  1. 'Richarlison knows it was just banter' - Antoniopublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Leeds v Tottenham (16:30 BST)

West Ham striker Michail Antonio says his Tottenham counterpart Richarlison knows comments he made on the Footballer's Football Podcast last week are "banter".

Antonio and co-host Callum Wilson of Newcastle United pointed out Richarlison's goal celebration of taking his shirt off had happened four times this season , external- with three of them subsequently ruled out for offside.

Spurs boss Ryan Mason said he "doesn't really like that type of thing" as he reflected on those comments.

"Mason was a player - we are players," responded Antonio. "Players have banter with players. We have not said Richarlison is not a good footballer or anything about his stats.

"He doesn't actually care. If he cared, he would not be the quality of player he is - because you can't let people get into your heads.

"If he saw the comments, he would not have thought we were taking the mick out of him. He will know it's banter.

"It was unnecessary for Mason to take it personally."

Antonio even commended Richarlison for his passionate celebrations.

"I rate the fact he does that every time," he said. "I've stopped celebrating because I don't want to be when VAR rules it out, so I think he's mentally stronger than me.

"I'm worried everyone will still be playing and I'll look like a doughnut doing the worm in the far corner."

    Leeds v Tottenham (16:30 BST)

    Harry KaneImage source, Getty Images

Harry Kane "has got all the power" when it comes to his future and he may run his Tottenham contract down to open up more opportunities for himself next summer, says former Premier League midfielder Don Hutchison.

The striker was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City in the summer of 2021, but ended up staying after Spurs chairman Daniel Levy refused to enter into negotiations.

The 30-year-old England captain now has one year left on his Tottenham contract and is reportedly a top summer target for Manchester United.

However, Hutchison is unsure Kane would make the move to Old Trafford - even if Levy agreed to sell.

"Tottenham and Daniel Levy don't hold all the cards - Harry Kane holds all the cards in this scenario," the former Scotland international told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"If Levy says 'we need to cash in and sell you to Manchester United for £60m' but he says 'no thanks, I don’t want to go', he'll run his contract down.

"Kane has got all the power. He can choose if this is the summer that he leaves.

"He can go on a free next year - and if Kane stays for one more year, it opens up the possibility of Real Madrid, of Bayern Munich, of Barcelona, Liverpool, whoever.

"This summer, it feels like the only club that can come in is Manchester United - so he's got one club to choose from. Or he can wait 12 months and have four or five."

Not that my prediction skills are up much to write home about, but I'm going for an early goal somewhere to upset the odds - maybe Bournemouth or Leeds taking the lead - and then it all ironing itself out predictably over the remainder of the afternoon.

Everton win, Leicester and Leeds go down.

Leicester v West Ham (16:30 BST)

    Matt Piper
Former Leicester winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

We really needed to win [at Newcastle] because now it's not in our hands. I think Leicester will win today, I really do, but I think Everton will win too.

I think the players grew a lot in belief against Newcastle. I felt they looked confident and pleased with their night's work.

Clearly, West Ham have got this big Conference League final coming up. I think we will get the job done and then pray my old mate from the England Under-21s, Gary O'Neil can get us something [at Everton].

Leicester boss Dean Smith: "It's a game of football and I'm doing a job I love doing. Our job is quite simple - we've got to win the game and hope other things go for us.

"We've had to pick horses for courses. At Newcastle we knew they'd be like a juggernaut so we set up not to lose. Our home games have always been the one with the fans behind us. We need to be more aggressive but our Achilles heel has been conceding goals.

"It's important we do our job and have no regrets."

    Ashley YoungImage source, BBC Sport

Could today be a Premier League farewell for Aston Villa's Ashley Young?

The 37-year-old is out of contract in the summer and currently sits on 422 Premier League appearances - 32nd on the list of most games in the competition (and is among the substitutes at Villa Park today).

He was released by Villa last June, only to then get a one-year contract a month later and boss Unai Emery has recently praised not only his on-field contribution but also his leadership skills on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Young's bargaining hand would have been strengthened earlier this week with the news that fellow full-back Alex Moreno will miss pre-season and maybe the start of the next Premier League campaign after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury on Tuesday.

Young turns 38 in July but the player, capped 39 times by England and a title winner with Manchester United and Inter Milan, has been a regular this season, featuring in 32 matches in all competitions.

