It's 13 years since Aston Villa had a taste of European football. A bitter taste as it turned out as they lost to Rapid Vienna in the Europa League qualifiers.

They can get back in today, a place in the Europa Conference League awaits if they beat Brighton...who have already secured their Euro tour of course.

I think without doubt Everton are better with Calvert-Lewin. It's up to someone to step up.

These are occasions where you have a chance to be a hero. There will be players who will thrive under that kind of pressure and step up, and hopefully we see that today.

  3. 'Scoring is Everton's problem'published at 16:23 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Everton v Bournemouth (16:30 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Statman Dave on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Dwight McNeill is their top scorer with seven goals. As it stands it is the lowest Everton to scorer since the 2001-02 campaign with Duncan Ferguson so there is issues there. You are looking at Iwobi and McNeill, they've shown reasonable form in the last few games."

  4. 'Too good to go down attitude'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

Leicester v West Ham (16:30 BST)

    BBC World Service

Former Leicester City defender Robert Huth spoke to BBC World Service Radio about why they are in a relegation position.

"I do think there is a being ‘too good to go down' sort of attitude. We’ve seen and heard it before," said Huth.

"Teams think they’ve got the possibility of getting themselves out of it but never quite manage to switch the switch."

It is seven years since Huth was part of the Leicester squad that won the Premier League.

"The second you take your eye off the ball, the competition improves," he added.

"That seems to the be case for us. It’s not just Leicester City, all the other teams have similar issues, they all fight their own battles.

"If it was to happen and we were to go down, we have to reassess, we have to regroup. We just have to deal with it and get on with it."

  5. 'It's win at all costs'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Everton v Bournemouth (16:30 BST)

    Mike Richards, Unholy Trinity:, external

I've started writing this piece countless times before eventually accepting the words that truly express our feelings.

Overwhelming anxiety and apprehension are the only ways to describe our current psychological state.

Asking fellow Evertonians what the club means to them, feelings range from unrelenting affection to relentless misery.

The love for our club is what makes the misery of our plight now so heightened.

The golden years of the 1980s were, quite simply, the pinnacle of our club's existence.

Since those glittering days there has been a fairly steady decline, including numerous flirtations with relegation. That decline has rapidly accelerated over the past two seasons - our current boardroom custodians responsible for what can only be described as complete mismanagement.

Relegation battles are becoming a habit. You can only go so long before the inevitable happens. The ramifications would be vast and, without meaning to sound arrogant, outweigh the impact on both Leeds United and Leicester City.

It was said this week that if Everton go down, it would be the biggest relegation of the Premier League era. It's hard to disagree.

Players and staff know by now what this club means to us. They know what we have done for them over the past two seasons as well.

We are loyal, proud and have constantly shown we have the stomach for the fight.

We will be here, whatever the weather, whoever is wearing the shirt and whoever is sitting in the dugout. However, it is time to cash in some of our adoration. We need some payback.

Quite simply, it's do or die. It's fight or flight. It's win at all costs.

    FIGHT. FOR. US.

  6. 'Victory may not be enough to save Leicester'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

Leicester v West Ham (16:30 BST)

Leicester gambled that they could draw at Newcastle, win this game and stay up. I think the first two parts will go according to plan, but sadly the last bit is out of their hands and victory here might not be enough to save them.

West Ham may rotate a few players with the Europa Conference League final in mind, but their away form has been poor anyway. They went from the end of August to the start of April without managing a single league success on the road.

    Prediction: 2-1

  7. 'I've been on stag dos longer than Allardyce has been at Leeds!'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Leeds v Tottenham (16:30 BST)

    Martin Keown
Former England defender on Football Focus

It was quite telling, he was being very honest, maybe too honest [on Sam Allardyce's reaction after Leeds lost to West Ham last weekend]. He's tried every trick in the book and then told us what the trick was almost.

It will be interesting. Maybe it comes good for him and it's a miracle

I do think he should have been in the job a little bit earlier. Four games is not enough but it was about changing the mod for him. I mean I've been on longer stag dos than he's been the manager of that football club! So he's lifted the mood but maybe there is a miracle at the end of it that we can't see but I don't see Leeds doing it.

