Summer Time 22 May 2023
    Breaking

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 BST)

A blow to Newcastle as Joelinton has dropped out of the side during the warm-up. He was always touch and go with an injury.

Elliot Anderson comes in to the side, Harrison Ashby is on the bench.

    Newcastle v Leicester (20:00 BST)

Newcastle are vying to complete their first Premier League double against Leicester since the 1994-95 season.

The Foxes have lost three of their past four top-flight games versus the Magpies, more defeats than in the previous 10 meetings (W8, L2).

Newcastle beat Leicester 2-0 at St James' Park on 10 January in the quarter-finals of this season's EFL Cup.

  6. 'A big call by Smith'published at 19:52 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

The only talking point amongst the Leicester fans high up in the away stand is the fact Maddison and Barnes have been dropped. The two players were out on the pitch having a long chat just before the team news was released. It’s a big call by Dean Smith but Barnes in particular hasn’t looked himself in recent games. Leicester have to hope Kelechi Iheanacho is fit enough to make an impact. At one stage his injury had looked season ending.

Must say, those omissions scream "they've already clocked out for summer". Wouldn't be surprised if both think they're too good for championship and have moves already lined up. Dean Smith needs fighters, not those whose head will drop and shoulders shrug...so, understandable changes.

    Pete

Dean Smith on why he's dropped two of his best players: "The last few games we've tried to win, today we have to be hard to beat". Tell me you're going to park the bus without telling me you're going to park the bus. Best not hope for a thriller today then!

    Dave

I think Dean Smith might be trying to fire up Maddison and Barnes by leaving them out. Hold out if they can with a back 5, bring them on to win it... Risky...

    Ben

Any chance of a 7-0 home win? This could come down to goal difference.

Newcastle full-back Kieran Trippier has been named as Newcastle's player of the year.

The England international follows distinguished names such as Kevin Keegan, Gazza, Andy Cole and Alan Shearer to win the award.

All three of Dean Smith's Premier League away matches against Newcastle have ended 1-1, twice with Aston Villa and once with Norwich City.

Would Leicester fans take that today?

I will say this now. Newcastle will go out of next season's champions league at the group stage.

    Alan

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have the potential to be as good as the greats: Keegan, Shearer and Beardsley. A joy to watch. They deserve to be in Europe next season.

"A new dawn," is the message emblazoned outside one of the pubs in Newcastle city centre.

It certainly will be if the football club claim one point tonight to seal a top four place and a spot in next season's Champions League.

If they complete the feat, it will be 20 years since they last played in Europe's elite club competition under the legendary Sir Bobby Robson.

And what a brilliant job Eddie Howe has done in such a short space of time, taking over a side 19th in the table and staring at relegation, to one on the cusp of returning to the big time in the space of 18 months.

They'll be popping the champagne if they avoid defeat but I wonder if the Leicester fans managed to get a drink before the game...

Eddie Howe says Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is "performing at the best level I've seen him at".

Howe signed Wilson from Coventry in 2014 when he was in charge of Bournemouth and the pair spent six years there together.

Wilson has scored 18 goals this season, including eight in his past six appearances.

It is the most by a Newcastle player in a season since Alan Shearer scored 22 in 2003-04.

"The season he was in the Championship with us, my first season with him at Bournemouth, I thought he was electric," said Howe.

"But this is at the very highest level, this is against the best defenders in the world and the best teams in the world.

"I complimented him [after the Brighton game], not in terms of the goal he scored, but just his intelligence on the press for us. His tactical understanding was as good as I’ve seen."

Leicester have got to go for everything, don’t get me wrong, but going to St James’ Park when Newcastle just need a point to reach the Champions League - I’d be in shock if they come out with anything from that.

That last game against West Ham, I’d imagine there will be some changes and maybe a different vibe to that West Ham team as well. That’s their chance to get anything.

Former Leicester City goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer said the club started to slide "quite some time ago" but he has been surprised by the speed at which the Foxes have spiralled.

Schwarzer believes things started to go wrong when former boss Brendan Rodgers said 'big changes' needed to be made to his squad this summer.

"I didn’t see the fall as quickly as it has been and I’m still scratching my head about it," he told BBC World Service Radio.

"I still look at that squad of players and I still find it difficult to believe that they are where they are.

"What has gone so terribly wrong? Why are they there? I think they were possibly a little bit too slow to react in changing things sooner.

"There’s been a lot of decisions I think that have been made that have really backfired."

Ex-West Ham midfielder Reo-Coker told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast the pressure is "all on Leicester" tonight.

"There's no pressure on Newcastle whatsoever," said Reo-Coker.

"Being in those situations before when you're having such a great season as a player, it's a lot of outside noise.

"It takes a good manager who knows exactly what he's doing, how to hold the dressing room and keep them focused in the right direction.

"Eddie Howe deserves a lot of credit for that. It's a tremendous achievement."

    Leicester City

Leicester defender Jonny Evans speaking to Sky Sports: "A win tonight still keeps it in our hands so it's a good position to be in.

"We know it can still go down to the last game of the season but a win keeps it in our hands which would be the ideal position to be in.

"Newcastle are in form so it's a big game. You can see they come out quickly. The first 15 minutes will be really important.

"Managing the game is something we need to do well tonight. We'll give it a go."

  20. Longstaff’s return is timelypublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 22 May 2023

Understandably, James Maddison and Harvey Barnes being left out from the start for Leicester is dominating the pre-match discourse.

But for Newcastle, Sean Longstaff coming back in is big and welcome news.

There was talk of a midfield injury crisis after Thursday’s win over Brighton, with Joe Willock definitely out and doubts over Joelinton. Eddie Howe has kept his cards close to his chest regarding Longstaff since his injury at Everton.

He’s been badly missed in the ensuing games, and he’ll make the home side much more solid through the middle on this monumental occasion.