He played for Villa in their last European game, way back in August 2010 when a 3-2 home loss to Rapid Vienna saw them exit the Europa League at the play-off stage.

Will he still be in Villa colours if they are back playing in Europe in August?

  9. The cost of relegation - part 2published at 15:44 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

Dr Dan Plumley, principle lecturer in sport finance at Sheffield Hallam:

The other issues following relegation surround ownership and exposure. Reductions in revenue coupled with high costs and the pressure to bounce straight back put further emphasis on the owners to dip into their own pocket. Each club has a unique ownership situation at present. Leicester’s owners recently wrote off a significant amount of debt which will improve the club’s balance sheet position in the future. Leeds appear set for new owners at some point as potentially do Everton, although the latter story has certainly had a few twists and turns in recent months. There is of course a new stadium to consider with Everton as well. Any investors coming in are likely to be playing a waiting game with such financial jeopardy attached to the situation.

The other big miss comes from wider exposure. The Premier League themselves in 2019 stated that Premier League is shown in 191 out of 193 countries recognised by the United Nations. That equates to a lot of eyes on screen, on the club and indeed the city/region. It is impossible to attach an actual figure on what this aspect is worth, but the reach is phenomenal. This, coupled with the financial blow, is why many Premier League clubs cite relegation and divisional status as their principal risk in their annual accounts and it is also why if they do drop out of the league, they are desperate to return at the earliest possible opportunity.

  10. The cost of relegation - part 1published at 15:42 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

Dr Dan Plumley, principle lecturer in sport finance at Sheffield Hallam:

Relegation hits hard on the finances of a club. It wipes £60m off the revenue line overnight. This is the difference between the guaranteed Premier League television payment per season and the first year of parachute payments following relegation. The most recent available revenue figures in 2022 stood at £181.0m (Everton), £189.2m (Leeds United) and £214.6m (Leicester City). Relegation would put a significant dint in that figure. The most recent of the three to have been in the Championship (Leeds) earned £54.2m in that year (2020) highlighting the enormity of the revenue gap between the leagues.

With the reduction in revenue also comes the need to attempt to balance the cost side of the equation. All three clubs have made after tax losses for the last four years. The pandemic accounts for some of that, but even in a normal year, the scales don’t often balance for many clubs outside of the established elite. In the last two seasons, both Leicester’s and Everton’s wages to revenue ratio has been between 85-95%. Leeds is slightly more modest (64%) but the wage pressure would still be huge for all three clubs should the worst happen and one would hope that wage reduction clauses linked to relegation are already accounted for in player contracts. If not, it is likely we would see some sales of the biggest assets and biggest earners.

  11. 'Bournemouth will make things difficult'published at 15:41 British Summer Time 28 May 2023

    Everton v Bournemouth (16:30 BST)

I actually feel like this is an awkward game for Everton. Their fate is in their own hands and I think they will stay up, but Bournemouth will make things difficult for them.

Everton will play with great intensity but they have a worry over whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be fit enough to lead their attack, and they have not been free-scoring anyway.

In contrast, Bournemouth's position means they can play with more freedom and that makes them dangerous.

Goodison Park will be a very tense place in the final few minutes if this game is as close as I think it will be, because I expect results elsewhere to mean that Everton have to win to stay up.

    Prediction: 1-0

Let's face it, if you have to beat a "big" team at home to stay up you would want that team to be Spurs. Reckon Leeds could still pull off a miracle today.

The last time the lion will appear on a Southampton programme (for a season, at least).

Neither set of fans will enjoy wild celebrations here today, despite the glorious sunshine.

It’s more a case of what could have been and some pensive thoughts about how they must do better next season.

For Southampton, a tough campaign in the Championship with possibly a new manager awaits.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans will be watching for summer insights to see how they can get themselves back into the top four (at least).

An appreciative farewell for James Milner and Theo Walcott as they leave their clubs might be the only highlight of this affair for both fans.

Aleksandar Mitrovic returns to the scene of his red card two-and-a-half months ago looking to help Fulham secure an impressive eighth Premier League away win.

Mitrovic received an eight-match ban for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh during the 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.

The Serbia striker received a three-match ban for the sending-off, three for violent conduct and an additional two for "improper, abusive, insulting and threatening" language. He has also been fined £75,000.

Fulham have not defeated United since 2009. Is that about to change?

Manager Sam Allardyce said he was willing to take a gamble with the fitness of his players but evidently, Bamford was not even fit enough for that.