I wish them well but Leeds are really relying on other people and you can't afford to do that on the last day of the season.

Last season Brighton finished ninth under Graham Potter and they were fourth in September when he left, heading for a failed spell at Chelsea, with former Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk manager Roberto de Zerbi coming in.

Two points in five matches was a bad start, but what a job the Italian has done since.

They lost midfielder Leandro Trossard to Arsenal in January, yet still have managed to finish a club-best sixth and are looking forward to their first ever European campaign, with Europa League football guaranteed.

With a wonderfully-attacking possession-based style, they have beaten Chelsea home and away, also defeated Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal and were only a penalty shootout away from reaching the FA Cup final. Only Manchester City and Arsenal have scored more times in the Premier League this season.

But now the Brighton players are massively in demand. Six of the side that started Thursday's 1-1 draw with champions City were aged 22 or under.

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, a World Cup winner with Argentina in December, is wanted by Liverpool with Moises Caicedo repeatedly linked with a move to Arsenal after the Seagulls fended off a bid in January.

With Pervis Estupinan, Julio Enciso, Kaoru Mitoma, Lewis Dunk and Evan Ferguson among those also hugely impressing, De Zerbi and Brighton are going to face a tough battle this summer trying to keep hold of their star names.

  9. A record-equalling season for De Gea?published at 16:20 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Gary Rose
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Judging by his warm up saves, David de Gea is determined to equal his best-ever clean sheets record in a Premier League season.

The Manchester United goalkeeper, who is assured of the Golden Glove award for the most shutouts, is currently on 17 and an 18th today will equal his total for the 2017-18 season.

Despite that, his future as United's number one is uncertain, with talks ongoing over a new contract.

Huge roars go up around Goodison Park as Everton's players finish their warm-up. Going to be some atmosphere in here today and the good thing for Everton is that their task is clear. Win and they stay up - easier said that done given some of their performances at home this season.

"THIS IS IT," writes Aston Villa boss Unai Emery in full caps in the matchday programme.

He goes on to say: "This is what we have been playing for, what we have been building towards, what we have been working towards and what we have been dreaming of this season.

"Two months ago we spoke about whether we could get to the last match against Brighton at home playing for something important. Now it is in our hands. We have enjoyed a lot in this amazing stadium and we must do it one more time.

"This season, in any case, is unforgettable. It has been an amazing trip with a great and talented group of players, our hardworking staff and the passionate and committed owners.

"All of them deserve the credit of, no matter what happens today, a successful season that will hopefully become the first step of a long way of achievements. Aston Villa just started to fight for the positions that our fanbase and our history are a long time deserving."

A win gets them back into Europe, but they could still do so with a draw or even a loss - as long as they match Tottenham and Brentford's results away at Leeds and at home to Manchester City respectively.

  12. Who else is there for Spurs after Slot rules himself out of managerial race?published at 16:18 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Well placed sources have suggested Tottenham retain an interest in former Spain and Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, who is without a job since standing down after the World Cup.

    But there are other options.

Another former Spain coach, Julen Lopetegui, is in an uncertain situation at Wolves after discovering Financial Fair Play restrictions will be a major impediment to his summer squad building plans.

Like Arne Slot, former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has done an impressive job in the Netherlands. The 46-year-old is now on the market after leaving PSV Eindhoven over a failure to agree a forward path.

Graham Potter built his reputation at Brighton and is still highly regarded despite lasting a matter of months at Chelsea amid an admittedly chaotic owner-inspired recruitment campaign.

At one point, Brendan Rodgers was linked strongly with Tottenham. He didn't seem to be enjoying himself at Leicester long before his dismissal and does have the FA Cup on his CV from his time at the King Power.

Celtic's Ange Postecoglou has won back-to-back Scottish titles and is on the brink of a domestic treble. Given his progressive tactical approach he must also come into consideration.

  13. Mason came to 'lay foundations for what we expect in the future'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Leeds v Tottenham (16:30 BST)

Tottenham boss Ryan Mason stressed the importance of having an identity at the club ahead of the final game of the Premier League season.

Spurs travel to Elland Road on Sunday in the knowledge Leeds need to beat them to stand any chance of staying up.

Mason's side will need to better Aston Villa's result to secure a place in the Europa Conference League next season.

On his role at the club Mason said: "One of my main things with my team of people was to try and create a togetherness, to make us feel part of something and to lay foundations for what we want and expect a team to look and play like in the future."

Speculation continues around the future of England and Spurs captain Harry Kane who has been linked with a move away from the North London club this summer.

Asked to sum up Kane's time at the club Mason added: "Can't sum up his time as he's still our player. Sum it up when it’s a closed chapter and speak about the past. Certainly not the case.

"For any player, manager, when one leaves, it's important to have a succession plan in place. When people leave the next one comes in and the impact is not so big. Not just Harry but others.

"Ultimately in 10-20 years Tottenham Hotspur will still be the club. Players and staff come in and out but for me it’s really important to have identity and real idea in all departments."

    • Leeds have won just one of their past 10 Premier League games against Spurs (D1 L8), a 3-1 home win in May 2021.
    • Tottenham have won two of their past three Premier League away games against Leeds, as many as they had in their previous 15 top-flight visits to Elland Road (D6 L7). They've not won consecutive away league games against the Whites since October 1979.
    • Leeds have lost their final league match in just one of the past 10 seasons, winning each of the past three in a row. As a top-flight side, Leeds have lost their final league match in just one of their past 15 campaigns (W7 D7), going down 1-0 at Chelsea in their 2003-04 relegation campaign.
    • Spurs striker Harry Kane has scored on the final day of the season in each of the past five Premier League campaigns. Overall, he's scored nine goals on the closing day, with no player netting more in the competition's history.

They have just played Simple Minds’ ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ at Elland Road.

Leeds fans will be hoping that applies to the Premier League if they get relegated today.

The last time they went down, in 2004, it was 16 years before they came back.

The time before that, in 1982, it was eight.

Twice in their history the club has been relegated from the top flight and bounced straight back the following season, in 1928 and 1932.

  16. Sutton's predictionpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Leeds v Tottenham (16:30 BST)

For the last round of Premier League games, Chris Sutton takes on Bryan Devendorf, drummer with rock band The National.

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

Leeds United boss Sam Allardyce has been driven to despair by how bad his side are at the back and he's only been in charge for three games.

That's why I can't see Leeds winning this game - and I think they are getting relegated.

Tottenham don't deserve many plaudits either, though. They have played well so rarely this season that I don't see them getting a win that would give them a chance of seventh place and European football next season.

Devendorf's prediction: Bryce [Dessner, Aaron's brother] supports Leeds because he likes their American connection. But my son supports Spurs so I've been, very casually, following their results for a while through him. Tottenham have been like a Cadillac on cruise control this season, with a string of disappointments. Leeds are so scrappy and ready for a fight, but I just don't know if they can see this game through. Instead, I think it is going to be one of those days where they put in a lot of effort before there is a kind of heartbreaking Harry Kane header that sends them down. 0-1

Leicester v West Ham (16:30 BST)

    Matt Piper
Former Foxes winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The mismanagement at every level has been criminal and why we find ourselves in the position we are in.

I think it's a mix of Brendan and the way he was talking at the start of the season. I've loved Brendan and the way he built clubs up and conducted himself in the media and then all of a sudden he started launching players under the bus and then putting them in the team the next week and not getting a performance out of them.

From what Brendan was saying you could see he was trying to get a bounce out of them but I'm sure you have to do that behind closed doors.

  18. 'It will be bleak for Leicester if they go down'published at 16:13 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

Leicester v West Ham (16:30 BST)

    Matt Piper
Former Leicester winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Clearly them eight players [out of contract] will be gone. They will have to sell at least five I think.

Maddison and Barnes would definitely be in that, I think Ndidi would be in that list and then you're looking at someone like Vardy . Even if he's got a relegation clause in his contract he's not going to drop from £120k to £40k [a week]. It's going to be an interesting to see the story with Vardy.

I agree it's going to be really bleak over the next couple of months if we do go down and they're going to have to have some wonderful recruitment.

Sunderland dropped all the way through and I'm just praying that doesn't happen to Leicester.
